In response to the pressing issue of substance abuse among the youth in Barangay Iwa Macatol, Pototan, Iloilo, a proactive initiative has been undertaken by 3rd-year Social Work students of Central Philippine University, in collaboration with the Junior Social Work Association of the Philippines – CPU together with Prof. Sarex Dalida Dipol, Jr., Acting Director of Community Engagement and Service Learning Center (CESLC-CPU); and Dr. Laureen M. Manalo.

This initiative, titled “Droga ay Iwasan, Barkada ay Tulungan” Drug Awareness Campaign, aims to address the rising trend of youth involvement in substance abuse through a comprehensive outreach program.

The primary beneficiaries of this outreach program are the young residents of Barangay Iwa Macatol, Pototan. Recognizing the urgent need to curb the increasing number of youth delinquents involved in substance abuse, the program seeks to empower them with knowledge and support systems to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions regarding their physical and mental well-being. By fostering an open environment for dialogue and education, the campaign aims to instill a sense of responsibility and resilience among the youth.

In addition to partnering with esteemed government organizations such as the Philippine National Police of Pototan, Iloilo, in the presence of Police Master Sergent Raquel P. Cayton, who graciously contributed their expertise as resource speakers during the outreach program. The speech aimed to highlight the cause and effect that may happen to an individual who tries to take or use any kind of illegal drug. She advises individuals not to attempt to use such harmful medicines because they will change the way they live, lead to addiction, and, worst of all, lead to death. The initiative also involves engaging local barangay officials and SK officials for sustainable monitoring. Through their valuable insights and guidance, the outreach program was able to impart invaluable knowledge and empower the youth.

The “Droga ay Iwasan, Barkada ay Tulungan” Drug Awareness Campaign stands as a beacon of hope in Barangay Iwa Macatol, Pototan, Iloilo, illuminating the path towards a healthier and more resilient youth population. Through education, empowerment, and community collaboration, this outreach program strives to create a safer and more supportive environment where youth can thrive free from the shackles of substance abuse.
