In an extraordinary demonstration of scientific mastery, unyielding perseverance, and unity of purpose, fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Biology students specializing in Microbiology from Central Philippine University (CPU) achieved a landmark sweep at the Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM), Inc. Visayas Microbiology Olympiad 2026. Held on October 14, 2026, at Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod, the competition gathered top biological minds from premier universities across the Visayas region. When the final scores were tallied, the Centralian delegation stood triumphant at the pinnacle of both major categories, bringing home a historic double victory that will echo through the halls of the university for years to come.
The high-stakes academic competition tested the depth and breadth of the students’ knowledge across complex microbiological disciplines—including general microbiology, microbial physiology, medical microbiology, microbial ecology, food microbiology, and virology. In the Individual Category, John Lei Villar delivered a stellar performance to secure the Championship Title, showcasing an intricate grasp of the microscopic world and an impressive composure under pressure. Meanwhile, in the Team Category, the formidable triad of Christina Paula Alicer, Kiara Beatriz Bonifacio, and Nicole Mallorca synthesized their collective strengths, sharp analytical thinking, and seamless teamwork to capture the Championship Title, cementing CPU’s dominance on the regional stage.
Behind this monumental achievement lies a foundation of dedicated mentorship and tireless preparation. Crucial to their journey was the staunch backing and expert academic guidance of esteemed microbiology faculty members, Dr. Rolando V. Pakingking, Jr. and Dr. Jayvee J. Jore. Their wisdom, technical insights, and continuous encouragement provided the student-scholars with the added confidence and technical edge necessary to excel at the highest regional level.
Building upon this foundation, the champions were guided every step of the way by their coaches, Ms. Gretchelle Anne E. Ponsaran and Asst. Prof. Amafe B. Gavile-Torrecampo. Through long hours of rigorous review, critical discussion, and intellectual sharpening, their coaches provided not only the academic framework necessary to tackle complex contest scenarios, but also the steadfast moral support that turned potential into triumph.
This milestone is equally a testament to the high-caliber education cultivated within the Life Sciences Department (LSD) under the leadership of Department Chairperson Dr. Laureen B. Morillo-Manalo. Through a research-driven curriculum and an environment that demands both academic rigor and hands-on laboratory expertise, the department consistently prepares its students to stand toe-to-toe with the best in the nation. This culture of excellence is strongly fortified by the broader institutional support and vision of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), led by College Dean Dr. Stella G. Fernandez, whose ongoing commitment to scientific development and student empowerment continues to yield exceptional leaders.
Beyond the gold certificates and regional acclaim, this victory embodies the essence of the Centralian spirit. It serves as tangible proof that knowledge, when paired with faith, discipline, and purpose, becomes a powerful force capable of inspiring others. The success of these four senior students demonstrates that academic aspirations are not merely abstract goals, but milestones waiting to be realized through hard work and shared dedication.
As the CPU Biological Society, the Life Sciences Department, and the entire university community join together in jubilation, we celebrate not just a moment of victory, but a legacy of excellence. To our newly crowned micro-champions—John Lei, Christina, Kiara, and Nicole—thank you for carrying the Centralian banner with honor and brilliance. You have made your department, your college, and your university profoundly proud!
