A spectacular array of fireworks were displayed during the Switching-on of Christmas Lights.

This year’s Christmas Lights at Central Philippine University were switched on in the evening of December 7, 2022 (Wednesday). Although it was exclusively held for the University’s Faculty, Staff and students, the spectacular lights display were watched by many people outside of the campus; the event was also covered live on CPU TV Channel and watched by Centralians worldwide.

Traditionally called the Festival of Lights, it’s quite different this year than the previous years, but the expectations and devotions were there. The White Gift Service, Induction of CPUAA Officers for AY 2023-2024 event were rolled into one. The program, held at the University Church, CPU started at 4:30 in the afternoon, and ended up with the fireworks display before seven in the evening.

University President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles in his Welcome Remarks emphasized the verse from John 3: 16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life ; ” he said that , “ It is our prayer that Jesus Christ may enter into ourselves.” He also explained that “We’re doing the white gift service differently from the previous years; in order not to gather goods which can shortly perish, and instead – raise funds which can be easily used in response to any calamity.”

The other speakers delivered their messages. CPUAAI President, Dr. Florentino P. Alerta who quoted 2 Corinthians 5:7 which says, “The Lord is with us even in the midst of crises”; recalled the experiences during the Covid pandemic. He assured that there will be hope in 2023 only if we focus on Him.” Dr. Elmer Q. Pedregosa, Chair, CPU Board of Trustees acknowledged the preparation and innovation of the program by the CPUAAI Festival of Lights Committee.
Hon. Julienne L. Baronda, Representative, Lone District of Iloilo appreciated the annual event in CPU and said that, “The Festival of Lights at Central has been a tradition, and a tourist attraction.” She added that “The lights not only give us joy and optimism, but they remind us of those who are the last, the least and the lost in our people.”

Hon. Jerry P. Treñas, Iloilo City Mayor acknowledged “The ever active CPU Alumni Association and the University for levelling up on our Christmas experience.” The City Mayor added that “CPU’s Festival of Lights is one of the most anticipated events in Iloilo – for its spectacular show of lights.” Iloilo City Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon said, “This event reminds us of Son of God, Jesus – our greatest gift from God. “ He considered it a gift also to his family, friends and community.

Engr. Rey L. Balogo, Chair, Festival of Lights at Central 2022, acknowledged the committee members, the administration, and in particular, “Mrs. Tina Hortelano, CPUAAI Liaison Officer for coordinating most of the works for the successful Festival of Lights 2022.”

The Lighting of the Christ Candle was done by Rev. Bernabe C. Pagara- Dean, College of Theology; the candle of Hope by Dr. Esther Rose A. Romarate- Vice President for Student affairs; the Candle of Peace by Dr. Florence P. Bogacia – VP for Finance and & Administration; The Candle of Joy by Dr. Romarate; and the Candle of Love by Dr. Robles.

John Bryan G. Carnaje rendered a song proclaiming the God of Light. The Congregational Singing of Shine Jesus! Shine! followed. Pastor Neva Grace L. Fabila led the Prayer of Adoration. Rev. Cris Amorsolo Sian, the Senior Pastor of the University Church, delivered the reflection that focused on the greatest gift of God, our salvation in Jesus Christ.

The UC Upstream Trio also rendered a Musical Offering with the song “Good, Good Father” with “Love Lifted Me.” It was followed by the gathering of White Gift Offerings. Rev. Lunasco led in the prayer of Dedication for the White Gifts.

Dr. Robles was the Inducting Officer for the Induction of CPU-AAI Officers. The Prayer of Dedication of CPUAAI Officers was led by Rev. Cris Amorsolo V. Sian, Senior Pastor, University Church. A Declaration from the Scriptures was read by the congregation from the book of Isaiah 42.5-7; 60.19-20. The Song of Commitment “Song for the Nations” was followed by the Closing Prayer and Benediction by Rev. Roger T. Quimpo.

Dr. Elmer Pedregosa, Dr. Teodoro Robles, Dr. Florentino, Alerta, Engr. Rey Balogo and CPUR President Danz Rasheed Reynald Quimba officially switched on the Christmas Lights at the porch of the University Church. It was then followed by a spectacular display of fireworks, and then the Christmas Jam by the CPU Republic at the field.
