The CPU Website placed 1st in uniRank’s 2020 Western Visayas Ranking and League Tables as February 2020. The University also placed 24th in the Top 200 overall country ranking, a significant jump from last year’s ranking which was No. 33. Only one educational institution from Region VI entered the Top 30. The next school from the Western Visayas is the University of the Philippines-Visayas which is rank No. 40.

In uniRank’s latest regional ranking, CPU bested the University of the Philippines-Visayas and the University of St. La Salle, which placed second and third respectively.

According to its website (https://www.4icu.org/about/index.htm#ranking): The aim of the uniRank University RankingTM is to provide an approximate global ranking of world universities and colleges based upon their web presence and popularity in terms of estimated traffic, trust/authority, and quality link popularity. This is especially intended to help international students and academic staff to understand how popular a specific higher education institution is in a foreign country.

CPU’s ranking is credited to the internet activity of its students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Since the re-launch of the Centralian Link an online publication of the University in 2016, the university website has been receiving a lot of traffic due to site visits, inquiries, and shares, mostly from alumni and foreign students who wish to study in CPU. Over the years, traffic on the CPU website as well as in its Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts, has increased four times.

uniRank (formerly 4icu.org  or 4 International Colleges & Universities) is an international higher education directory, reviewing accredited universities and colleges in the world. uniRank includes 12,358 colleges and universities, ranked by web popularity, in 200 countries.

The CPU website is managed by Webmaster Mark Clemens Ortaliz under the Office of Communications.

Eric Cordevilla Otayde (2nd from left) was elected President of CPU PSAA last 2015.

The moment he came back to his beloved Alma Mater, Eric Cordevilla Otayde (Political Science Batch ’84) called on his former classmates and Pol Sci graduates of CPU to start up a strong special alumni organization. The Political Science Alumni Association (PSAA) was born with Otayde as its first elected president.

While teaching in the College of Arts and Sciences, he accepted leadership positions. He is a seasoned leader from Antique. His previous positions in private and government institutions include: as Municipal Councilor of Sibalom Antique, Board Member, Provincial Administrator and Public Information of Antique; Board of Regents, University of Antique.

He was Chairman of the Provincial Government Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative and Executive President of Antique Lions Club.

Otayde believes in positive action and in “moving on when there is a storm.” He said, “I need to emphasize that God provides us the opportunity and it is on us to take on the responsibility.”
He shares this quote from John Quincy Adams, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

CPU held its Christ Emphasis Week Celebrations from February 10, 17-21, 2020 in various venues inside the university. The theme for this year’s CEW, “Life Hacks” is based on John 1:4 (“The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.”) and John 1:10 (He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him.”) The theme for this year focuses on going back to the basic hacks of life through God’s Word and finding the meaning of life in Christ.

Mr. Francis Lara Ho, Professor Rea Angelica Villeza, Pastor Norman Lao and Pastor Lloyd Basco were the speakers for the college and senior high school convocations. While the speakers for the kindergarten department, elementary department, and senior high school department are Pastor Chobelle Ferrer Pastor Neva Ruth Pendon and Professor Harrace Gem Caver, respectively.

PSAA Officers during a dinner meeting in Iloilo City before the pandemic.

As we look forward to new leaders in the government in 2022, the CPU Political Science Alumni Association looks back to six years ago when it inducted its first set of officers in a grand Alumni Reunion in 2015 at the CPU Educational Media Center Conference Hall. Dr. Teodoro C. Robles was the Guest Speaker and Inducting Officer.

The elected President was Eric C. Otayde with VP for External Affairs and VP for Administration Atty. Gualberto V. Cataluña and Cyrus A. Natividad, respectively; Secretary Alma S. Diaresco, Treasurer Jovy S. Espalabra, Asst. Treasurer Juvelyn T. Clementir; Business Manager Reynaldo Gonzales, PIO Nelson Jutare, Sr., Muse Ruby Tupas and Legal Advisers: Atty. Joshua C. Alim and Atty. Immanuel Sodusta.

Before the program started, the alumni enjoyed sharing their experiences with one another for the last 32 years. They then gathered and launched the PSAA – special CPU alumni chapter. By this time, everyone present has their own established career, family, and business. The group have four lawyers who were eventually voted as officers and legal advisers of the group.

Some PSAA members have served their localities, established businesses, taught in schools and some became members of the press. Definitely, PSAA Alumni are proud of being Centralians wherever they are. The Central Spirit continues to bind them to Central.

During the pandemic, the group is virtually connected and started the celebrations since September 25 this year. The Group Chat is full of stories and possible plans.

The PSAA celebrates its 6th year with gratefulness to God and to its beloved Central Philippine University.

An old photo of the entrance of Central Philippine College.

On October 1, 2021, Central Philippine University officially celebrated its 116 years of existence. All Centralians can remember that CPU started as Jaro Industrial School on October 1, 1905, with Rev. William O. Valentine as its first Principal.

There is one historical trivia that we oftentimes miss in the history of CPU. Jaro Industrial School was not renamed to Central Philippine College. It was first renamed as Central Philippine School in 1923. For 1 year, we were called as CenPhiCol in old historical records would attest. It was then in 1924 when we became Central Philippine College.

There is also another date that we sometimes forget to celebrate. It is April 1, 1953. Why is that date significant? It was on April 1, 1953 when the Department of Education approved our request for university status. The Administration officials have not known the approval during that time. There was no text messaging or social media during that time yet. The communication from the government was hand-carried and it arrived on time for the commencement exercises on April 8, 1953.

The letter said, “By virtue of the authority vested in me by the Department of Education, Republic of the Philippines, I, Cecilio Putong, Secretary of Education, do hereby grant to Central Philippine College of Iloilo City, the authority to use the name Central Philippine University, effective April 1, 1953.” We can just imagine the celebration of Centralians during the graduation exercises.

On August 1, 1953, during its regular meeting, the Board of Trustees through a formal motion and duly seconded, changed the name to Central Philippine University.

So this year marks the 68th year that Central Philippine College became Central Philippine University and the 116th year since Jaro Industrial School. To God be the glory!

The objectives of this LIS Research Symposium are to impart knowledge and intellectual research content that could help develop or test theories on library and information science or related disciplines; to develop presentation skills and research confidence of LIS students; to provide a forum to discuss methodologies and trends in LIS research; and provide insights into the development of students’ papers.

The research presenters were BLIS and MLIS students and alumni members who recently graduated. The program was officially opened by Dr. Rowena M. Libo-on, Dean, School of Graduate Studies who had graciously encouraged the LIS students to embrace the culture of research and assured that it was just the beginning of conducting such activity for enhancing the research capacity of our LIS students in the University.

CPUAA Northern California chapter members during the motorcade for the Alumni Grand Homecoming 2020.

Centralians in Mass Media (CMM) Alumni Association conducted interviews with visiting Centralians during the Grand Alumni Homecoming 2020. Among the interviewees were former Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary and former Central Philippine University Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Perfecto Yasay, Jr (CPU Political Science -1967).

He is a distinguished CPU alumnus and served as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, during the Estrada administration. The diplomatic Centralian who had spent many years in public service intelligently responded to questions from members of the Centralian Media at the CPU Alumni Office – with CMM President Rufino ‘Pinoy’ Gonzales, Cyrus Natividad, and Jason Pagunsan. He was also asked questions about his family, his personal opinions on urgent matters of concern to the state and society; including his role in government and foreign relations.

CPUAA College of Nursing alumna Lucia Suchikul.

About being a Centralian, Yasay reiterated his pride and said that “Central Spirit is the power within oneself that enables me to connect with anyone in any situation, particularly for the love and support of Central Philippine University and its Alumni.” He added that “CPU is like a Central Processing Unit that lets us do great things for God and the Institution.”

Forty Centralians of Northern California Alumni Chapter led by its President, Cathy Leyble Kriewall, and members took time to express their admiration for Central Philippine University. In an interview at the Rose Memorial Auditorium, where they registered on Wednesday, February 5, Kriewall observed how CPU developed through the years. “These new buildings are impressive, “noting that these were mostly built by gift (donations) from the alumni.

Kriewall was grateful to CPU for her high school education. “I think we had an excellent educational system in CPU, and up to now CPU is one of the best schools in the Philippines.”

Lucia Suchikul, one of the members who talked about values said, “What I value most from Central is the Christian belief which guided us through our journey and progress, and still presently giving most of us a lot of blessings as we live in the U.S.”

The Northern California Alumni Chapter includes several batches of alumni who graduated from Central Philippine University. The Chapter whose members are Centralian alumni are residents of the area within Northern California.

An interview was also made with Mrs. Derla Guzon Erwin, Assistant Life Science Professor at Central Philippine University from 1959 to 1972. She was at the CPU Grand Alumni Homecoming 2020 with members of the CPU Alumni Association of Texas whom she said has adopted her. On the other hand the Agriculture Retirees Urban Gardeners Association (ARUGA) also adopted her.

She was a guest at CPUTV’s  Looking Forward with CPU Outstanding Alumnus Dr. Manny Palada, who was one of her students in Biology and Zoology in CPU. Her two other prominent students at that time, according to her were Perfecto ‘Jun’ Yasay, Jr. and Fluellen Ortigas who both excelled in leadership. She worked during the administration of Dr. Larsen and Dr. Nelson in CPU.

Erwin proceeded to the U.S. in 1973 and taught at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Later, she became Director of the Oklahoma Junior College, Medical Assistance Program. Now in her 70’s, Erwin speaks of gratefulness and admiration of Central Philippine University “where Christ is the center of the Academe.”

Mr. Cyrus Natividad with Former Chairman of the CPU Board of Trustees Atty. Perfecto Yasay.

She treasured the knowledge and values she received from the American administrators during her time in CPU, and that “the Central Spirit in her own perception, is a strong binder of Centralians with every Centralian.”

Furthermore she said that” my coming back to CPU was not only to attend the Grand Alumni Homecoming but also to look into some prospective activity where I can be of help for the glory of God.” She added that “I shall look forward to greater developments of Central Philippine University as I know that Centralian Alumni will generously support their Alma Mater.” Derla Guzon Erwin was once a leader of the CPU Gospel Team.
