James Kaiser Canong, an Ilonggo pianist and student of Central Philippine University (CPU), secured second place in the Piano (Open) Category grand finals of the 13th Asia Arts Festival held at the School of the Arts in Singapore on July 12, 2026.
Canong competed against participants from Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other Asian countries, earning recognition for his performance in the international competition.
At the age of six, Canong had already developed an interest in playing the piano, which eventually grew into a passion for music.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Ronny Poblacion commended Canong’s piano skills, particularly when he played “Fantasie Impromptu” by Chopin.
“I’m extremely proud of this young guy under my camp. At 16 he plays piano like a virtuoso,” Poblacion captioned.
He also performed as a featured guest at the “Harmonies of the World” Piano Festival at the University of San Agustin on September 27, 2026, where he played Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee.”
In an interview with DYRI RMN Iloilo, Canong encouraged aspiring musicians to remain patient and continue practicing as they pursue their passion.
“Patience, perseverance and dedication for passion in music. Always strive for excellence,” Canong emphasized.
He also highlighted the importance of hard work, sharing the principle of pursuing one’s goals with “1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” He stressed the value of finding something or someone that will fuel the heart to strive and then put in the effort needed to achieve success.
Canong’s father, Mr. Nestor Canong, head of Iloilo City Task Force on Moral and Values Formation, also expressed pride in his son’s accomplishments at a young age.
He encouraged parents to fully support their children’s dreams, emphasizing that such support allows them to discover their potential and contributes positively to their growth.
“Importante gid nga hatagan gid naton sang bug-os nga suporta, kay diri ta makita ang ila gid potential,” Mr. Canong said.
Canong’s achievements include being named Grand Champion in the Instrumental Category during the Philippine International Performing Arts Festival (PIPAF) 2026 held at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center on May 2, 2026.
Beyond music, Canong has also shared his journey as an adoptee at events organized by the Regional Alternative Child Care Office (RACCO), promoting hope and a sense of belonging among others with similar experiences.
Canong’s accomplishments reflect his dedication to musical excellence and highlight the talent of Ilonggo artists on both the national and international stages. His success brings pride to the local and Centralian community.
