CPU President Dr. Teodoro Robles gave the Thanksgiving Greetings.

Students, faculty, and staff gathered for a Thanksgiving Worship Service on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at the University Church.

In his thanksgiving greetings, CPU President Dr. Teodoro Robles expressed his thanks to the Lord for sustaining the university for the last 114 years. He also said that everyone should unite together in working and doing God’s work at the university.


Rev. Samuel Escobin talked about the life of Zaccheus for the thanksgiving message.

All ministers working in CPU rendered a song number entitled “Thank You Lord (For the Trials That Come My Way)”.

University Church Associate Pastor Rev. Samuel Escobin’s thanksgiving reflection was about the life of Zaccheus and how he found his value in God. “We enjoy the value God has showered unto us, not in the terms of Zaccheus but in our own terms. That is why we come here today to show our gratitude and thanksgiving to the Lord our God.” He also said that it is thanking God through service and giving that we become a channel of blessing to others.

Participants of the training gathered at the Immanuel Christian Fellowship.

The CPU Dr. Lucio Tan College of Hospitality Management (CHM) together with Signpost Philippines Inc. conducted a virtual training on Food Handling, Food Safety and preparation entitled “Pagulikid sa Komunidad” on April 28, May 5, and May 12, 2021.

CHM Dean Prof. Ma.Medalla P. Baliao gave the welcome remarks and Signpost Philippines Inc. Director Mrs. Febie Ibojos expressed her appreciation to the College of Hospitality Management for spearheading the training.

A total of 41 residents from Brgy. West Habog-habog, Molo, and Bgy. Buntatala, Leganes were the participants of the said training which took place at Immanuel Christian Church, La Paz. They also learned food preservation and dessert preparation.

The training, which is one of CHM’s community engagement programs aims to give the participants an opportunity to start their own business during the ongoing pandemic as well as assist in the needs of their respective barangays’ community pantries.

The CMM members are engaged in mass media – broadcast, print, and social media blogging. Former City Councilor and Centralian Attorney Joshua Alim is among the founding members of CMM.

Alim, in his post on Facebook, called all Centralians in Mass Media to “continue to serve our Alma Mater for the greater Glory of the Almighty Father.”

The newly elected officers will take their oath of office during the opening of the Festival of Lights and Music at Central on December 6, 2019.

Vince currently takes charge of the Archives and Special Collections and the Institutional Repository of the Henry Luce III Library.

CPU Henry Luce III Library (HLL) librarian Vince Ervin Villarete Palcullo is one of the recipients of Chulalongkorn University’s Graduate Scholarship Programme for ASEAN or Non-ASEAN Countries.

Chulalongkorn University, a public research academic institution in Thailand has consistently topped the QS World Rankings in the country for 8 years. Its Graduate Scholarship Programme for ASEAN or Non-ASEAN countries was established to provide financial assistance to international students who wish to pursue their graduate studies in the university.

Palcullo is the only Filipino recipient of the scholarship who was accepted in the Master of Arts Program in Information Studies of the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Arts.

He finished his degree in Library and Information Science, cum laude from Central Philippine University in 2016. He previously worked for the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) as well as the South East Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC).

He currently takes charge of the Archives and Special Collections and the Institutional Repository of the Henry Luce III Library. He has also published several papers with colleagues in the academe.

Palcullo expressed his gratitude to University Libraries Director Prof. Cynthia Pelena, University President Dr. Teodoro Robles, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Irving Rio for their support. He would like also to give special thanks to Dr. Merle Junsay and Mr. Daryl Superio for their invaluable help and trust.

Central Philippine University and the Filipinas Heritage Library under the Ayala Foundation unveiled “Women and War: An exhibition on women workers, warriors, and survivors of World War II” with an opening reception on November 12, 2019, at Henry Luce III Library.

Featured in the exhibit are guerillas, spies, artists, writers and comfort women who played significant roles during the war. Among some of the women from Iloilo included in the exhibit were Lourdes “Yay Oding” Divinagracia who was known as Iloilo’s last surviving comfort woman, Maria Sirilan and Encarnacion Lavente who served as Nursing Aides in Camp Tiring, Cabatuan.

In her opening remarks, Vice President for Finance and Administration Dr. Florence P. Bogacia stressed the importance of knowing our history and remembering the sacrifices of our countrymen who suffered during the war. She also thanked the Filipinas Heritage Library for continuously working with Central Philippine University Henry Luce III Library, specifically, in the digitization of some of its archives.

Present during the event were CPU officials and family members of some of the women who were featured in the exhibit. Representatives from the Ayala Foundation headed by Associate Manager Simon de Leon also graced the exhibit opening.

Women and War is open to the public and will run until December 12.

Dr. Ananias C. Sabijon, Jr. (Ph.D. in Education, Curriculum Development), Director of Central Philippine University Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) was invited and served as the Session Chair of the Virtual Panel Discussion on the “Role of Principals to Enhance Science Learning,” a Technical Session in connection with the 2nd International Conference on STEAM 2021.

The eight other expert educators and principals from Nepal, Bangladesh, Philippines, India, and Vietnam joined as panelists during the technical session and panel discussion. Prof. Olga Shkrabachenka, Country Head, GEIST Ukraine Chapter, served as the moderator.

It can be recalled that Dr. Sabijon started his teaching career as an elementary school teacher at Central Philippine University Elementary School (CPUES), where he taught Science and Health, and Mathematics. He was a regional awardee (Region VI) of the Dr. Juan Salcedo, Jr. Science Education Award, and a 9th placer in the national level.

In addition, he was the principal of CPU Elementary School when it was awarded the highest level of accreditation for elementary school, (Level III) by the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities, Accrediting Agency Incorporated (ACSCU-ACI). On the attainment of the highest level of accreditation by the university elementary school, he has acknowledged the strong support from CPU administration, former CPU Elementary School Principal Dr. Evangelica Diesto-Padernilla, Consultant, Dr. Carmen P. Santos (now a member of the CPU Board of Trustees), elementary school teachers, parents (specifically, the P.T.A.), pupils, and other stakeholders.

As a science teacher and educator, he has received training from Central Philippine University, West Visayas State University, and from the University of the Philippines- Diliman in Quezon City. Likewise, as a Science and Educational Administration Specialist at Hong Kong Baptist University (H.K.B.U.), Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong (SAR); and at Valparaiso University (V.U.), Indiana, USA, as a United Board (UBCHEA) fellow.

Recently, after he participated in a training held in Manila, Philippines, he was awarded the certificate as potential Institutional Sustainability Assessment (ISA) Assessor by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Republic of the Philippines. In the same year, he was awarded the certificate as the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) Whole Person Education (WPE) Academy participant. During the academy, he was trained as WPE trainer together with other participants from selected universities in Southeast Asia. The academy sessions and the harvest seminar were held at Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines and at Sanata Dharma University, Jogyakarta, Indonesia, respectively.

During the synthesis part of the panel discussion, Session Chair Dr. Sabijon reported the following:

To enhance Science/STEAM learning, the panelists/principals pointed out the importance of creating a STEAM, specifically technology-structured and enhanced teaching-learning environment in the schools, the inclusion of real-life school-related activities, use of research and experiential and problem-based learning, and other inquiry-based methods of teaching and learning. Specific activities like the conduct of science fairs, field trips, and other community engaging activities have also been highlighted.

Most importantly, highlighting the role of the principals as instructional leaders in relation to Science/STEAM learning, the panelists shared some actions they have done such as the: conduct of curriculum reviews, daily lesson planning, and the inclusion of STEAM/STEM subjects in the formal school curriculum.

The International Conference was organized by the Global Educators Initiative for Sustainable Transformation (GEIST) International Foundation (GIF), in collaboration with other international sponsoring agencies, with the theme ”Science Education with Innovation.” The international event was attended by 128 delegates from 26 countries and six continents.

Dr. Sabijon is thankful to the GEIST International Foundation and to CPU for the opportunity to serve as Session Chair in the international level, specifically to Dr. Sabyasachi Majumdar, President of GIEST International Foundation (Global), and to CPU President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles for his approval to participate in said event and for the strong support.

With thanksgiving and grateful hearts, representatives of Bachelor of Science in Nursing batch 1993 paid a visit and donated an amount to Central Philippine University College of Nursing on November 18, 2019. The additional donation is specifically intended for the Virtual Laboratory Phase 2 – Lucina Fidelis Marie.

In an interview, the batch representatives, namely Cheryl Arañador-Dueñas, Dessy Suyo, John Dexter Alejano, Joy Lacson and Gigie Supeña, shared their experiences as they visit Central Philippine University once again. One common thing the group appreciated was the presence of the Virtual Laboratory in their college, made possible through the effort and support of their alumni association. In addition, Mr. Alejano who returned to CPU after 22 years said, “I’m so glad and grateful for coming back here. And I am very impressed with the College of Nursing now.”

When asked about Central Spirit, Mrs. Arañador-Dueñas enthusiastically said, “Of course, the spirit is there within us. We give it towards our patients. Whenever we give patient care, lain gid ya kung Centralian mag-deal sa pasyente.” For Batch 1993, the Central Spirit within them never waned. It continues to glow. It is basically inculcated within and it will shine in whatever one does.

College of Nursing Dean Atty. Salex Alibogha was among the presenters in the international conference on Global Change Makers held virtually on July 14, 2021.

Atty. Aliboga’s presentation entitled “Caring, Compassion and Resiliency during Crisis: The
CCINAA and CPUCN Strengths-Based Way” focused on the strong partnership of the College of
Nursing faculty, students and alumni and how their collective effort has harnessed potential and individual worth and capabilities in meeting the demands of Nursing and Health Care.

The conference was spearheaded by the Canadian Academy of Nursing in collaboration with nurse theorist and author of Strength-Based Nursing and Health Care (SBNH) Dr. Laura Gottlieb. It was attended by 200 hundred participants from 29 countries.

Central Philippine University has actively participated in the 3rd Asian Universities Digital Resource Network  (AUDRN)   #eyeball2019 Youth Meet-up with the theme “Igniting Creativity in Local Knowledge in the context of 4th Industrial Revolution” at Visayan State University, Baybay, Leyte on November 13-15, 2019. Two students of CPU namely, Princes Elaine Y. Espongja a second year student of Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies and Claribel Joy G. Deguit, a first year  Bachelor of Science in Information of Technology participated in the three-day event. Along with them were Dr. Margen A. Java, Director of Student Development and Programs and Mrs. Gift D. Tragico, Senior High School Guidance Counselor. The Centralian delegates were led by Dr. Reynaldo N. Dusaran, AUDRN Coordinator of CPU.

The #eyeball2019 Youth Meet-up yielded linkages with its stakeholders while advocating the importance of local knowledge in this 4th wave of the Industrial Revolution. During the 3-day conference, all participating schools showcased their Integration Plan on how they could incorporate Local knowledge in Sports and Wellness, Community Engagement, and Research-based curriculum.

AUDRN had three simultaneous Seminar-Workshops on Responsible Use and Sharing of Local Knowledge in Social Media, Gender Fair Education in the Collection and Preservation of Local Knowledge, and Data Privacy Involving Human Participants in Local Knowledge Research to enlighten the participants on the different pressing issues in our society and how they can possibly be addressed through incorporating Local Knowledge. As an output of the workshop, every participating school created project proposals regarding gender-fair, responsible use of media, and data privacy by incorporating Local Knowledge.

Participants had a great fun night in socializing and showcasing Filipino culture by wearing their provinces’ local costumes. They also enjoyed the beautiful campus of Visayas State University- the second largest state university in the Philippines.

The 3rd AUDRN #eyeball2019 Youth Meet-up may bring forth an edge to CPU in becoming a stronger advocate of Local knowledge in the 4th wave of the Industrial Revolution.

Dr. Aries Roda Romallosa speaks in the 6th webinar of Laye.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs held the sixth lecture for “Laye: A webinar series on Philippine Statutory and Regulatory Laws” on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 via CPU TV Facebook live. The speaker for the said lecture is Dr. Aries Roda D. Romallosa, Chairperson, Department of Agricultural Engineering and Environmental Management, CPU College of Agriculture, Resources, and Environmental Sciences.

The webinar touched on The Republic Act (RA) 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

During the lecture, Dr. Romallosa talked about the history of Solid Waste Management as well as the signifcance of 4 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover). She also explained some of the important terms in the law such as Waste Diversion, Agriculture Waste, and Biodegradable Waste.

The Republic Act (RA) 9003 provides the necessary policy framework, institutional mechanisms, and mandate to the local government units (LGUs) to achieve 25% waste reduction through establishing an integrated solid waste management plans.

Through the webinar series, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs aims to enlighten the Centralian community especially students about some recent laws of the Philippines.

A historic win for the CPU Golden Lions Table Tennis Teams! It was a complete sweep from Elementary, High School, College in all categories and both girls and boys, and men and women in the 2019 Iloilo PRISAA Games. This was the first time in the history of CPU sports.
