ELS students celebrating their accomplishment of completing their final defense.
On April 15, the third-year students of English Language Studies (ELS) defended their undergraduate research at the IELTS Center on the 4th floor of the Henry Luce Library.
The ELS students gathered at the IELTS Center at around 1 o’clock in the afternoon to present and defend their findings for their undergraduate thesis. They gave their best foot forward in showing the panel theirs results and findings of their chosen topic. Each student presented their unique studies that centers around linguistics and languages; all giving incredible insights and perspectives on literature, media, and the like.
The panel consists of 3 faculty members: Ms. Bonna S. Palma, the dean of CAS of Western Visayas University; Ms. Jarrlyn Jaco, and Ms. Evy Jansien Victoria Casas, both faculty of DLMCH. The defense was moderated by Dr. Analee Cocjin, the DLMCH chairperson and the advisor for the class. They all gave valuable insights, corrections, and advice for how to further improve their research, and gave them encouraging words to keep pushing forward. They took their time going through each chapter of each student, paying attention to the details needed to improve and change for their work to have the best outcome. The students were diligent in taking down notes and further asking clarifying questions; it was a very productive day for everyone involved.
This research defense provided valuable insight for the students, and a valuable reminder of curiosity, perseverance, and endurance. These students were able to complete the requirements needed for their research in a short amount of time, but they still managed to present interesting conclusions and results that support and align with their research objectives. This was a very fulfilling day for the students of ELS as they are proud of getting to achieve this feat of being able to complete a research paper individually.
