Dr. Palada with former CPU President Dr. Juanito M. Acanto and the late Dr. Lejo Braña.
I first met Manong Lejo Braña in CPU when I joined the Board of Trustees in 2017. Although I heard about him as an outstanding CPU alumnus, I never met him personally until I served and participated in the meetings of the CPU Board of Trustees. That was the time then that I realized he is a relative of my wife Elisa Hortelano from Janiuay. Somehow the Arandela, Catedral, Acanto and Braña families are related to the Hortelano family in Janiuay. Every time we had BOT meeting, I always sat beside Manong Lejo. We always exchanged views and opinions about CPU. I learned a lot from his rich experience in engineering and his profession when he was in the USA. He always gave critical and good suggestions for CPU and I always agreed and supported his opinions.
Being the father of the packaging engineering, I greatly appreciate Manong Lejo’s contributions to CPU. I visited his packaging engineering office and laboratory in CPU and I was amazed of the facilities he donated and provided for the advancement of packaging industry.
The last time I personally met Manong Lejo was during the BOT meeting in 2019 just before the pandemic. It was nice to exchange views and opinions with him and I will never forget all his intelligent and wise advice and contribution to CPU. Although, I will not see him and be present during the memorial service, I owe him a deep appreciation and tribute for what he had accomplished for CPU as well as the many students and stakeholders who benefited from packaging engineering technology.

CPU was chosen as one of the venues for the week-long celebration because of its significant role in GSP Iloilo history. In 1939, the American women missionaries established the first troop in CPU, making it the second oldest in the country. It was called the Rose Troop in honor of Gertrude Rose who is one of the organizers. She is the wife of Dr. Francis Rose who was President of Central Philippine College during that time.
On January 5, the releasing of tilapia fingerlings and the forming of the long green line was held at the Iloilo River Esplanade which was followed by a Poster Making Contest at the Iloilo Girl Scout Social Hall. The next day, the GSP-Iloilo Council conducted a do-day at Camp Pasica, a 13- hectare Girl Scout camp in Dingle, Iloilo.
The week-long festivities came to a close with a Gala Night and Benefit Dinner on January 7 at the Diversion 21 Hotel.

Dr. Lejo C. Braña is a long-time member of the CPU Board of Trustees.
In the morning of August 30, 2021, at around 8:00 in the morning, CPU Board of Trustees Member, Dr. Lejo C. Braña breathed his last at the Iloilo Mission Hospital – due to Cardio Pulmonary Arrest.
Dr. Braña was born in Janiuay, Iloilo on February 8, 1938. He was married to the late Concordia Magno “Baby” Braña. They have one daughter, Mercury Ann Alabi who is residing in the U.S.
Central Philippine University Board of Trustees conveyed its deepest sympathies to the family. A Distinguished Centralian, and known as the Father of Philippine Packaging Engineering, Braña donated 11.5 Million worth of Packaging Equipment from the United States to his beloved Alma Mater. He set it up and helped establish the CPU School of Packaging Engineering- which is the only one in Southeast Asia and offered only in CPU College of Engineering.
“It’s time to give back to the country, to CPU and the people of Iloilo through education and livelihood promotion,” Braña said. He was honored by the Department of Science and Technology in its ‘Balik Scientist Program “for being a Filipino expert in life and applied sciences; who have made their mark abroad and chose to return home”.
On March 17, 2010, CPU President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles received the Deed of Donation document from Dr. and Mrs. Lejo C. Braña in a meaningful turn-over ceremony at CPU. It was a full-service packaging set of testing equipment. Braña’s brother, Rollin was a witness to the event which was also attended by the pioneering class of Packaging Engineering students.
In his message to students, Braña said that “Not only CPU students will benefit from the complete packaging equipment, but also the country, and even Asia as well”, pointing to the newly delivered equipment. He added that “Packaging Engineering will apply scientific and engineering principles to solve problems in the design, production and preparation of packaged products for distribution.
Braña was the first Filipino Certified Professional in Packaging; the first Filipino and Asian to receive a prestigious award in the packaging community in the United States and worldwide – of being elected to the US Packaging Hall of Fame. He is a Filipino Packaging Professional for more than 48 years and was President of G- Packaging Technology Partners, Inc. He was a Certified Member of the Institute of Packaging UK. He served as Director for Packaging for more than 28 years at Riviana Foods. He was Consultant, Director and Manager of many other companies – including S.C. Johnson, Procter and Gamble and Hunt- Wesson Foods among others.
He graduated his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology in 1957 and his Secondary and Elementary Education from Central Philippine University in 1950. He had several Committee Memberships and Chairmanships in CPU and was a Regional Representative to CPUAAI in America and Canada from 1999 to 2002. He was an adviser of CPUAAI of Houston, Texas from 1980 to 1994
Braña left a legacy of wisdom to the Packaging Engineering Department, the College of Engineering, and Central Philippine University. Engineer Bernie Cangrejo, Chairperson of the CPU Packaging Engineering Department, expressed gratitude for Dr. Braña. He said that “Dr.Braña was a very generous person and always looks on the needs and concerns of our department and the University at large”. Cangrejo is expected to oversee everything that Dr. Braña started at the CPU Packaging Institute.
“He has a real concern for the College of Engineering and the University; we meet oftentimes during BOT meetings and he would ask me, ‘How is the development of our computer system? Engr. Jeriel Militar, Chairperson of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Affiliated Renewable Energy Center (AREC) Project Leader recalls. Militar has been a Staff Representative to the Board of Trustees.
For Nica Abaldo, Administrative Officer of the BOT, “Dr.Braña was well respected by all members of the CPU Board of Trustees; he always had a lot of inputs”. “He was one of those who warmly welcomed me in 2015 when I was sponsoring an event.”
Dr. Florentino Alerta, Vice President of CPU Alumni Association and a Health Officer of Iloilo Mission Hospital commented on Dr. Braña as an “Epitome of a true Christian in action.”

Mr. Bejay P. Songcog with his masterpiece.
Mr. Bejay P. Songcog, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Batch 2020, was the Grand Winner among more than a hundred participants during the ART SURGE 2021 International Online Painting Competition held on August 28, 2021.
Having created an artwork with a medium of acrylic paint on stretched canvas with a size of 17.5in x 22.5in, Mr. Songcog shared that “the process of creating such a masterpiece wasn’t that hard to conceptualize but the time and resources is the challenge due to limited working time to finish my artwork in submitting it on the said deadline.”
While the world continues to deal with the pandemic, Mr. Songcog believes that the best way to move forward is to get inspired and be creative. Thus, the said competition has given him an opportunity to practice and showcase his God-given talent to inspire and motivate other young artists around the globe.
Mr. Songcog is grateful to have won the competition. He shared a simple reminder from Twitter, “Artists are not like athletes we cannot win gold. We cannot beat other creatives. We cannot first. Sport is objective. Our craft is subjective. Creating to be the best is a waste of energy. Instead, create to connect to the people who need you. Because they’re out there. Creat in your way, because there is no right way. Take the pressure off, and focus on your unique brand of magic.”
The Centralian artist would like to “thank God for this another achievement and blessing, my ever-supportive and proud parents, and friends who never get tired and believe in my capability. The Central Echo staff, EIC Kathleen Celestine Frugalidad, Mab Ban (the model) Onesiforo Berina Jr., Jared Songcog, Jirah Songcog, Beverly Egay, teachers and friends, Jessa Mae Pacto Solis, Jorgeth Dalofin Rien Mesias, my supportive bffs, thanks a lot.” He also acknowledges the ART SURGE 2021 team, Artsea Lab, Artdialogo Asia and FSMMI for the opportunity given to artists like him to showcase and share their talent.
ART SURGE International Youth Day Conference is a platform for creatives to connect and/or reconnect in the new normal and highlight the value of creativity and talents to weave inspiring stories and perspectives that can reshape and impact the world today. ArtSEA and Artdialogo Asia and their program supporters; the National Youth Council Singapore, ASEAN Youth Forum, Rotary Club of Bandar Utama, K Biz, Paragon International University, Friends of Saint Mary MacKillop Inc., in the Wild, World Youth Alliance, 23 Sampaguita Creative Space, and IPeace (Indigenous Peoples Education for Art, Culture and Empowerment) collaborate to highlight creative leadership and youth development through an artistic and creative lens.

CPU students at the Centennial Walkway , a favorite place in the campus to spend leisure time.
After more than two weeks of holiday, Central Philippine University resumed classes last January 6, 2020, allowing the students and the faculty and staff to relax a little, unwind and spend their vacation with their loved ones.
According to Cedie Dunlao, a Senior High School student, she did not spend her school break productively because she watches movies all the time but as a student with big dreams, Cedie will not allow laziness to consume her and stop her from being productive. She also added that she is excited to meet again her “barkada” and share different Christmas vacation experiences.
“The back-to-school feeling never fails me to pervade all over my body knowing that I was not able to spend my school break productively since my eyes were glued to movie-binge watching. But as a student with big dreams, I will not let laziness drown my whole being and stop me from doing the things that will make me productive so I have to jump out of my bed every day even if I don’t really want to and plant the seeds so that someday, I will be able to reap the fruit of my labor. The feeling of excitement comes from finally meeting your barkadas again and exchange endless talks about vacation,” Dunlao said.
Artine Bilbao, also a Senior High School student, added that some students were still hungover because of the holiday and she felt a bit weird that she has to be back doing routines and continue their lessons and discussions. Bilbao also said that because of the incoming midterm examination, both students and teachers are loaded and busy but she continues to stay positive and consider 2020 as a fresh start. For her, she wanted to extend the holidays but realizes that has not the power to do so. Artine said it is great to be back again and see her friends, classmates, and teachers.
“I know most of the students still feel a bit hungover because of the holidays. It’s somewhat a bit weird to be back, doing our usual routines when you’ve been away from school the entire break. As any other school should, we continue with lessons and discussions. Because of the incoming midterms, both students and teachers are loaded with heavy work and have been particularly busy. But, we try to stay positive as it is the new year and a fresh start for us.
In my opinion, I would probably want an extension to our Christmas vacation but obviously, I don’t have power over our school. Nonetheless, it’s great to be back and see my friends, classmates, and teachers again,” Bilbao said.
In an interview with Mr. Prince Dacles, a Psychology teacher from Social Studies Department, he said that he is excited to be back since it is a new year and excited as well to teach new lessons to his students. But, Mr. Dacles felt sad when he realized that he needs to leave his family in Roxas City to work and be able to move forward since Typhoon Ursula hit Roxas City last December.
“Aside from it is my duty, I feel excited since it’s a new year (yehey!) and excited as well to teach new lessons to students. Pero since nabagyohan kami, ka sad lang kay ibilin ko naman ako family para mag-work but we need to move forward and go-go-go!,” Mr. Dacles said.
A graduating student from B.S. Psychology, Cherry Mae Carascal said that she feels great knowing that she and her friends are three months away from graduation but before she gets her diploma, Carascal needs to face stressful workloads she missed because she totally enjoyed her vacation.
“It feels great to see your friends again and the fact that we’re 3 months away from graduation. What’s not great is having to face the stressful workloads I missed because of too much holiday enjoyment,” Cherry said.
Central Philippine University resumed classes on January 6, 2020.

Ms. Narido conveyed her gratefulness to God. She wrote, “I am ecstatic and so grateful for this victory. This is a testament of God’s grace in my life. His grace abounds even more in our weaknesses. I felt zero confidence after taking the board exam because it was so difficult but I just kept reminding myself that God knows His children, He honors His promises, and that He has a better plan for me than the one I have for myself.
I am so grateful for my family, my beloved friends, my professors, and to everyone who has ever put their faith in me. To God be the glory!”

Fernandez, and the strong support of the Social Work faculty members, staff, alumni, and students.”

The road near the Engineering Building being covered by asphalt.
In an interview with Engr. Rhett Baldonado, Director of Facilities Maintenance and Services, he said that the project started last January 4, 2020, Saturday, from 1 PM to 10 PM. The road from Roblee Science Hall to the College of Engineering was the first to be asphalted.
Engr. Baldonado also said that there will be additional roads to asphalted namely:
- Gate 1 to Gate 7
- In front of Administration Building (Gate 2)
- Halfmoon Drive to Gate 3
- New Valentine to Flag Pole
- Centennial Walkway
- Around Big Field
“May additional kita nga mga roads, plan sina ang Gate 1 pakadto Gate 7 na siya, in front of Admin, sa Gate 2, Halfmoon pakadto Gate 3, NV, Flag Pole, then palibot sa Big Field,” Baldonado said.
He added that asphalt pavement is way cheaper and convenient than cement since cemented roads need to undergo a curing period for 30 days, unlike asphalt pavement. The project also costs PHP 7 Million.
A personnel from Facilities , Maintenance and Services doing some ceiling repairs at Half-moon Drive.
“Kung semento, syempre may curing period kita mo mga 30 days, dugay ubrahon na ya. Pero kung i-asphalt overlay mo, ma-agyan mo na dayon basta maayo lang ang base mo. Amo na mostly ah, dasigay kag mas barato, 7 million pesos all in all.
In line with the beautification project, the Halfmoon Drive and Gazebos will be repaired and repainted and they will put some portable plant boxes in Halfmoon drive.
Aside from the revamping of the university’s roads, repairs are also being conducted in the Half-Moon Drive roof.
The Director of Facilities Maintenance and Services said that the project is done in preparation for the Grand Alumni Homecoming at Central that will be on February 5-9, 2020 with the theme: “Central Spirit Lead us Back Home.”
