Central Philippine University held its 121st Foundation Day Wreath-Laying and Memorial Service on October 1, 2026, at the Philippine American Cemetery in Commission Civil, Jaro, Iloilo City, with the theme “Central Spirit: Uniting Generations.”
Despite the slight drizzle, the memorial service brought together members of the University community to commemorate CPU’s 121st year, honor its founders and pioneers, and remember those whose lives and service contributed to the development of the institution.
CPU President Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, in his welcome and greetings, emphasized the importance of remembering the University’s history and expressing gratitude for its heritage.
“We have gathered here once again, as we do so every year because we want to remember and be thankful for our past,” Dagohoy said.
He also urged Centralians to reflect on their relationship with the institution and the legacy they have inherited.
The service opened with a call to gathering based on Psalm 136:1, “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His love endures forever,” followed by the opening hymn “How Firm a Foundation.”

Dr. Milanie C. Arandela, Acting Dean of the College of Theology, led the invocation.
The program included a litany titled “The Lord Is My Strength,” based on Psalm 118:14 and written by Hopevale martyr Jennie Clare Adams. The litany recalled the faith of those who became part of CPU’s history and its Christian heritage.
Rev. Dr. Francis Neil F. Jalando-on, Director of the Communications Office, delivered a reflection on CPU’s history, tracing its roots to the Baptist mission that came to Iloilo in 1900.
He recalled that the institution began as a mission centered on preaching, healing, and teaching before developing into an educational institution. The Jaro Industrial School was established in 1905 with 20 boys and eventually developed into Central Philippine College before becoming Central Philippine University in 1953.
The University experienced significant challenges during World War II, including the destruction of its campus. Its subsequent rebuilding marked another important chapter in its history, with the institution continuing to expand its academic programs and service to the community.

CPU also transitioned to Filipino leadership, with Dr. Rex Divinagracia Drilon becoming its first Filipino president in 1966.
Today, CPU continues the mission established by its founders through education, research, service, and Christian formation.
Following the historical reflection, a moment of silent prayer was observed in remembrance of the University’s founders and pioneers.
A floral offering was then held as a tribute to those who contributed to the establishment, growth, and continuing mission of CPU. The offering symbolized gratitude and respect for their enduring contributions to the University.
The CPU community also recited the Words of Commitment, pledging to uphold the vision of the founders, live out the faith passed on through generations, and continue the University’s mission.
The service concluded with the Alma Mater Song, followed by the closing prayer and benediction led by Rev. Dr. Cris Amorsolo V. Sian, Senior Minister of the University Church.
Rev. Karel Grace Victoria served as worship leader, with Rev. Franz Hestia Lovejoy Q. Leysa as song leader and Pastor Louvel Edson L. Caspe as accompanist.
Following the service, the new “121” landmark signage was unveiled at the CPU Big Field near the Kindergarten as the University celebrated its 121st Founding Anniversary.
