DLMCH Faculty Members and BA English Language Studies gather for a Research Training Seminar at the CPU Knowledge Development Center (CPU-KDC) of Henry Luce Library III.

The Department of Languages, Mass Communication, and Humanities (DLMCH) held a Research Training Seminar on September 4, 2026 at the CPU Knowledge Development Center (CPU-KDC) of Henry Luce Library III.

Attendees were third-year students of the Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (BA ELS) program. The event served as a guide in conducting undergraduate language research.

DLMCH Chair Dr. Annalee L. Cocjin and CPU-CAS Dean Dr. Stella G. Fernandez shared their welcoming remarks during the opening program.

In the morning session, the first discussion was led by the Research Ethics and Review Board (RERB) Chair Dr. Joy G. Raso and Vice Chair Dr. Renia F. De la Pena. The talk focused on the requirements, timeline and importance of the research ethics review.

“The welfare of the research participants is a priority and a shared responsibility between stakeholders.” Dr. Raso said.

Furthermore, Dr. De la Pena said that research studies must have a social value, with its benefits outweighing risks.

The discussion was succeeded by the presentations of research papers by the DLMCH faculty members Dr. Clarece Benjamin, Dr. Melliane Mangana, and Prof. Gleason Parcia. DLMCH Alumni Kairos Rye Jalando-on and Kyra Veloso also shared their undergraduate thesis findings.

The afternoon session started at 1:00 p.m. with a lecture by West Visayas State University Faculty and Ethics member Dr. Jason C. Cocjin on the approaches in Qualitative Research. Dr. Cocjin zeroed in on the identification of research gaps and the scaffolded research approach.

“Good research must bridge a gap or solve a problem in the field. While interest is good, it is not enough. We are looking for the gap.”

This was followed by a second lecture on Critical Discourse Analysis by Dr. Floralie L. Inayan, English Department Chair of Philippine Science Highschool – West Visayas Campus. The discussion revolved on the methodology and frameworks of CDA for qualitative research.

“CDA is important because it insists that language is never neutral. It implies the play of power relations and ideology,” Dr. Inayan explained.

The program ended at 4:30 in the afternoon. The said event was also organized by the fourth-year students of the BA ELS program.
