In a remarkable display of academic excellence and research prowess, the Central Philippine University (CPU) Chemical Engineering Department has been bestowed with the prestigious “Best Paper” award at the 4th Local Governance Research Forum. This significant achievement unfolded during the event organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region VI on October 18, 2023, hosted at the District 21 Hotel.

The winning research paper, titled “Assessment of Food Safety and Hygiene Awareness and Practices among Food Vendors/Handlers in Iloilo City Public Markets,” was presented by Prof. Christsam Joy Jaspe-Santander, representing the CPU-ChE Department. The proponents were the following: Dr. Dahlia H. Pescos, Engr. Bernie C. Cangrejo, Engr. Sharon Rose G. Dumam-ag, Engr. Christsam Joy S. Jaspe-Santander, Engr. Victor John M. Magtulis and Engr. Sheila Mae B. Pingul-Ong. The research forum provided an ideal platform for sharing insights, knowledge, and critical analysis related to local governance and pertinent issues.

The research paper, a collective effort of the CPU Chemical Engineering Department, delved into the critical domain of food safety and hygiene. The study centered around the practices and awareness of food vendors and handlers operating within Iloilo City’s bustling public markets. The research aimed to shed light on the state of food safety in these markets, offering recommendations and insights to enhance hygiene practices and protect public health.

The recognition as the “Best Paper” underscores the dedication, diligence, and expertise of the CPU-ChE Department’s faculty and students. Their research not only contributes to the academic and intellectual wealth of the institution but also addresses a matter of vital importance to the local community.
