CPU holds 90th Commencement Exercises
Central Philippine University conferred the degree Doctor of Pedagogy Honoris Causa to Commencement Speaker, Prof. Evangelica D. Padernilla.
Celebrating the culmination of college life—Central Philippine University held its 90th Commencement Exercises of the university colleges at the Rose Memorial Auditorium on November 12, 2017. A total of 410 graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Accountancy, College of Computer Studies, College of Education, College of Hospitality Management, College of Medical Laboratory Science, College of Medicine (Health Fitness and Lifestyle Management), College of Pharmacy, College of Engineering, College of Theology and the Graduate Programs received their diplomas.
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles encouraged graduates to live a life that is rooted in Christ.
Passion and Commitment – Michael Peter Ronio D. Pedronio, AB Political Science gave the response in behalf of the graduates.
The invocation was led by Pastor Ruth G. Lunasco, Associate Pastor, University Church. It was then followed by the singing of the national anthem and the alma mater song, conducted by Mrs. Crista S. Huyong, Director, Cultural Affairs Office.
For his words of welcome, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President, congratulated the graduates and their parents for the accomplishment of finishing their college education, “You have completed your college education and you are about to engage into your professional career. This day is a celebration of your hard work and efforts tempered with the realization that without God, we are nothing. No matter how successful you are in life, without God—it is a life wasted.” Dr. Robles thanked the parents for choosing CPU for their children’s tertiary education. He went on to encourage the graduates to pursue the path of excellence and uphold the Central Spirit, “Always have the drive to excel; have the commitment to choose excellence wherever God will take you. Share what you have and give back. It was not only your hard work but the love and the support of your parents, family, loved ones, and God’s guidance and provision that have led you to this day.”
Mr. Daniel P. Dorillo, President of the CPU Alumni Association Inc. welcomed the graduates to the CPU alumni community.
410 graduates received their diploma during CPU’s 90th Commencement Exercises.
CPU then presented the Conferral of Doctoral Degree, Honoris Causa, Doctor of Pedagogy to Prof. Evangelica Diesto-Padernilla. Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, Vice President for Student Affairs, read the citation and shared the highlights of Prof. Padernilla’s life, “She is a woman of faith; a woman called by God to educate the hearts and minds of the youth. Mrs. Evangelica Diesto-Padernilla started as a classroom teacher, became a student teacher, supervisor, and promoted as principal of the University Elementary School. Her sincere efforts and unprecedented performance made her a recipient of recognition from various local, national and international organizations. She is a Centralian worth emulating—a strong woman of God, committed educator and academic supervisor, loving wife, dedicated mother and doting grandmother.”
The investiture of the hood was led by Dr. Teodoro C. Robles and Atty. Von Lovel D. Bedona, Chairman, CPU Board of Trustees. The diploma was then given by Dr. Robles, assisted by Miss Ruth G. Fernandez, University Registrar.
For the commencement address, Dr. Evangelica Diesto-Padernilla encouraged the graduates with the Word of God and the testimony of her life, “‘This is the day that the Lord has made. We will be glad and rejoice in it.’ Why rejoice? Because God’s plan for your life is to prosper you, to make you successful, as what Jeremiah 29:11 says, ‘For I know that plans I have for you says the Lord plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’”
She further encouraged the graduates with a poem that talks about the importance of being deeply rooted in Christ, “Anchor deep in the soil, root firmly in the sod. And when the winds of fate shall rise and blow across the land to test your strength, and others fall, you will stand out, the victor, the unabased, the unafraid.” Dr. Padernilla shared that there would be greater challenges that lie ahead but taking heart and working hard to overcome them would make one a victor, “Today, the journey is ended, yet the struggles have just begun. If you have exerted much effort during your student days, now you should exert violent effort if you want to succeed in your chosen profession.”
After her message, Dr. Robles, assisted by Miss Fernandez, led the conferral of degrees and investiture of hoods to the 410 graduates.
In his response on behalf of the graduates, Michael Peter Ronio D. Pedronio, Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Summa Cum Laude, encouraged his fellow graduates to excel in their chosen profession and to remain grateful and resilient in the journey of life.
The charge to the graduates was given by Rev. Cris Amorsolo V. Sian, Senior Pastor, University Church. After which, Mr. Daniel P. Dorillo, President, CPU Alumni Association, Inc., led the induction of new CPU alumni members and welcomed the graduates to the alumni community.
Tabaodaja speaks at 1st Semester 2017-2018 Baccalaureate Service
Rev. Rosan Valencua-Tabaodaja highlights the importance of honoring one’s parents in order to be successful in life.
The College Baccalaureate Service held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium at 8:30 AM on Sunday, November 12, 2017, was a celebration of gratefulness. It was filled with expressions of thanks and happiness as the graduates were to be conferred with their diplomas in the afternoon, during the Graduation Ceremony for the First Semester 2017-2018.
In her inspiring message, “A Walk to Remember,” Rev. Rosan Valencia-Tabaodaja, Lady Minister of Mashville Baptist Church in Sucat, Parañaque City, emphasized three reminders which she felt should be significant to the graduates: First, to walk with character (referring to the verse in Psalms1:1). Second, to walk in wisdom (referring to the verse in James 1:15). Tabaodaja defined knowledge as a collection of knowledge, while wisdom is the application of knowledge. The third is to walk with consistency, “The consistency of our action to what we believe.” Her final advice to the graduates was to remember one of the laws in the Ten Commandments, to “honor thy father and thy mother.”
Emily-Victoria J. Oke, AB English, Cum Laude and Loyalty Awardee shared her testimony to the graduates.
In her response speech, Emily-Victoria Oke, Cum Laude and Loyalty Awardee, shared proof of how God helps His children. She narrated how God provided her with a deeper understanding of what God wanted her to be. She looked back to her father’s intention for her to enroll in another school, but she landed in CPU and was so blessed. She believed that “this honor and achievement is all God’s work.” She considered her graduation day as a day of hopes and dreams. Oke is the daughter of former Dean of CPU College of Commerce, the late Dr. Olufonso Oke.
Words of wisdom were also shared by Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President, when he encouraged the students and the parents to focus on what is important for success in his opening remarks. He urged them not to be distracted by unnecessary things that hinder the journey to success. Dr. Robles further emphasized the need to be grateful for all the blessings. He also thanked everyone for coming to the annual Baccalaureate Service of CPU.

University Church Associate Pastor, Rev. Samuel R. Escobin led the invocation. It was followed by the response song and the Litany of Gratitude. The reading of the Word (from Psalms 1: 1-6) was led by Jufeel P. Pulyosa, Cum Laude, BSEd Social Studies. The Bahandi Singers rendered an intermission number before the Baccalaureate preacher was introduced by University Church Associate Pastor, Rev. Ruth G. Lunasco.
The Baccalaureate Service ended at around 10:00 AM with the Bahandi singers sending off the graduates with their song.

Showcasing the best of the Philippines—The Central Philippine University Handbell Ringers performed during the closing ceremony of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and handing over of the ASEAN chairmanship to the Republic of Singapore at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center on November 14, 2017. The CPU Handbell Ringers was invited to the event through the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
The CPU Handbell Ringers was invited to be part of the prestigious line up of talents that entertained the guests of the said event. The group performed popular songs, namely, “Festival Carillon,” “Hymn to Joy,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “Fireworks” and an ASEAN medley. According to Mrs. Hermely A. Jalando-on, adviser, it was an honor to represent CPU to the international community, “We performed five songs in front of the ASEAN heads of states and other dignitaries around the globe. It was a joy to showcase Centralian talent to the guests and ASEAN members who joined the summit.”
The CPU Handbell Ringers is a religious cultural group of Central Philippine University. Through the leadership of Dr. Anita U. Illenberger, the former director of the CPU Cultural Affairs, the group was revived and reorganized in October 2006 after more than 10 years of inactivity. It is composed of students, faculty, staff, and alumni of CPU, most of whom are also members of the University Church which has served as its home base since the handbells were first rung in the 1970s. Previous trainers and conductors include Ms. Elizabeth Taylor, missionary to CPU in the 1970s; Mrs. Patricia Lopez; Mrs. Alice Thompson, visiting missionary to CPU in 1988-1989; Mrs. Thelma Parreñas; Mr. Solomon Estilo, Jr.; and Mrs. Eleanor Ruth Fabula. Dr. Mai Lynn Bermejo-Jacar is the current director of the group, having been a member herself of the handbell choir trained by Mrs. Alice Thompson.
CPU Kindergarten holds Thanksgiving Service

The Central Philippine University Kindergarten held its Thanksgiving Service at the University Church on October 10, 2017.
The opening prayer was said by MJ Amber Gwen S. Plana, Kinder 2 Kindness. It was then followed by the signing of the gathering song “10,000 Reasons.” For the thanksgiving prayer, the student representatives of the different sections led the prayer: Ma. Leina Graciel Hilado, Kinder 2 Mercy, led the prayer thanking God for family; Amarantha Elle Hablado, Kinder 2 Goodness, led the prayer thanking God for nature; Ferjenna Delle Torre, Kinder 1 Hope, led the prayer thanking God for their school; Frean Jeavi Lagon, Nursery Charity, led the prayer thanking God for the food; and Daniel Glory, Kinder 2 Gentleness, led the payer thanking God for friendship.
Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, Director, Office of Communications, shared the importance of thanking God for time, talent and treasure.
For his message, Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, talked about the importance of thanking God for the people who shared their time, talent and treasure as highlighted by CPU’s 112th Founding Anniversary theme.
For time, he shared the story of Rev. William O. Valentine, the first principal of Jaro Industrial School, now CPU, “Rev. William O. Valentine devoted his time as a missionary to Burma, but afterwards he got sick with severe sunstroke. On his hospital bed, he questioned God why he got sick even though he was obedient to His calling. But soon after, in the same hospital he met his wife, Ina Jane Van Allen, and together they went to the Philippines and dedicated the rest of their lives serving Christ.” For talent, Rev. Jalando-on highlighted the life of Rev. Dr. Francis Howard Rose, described by Rev. Henry Munger as the “most stimulating, gifted and erudite missionary to serve Central.” Rev. Dr. Rose composed most of CPU’s Central Songs; built a pipe organ using local materials; was responsible for the building of some of CPU’s iconic infrastructures such as the Franklin Hall, Roblee Hall, and Weston Hall; designed the CPU seal (it has 12 rays representing 12 tribes of Israel, 12 disciples of Jesus Christ); and coined the term “Central Spirit.” Rose also unified the color of the campus by painting the buildings green with white trim. And lastly, for treasure, Rev. Jalando-on talked about the life of John D. Rockefeller. CPU was established through a grant given by the oil magnate philanthropist to the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, “John D. Rockefeller shared his treasure to help missionaries establish schools and churches all over the world.”
Kindergarteners gave their drawings and fruit offerings during the Thanksgiving Service.
Rev. Jalando-on concluded, “Valentine, Rose and Rockefeller are people who shared their time, talent and treasure and their lives are worth thanking God for.”
After the message, the kindergarteners gave their birthday offerings while the CPU-K Pipers (Flute Recorder Group) rendered a song number.
The closing prayer and benediction was led by Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on.
CBA holds Candle Lighting Ceremony for New Accountants

The Centralian Spirit of Excellence – Central Philippine University welcomed 29 new accountants to its roster of outstanding alumni. To formally welcome them to the professional world, the College of Business and Accountancy together with the CPU Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants held a Candle Lighting at Rose Memorial Auditorium on November 15, 2017.
For the devotional, guest speaker, Mr. Tobyjohn D. Gemora encouraged the graduates to pursue God in their career as new accountants. He shared Matthew 6:33 says “But seek first His kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Acting Dean, Dr. Lorna T. Grande, in her opening remarks, congratulated the graduates and their parents. “This is a day of victory. We welcome our new Centralian accountants to the professional world. Finally, all the hard work and commitment you have given has led you into this great success of becoming certified accountants.”

The candle lighting ceremony is an event of thankfulness to God for the success He gave to the new Centralian accountants and to CPU.

The College of Business and Accountancy commits passion and hard work work in mentoring the next generation of accountants.
After the opening remarks, the newly passed accountants shared their testimonies. One by one, stories of perseverance, hard work and love for family, CPU and above all Jesus were shared by Centralians. With the dream of becoming certified public accountants now a reality, the Centralian graduates anchor themselves in the faith that CPU has encouraged them to take root in – the faith that will help them become exemplary Christian learners for life.
Mr. Romeo Latorza gave the response from a parent. He thanked CPU for the guidance and the support in helping the new accountants achieve their dream. He shares his joy along with other parents who celebrate their children’s success.
The lighting of candles then followed, the Centralian community hopes that the new accountants will shine not only in their respective career but also shine that others may see their good works and praise their Father heaven as stated in Matthew 5:16.
The closing remarks was given by Prof. Russali S. Baldevarona followed by the closing prayer led by Prof. Sharon G. Munar.

CPU faculty stayed at the university’s International Academic Exchange Hotel. They were introduced to ZZUIT administrators, department heads, as well as the faculty of the School of Electromechanical Engineering. Dean Molina represented CPU in ZZUIT’s 20th Founding Anniversary Celebration.
ZZUIT and CPU also discussed partnerships and programs for future academic collaboration. The said visit enabled CPU faculty to observe ZZUIT’s methods and application of teaching and classroom and laboratory management.
Centralian “Ben” Jimena receives reappointment to City Hall
Ben Jimena commits his efforts in promoting Iloilo as a prime tourist destination.
Former Iloilo City’s Tourism Officer, Centralian Benito Jimena is now the Liaison Officer of the City Mayor’s Office. Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III made the announcement after he vowed to boost the tourism industry and give all the necessary support to the City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO).
“He (Jimena) is there as a sort of volunteer. He will be my consultant and I will include him in a task force that will oversee all our festivals,” said Espinosa. The mayor noted that Jimena will be the contact person between the Office of the City Mayor and CTDO. Jimena will also make sure that all the preparations including the venue and programs of events are well-prepared, Espinosa stressed.
It was noted that various events such as the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival, Paraw Regatta Festival, Independence Day, Rizal Day, Andres Bonifacio Day, National Heroes Day among others will need a facilitator like Jimena.
Jimena served during the time of former Mayor and now Iloilo City Lone District Representative Jerry P. Treñas before he retired in 2015.
Jimena is a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering graduate of Central Philippine University in 1971. He served as part of the full-time faculty at the CPU Department of Chemistry in 1971-1974 and as part-time instructor in 1980-1981, 1993-1995, 1996-1997, 2000-2002. He also served as treasurer of CPUAAI Board of Directors in 1998 and member of the CPU Corporation Investment Committee in 2001-2003.
Centralian is Best Delegate of AYIMUN 2017

John Elmer Loretizo, a 5th year BS Software Engineering student of Central Philippine University, was awarded for being the best delegate during the Asia Youth International Model United Nations ASEAN Regional Forum held at Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 3-6, 2017.
The National Model United Nations website (www.nmun.org) describes Model United Nations as “an academic simulation which incorporates UN’s rules, procedures and workflow between international delegations, Executive Board and International Press while involving qualified, upper crust parliamentary debaters from all academic backgrounds, undergraduate or even postgraduate.”
On his Facebook post, Loretizo expressed his gratitude to the ASEAN Regional Forum delegates, “This award is just an incentive for me because it’s really the efforts and dedication shown by my fellow delegates that has definitely pushed me to do my best. So much love for all the ASEAN Regional Forum delegates. We may be the smallest council but we surely have the strongest bond!”
It can be recalled that Loretizo was also awarded as NatGeos’ “Everyday Genius” for his innovative phone application PaDS or Patient in Transit Diagnostics System. It is a mobile app that sends a patients diagnostics to the target hospital for treatment preparation.

The Rotary Club of Jaro Centraline (RCJC) led by Club President Jude Marsh Grande greeted Enigardo ‘Jundad’ Legislador, Jr., Governor, Rotary International District 3850 during the latter’s visit to Central Philippine University in Jaro, Iloilo City on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. The occasion was primarily scheduled for the district governor to meet the RCJC officers and members at their university-based headquarters.
During his visit, the Rotary District Governor admired the new buildings and the way the school grounds and buildings are managed. He informed his co-Rotarians how studying in CPU can prepare the students for a good future. As an example, he referred to three sisters who are currently working as nurses in his clinic. The three are Nursing graduates of CPU.
Dinner and a short program for the Rotary District Governor was prepared which follows a Rotary tradition every year. Legislador gave an inspirational message commending how good it is for RCJC to be a partner of Central Philippine University for progress. He also acknowledged the scholarship program that the Rotary Club of Jaro Centraline extends to poor but deserving students of CPU. As a special alumni chapter of Central Philippine University Alumni Association, RCJC has also created projects and events relevant to the humanitarian programs of Rotary International.

He is a general surgeon and the President of Medical Associates Diagnostic Center, Inc. in Kabankalan. He was introduced to Rotary in 1992 when he was selected as a member of the Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team to D-3070 in India. He joined the Rotary Club of Kabankalan in 2000 and served as its President in 2004, during the Centennial Year of Rotary International. District Governor Jundad is a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow (MPHF) and a member of the Paul Harris Society whose members commit to contribute at least US$1,000 a year to The Rotary Foundation.

In Focus: Centralian Agriculturist among the new breed of Agricultural Development Officers of Iloilo

The Weekly Centralian Link continues to feature many Centralian achievers, winners, movers, industrialists and entrepreneurs who are successful in their own careers both in public and private enterprises, institutions and industries. These alumni attributed their success to Central Philippine University.
One of those achievers is Elias V. Sandig, Jr. from Bitadton Sur, Culasi, Antique. He is Assistant Provincial Agriculturist, Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office, and former Agricultural Development Officer since 2011 at ANIAD Foundation Program Management Office. Elias V. Sandig, Jr. is a CPU Graduate of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Major in Agronomy in 1978 and his Master of Science in Extension Education, University of the Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna in 1989. He served CPU as instructor and farm research coordinator for the College of Agriculture in 1978-1980.
Other notable posts he has occupied include: CFMT-Agricultural Extension Coordinator, Philippine Cotton Corporation in 1980-1981; Agricultural Extension Specialist I at the Rainfed Agriculture Development (Iloilo) Project, Ministry of Agriculture and Food in 1981-1984; Graduate/Research Assistant, International Programme Management Office International Rice Research Institute in 1987-1991; Agricultural Development Officer, Antique Integrated Area Development Foundation, Inc. in 1991-1995; Supervising Agriculturist Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office in 1996-2011.
Sandig cultivated faith and dedication since his student days at the CPU College of Agriculture. He believes that there is money in agriculture if one is patient and industrious. His overarching desire to share the “bounty” of technical knowledge and operations he learned from CPU is what has made him a “cut above the rest.” He is admired by everyone in his department. The trust of his employer and co-workers is something he attributes to his training and education from Central Philippine University.
Mr. Sandig is married to Teresita Demafiles Baliguat of Bitadton sur, Culasi, Antique and they have seven children.
