CPU takes part in the Greg Secker Foundation project for victims of Typhoon Yolanda

Folks in a community in Lemery, one of the towns in the part northern part of the Iloilo province, received 100 houses from Greg Secker Foundation four years after typhoon Yolanda lashed the province. Greg Secker Foundation was founded by Greg Secker, an English philanthropist. Secker officially turned over the houses on January 5, 2018 at Sitio Malag-it in Brgy. Capiñahan, Lemery. The housing project is named the Greg Secker Foundation Village.
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles and his wife Ma’am Angel; CPU Outreach Director, Prof. Levi O. De Los Santos, Jr.; Dean College of Education, Dr. Merle Junsay; CPU APROTECH Coordinator, Engr. Aries Rhoda Romallosa; and faculty members Dr. Myrna Luceño and Prof. Bernadine Baliguat were present at the Opening and Turning Over Ceremony. The event marked the start of a new community in Lemery.
According to DR June I. Sanico, Philippine Operations Manager of the Greg Secker Foundation, “The beneficiaries will receive more than a home. The second phase of the project includes help to provide education for both children and adults, and support from benefactors worldwide. This will help create a thriving and industrious community.”

The partnership of Central Philippine University with the Lemery housing project started in 2016 when Mrs. Rose Sanico, a CPU College of Education alumna and employee of the Greg Secker Foundation in London approached the Community Engagement and Service-Learning Center for Assistance.
As a partner in the project, CPU conducted social preparations for the project through its Social Work Department. The College of Engineering also extended technical assistance during the construction. It conducted a construction management seminar for the local foremen and carpenters and a product labeling seminar for food processing to the beneficiaries. The latter was held by the CPU Packaging Engineering. The College of Education, meanwhile, conducted tutorial instructions for the elementary pupils of the beneficiaries.
A number of dignitaries, celebrities-including former Miss Earth Angela Ong, VIPs, and international figures attended the turning-over ceremony.
Internationally known storyteller presented active learning process to CPU Kindergarten

Just a day after his lecture-workshop on Teaching English to Young Learners at the CPU Educational Media Center, Prof. Marco Brazil generously spent time with the kindergarten school pupils of the University Kindergarten on Monday January 8, 2018. He modeled how students can learn and appreciate a topic better through active story telling. Brazil is a Filipino child psychologist who has been teaching children in Japan for the past 20 years. Principal Hannah C. Siosan brought the development communication master to CPU Kindergarten School in her desire to introduce an active learning pattern of story-telling to the children.
As a well-experienced trainer and teacher all over Asia, Brazil gathered the children with their teachers in one room. The medium included a slide presentation of pictures and characters from storybooks he himself authored: The Monkey and the Turtle, The Rabbit and the Turtle, and The Hardworking Ant. He emphasized the story by acting out the scenes on each page. He involved the children by asking them to dance and sing children’s songs for the slide story. The children who have not encountered this kind of story-telling and learning process before, responded positively and enthusiastically. Siosan commented that “the integration of the new learning process in our medium of instruction is very important.”
Brazil shared that, for him, “teaching children is more glorious than teaching adults because it (education) is the foundation and bridge of the young mind to bigger universal knowledge that can never be learned without the child knowing the basic ideas in younger years.”
Brazil is a popular and regular presenter of Oxford University Press and MacMillan Education Asia children’s books. He is internationally known as the Asia King of Games.
1st Dinagyang Blood Olympics opens in CPU
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, encouraged Centralians and partner-organizations to support the advocacies of the Philippine Red Cross.
With the aim of encouraging more volunteers to donate their blood, the Philippine Red Cross Regional Office in partnership with the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation will be holding the Dinagyang Blood Olympics on selected dates this January 2018 at participating schools and universities. The opening program of the said activity was held at CPU Alumni Promenade Concert Park on January 10, 2018.
For the welcome message, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President, thanked the Iloilo City Government and the Philippine Red Cross for holding activities that promote the spirit of volunteerism, “We hope that events like this will continue as long as there is a need to help others who need blood donations. I thank the Iloilo City Government, the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, the Philippine Red Cross and all its partners for holding this kind of activity.”
Atty. Dominador C. Co., Executive Assistant to the Mayor, expressed the city’s thanks to the partner-agencies and universities for their support and commitment to the said activity.

Co, Executive Assistant to the Mayor, expressed the city government’s gratitude to the partner-universities for their support and commitment to the said activity, “This noble endeavor is saving the welfare, well-being, and lives through the spirit of volunteerism. Volunteerism is one basic value we all share—giving our time and talent for the betterment of all. It is a culture that promotes community service.”
Dr. Mae Ann Sta. Lucia, Regional Blood Program Coordinator, Department of Health Region VI, on behalf of Dr. Marlyn Concovar, highlighted the role of youth in keeping the spirit of volunteerism alive, “We encourage the youth to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism, especially to participate in our blood drives. The spirit of volunteerism is very much alive in the provinces of Panay.”
CPU Prime Minister Charles Arthel Rey, in his message, encouraged his fellow youth to develop a heart for community service and empathy, “It is a great honor that the opening of the1st Dinagyang Blood Olympics was held here in our university. We should have a heart of empathy and volunteerism for our fellowman by supporting and promoting causes like this.”

Dr. Paul Francia, Chairman, Blood Committee Philippine Red Cross-Iloilo, representative of Mr. Ramon Cua Locsin, President, Iloilo DinagyangFoundation, officially opened the 1st Dinagyang Blood Olympics.
The program began with a prayer, led by CPU Vice President for Student Affair, Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico. The singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the CPU Hymn followed, both conducted by the Director, CPU Cultural Affairs, Ms. Crista Huyong with the CPU Symphonic Band conducted by Mr. Asuncion O. Bautista.
The blood drive at Central Philippine University will be on January 22, 2018 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Also part of the Dinagyang festivities is a special screening of the entries for the short film making contest. The screening will be at Cinematheque Iloilo on January 23, 2018.
CPU BSN Batch 1978 holds International Balik-Turo Program on Global Trends in Nursing

With the aim of producing globally competitive nurses, the Central Philippine University Bachelor of Science in Nursing Batch 1978 held the International Balik-Turo Program on Global Trends in Nursing at the AudioVisual Room, Loreto D. Tupaz Building on January 11, 2017.
Susie Jennings, guest speaker and CPU a BSN Class 1978 alumna was introduced by Ma. Lourdes Sampiano, Clinical Coordinator. Jennings is the founder and president of Operation Care International (OCI), established in 1993. OCI is a ministry-based foundation dedicated to caring for the homeless in Dallas, Texas and impoverished children around the world. OCI’s goal is to connect impoverished children and the homeless to Jesus Christ by providing for their physical needs through God’s provisions both at home and abroad and to facilitate worldwide opportunities to experience the love of Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life. Her commitment and dedication in serving God and the community has tagged her as the “The Blanket Lady” after she gave away blankets to the homeless in the freezing cold of November 1993.

In her lecture, Jennings emphasized the importance of being aware of the global trends in nursing. She interposed that the challenges can be met with preparedness and cognizance as a student, before one enters professional practice.
She also inspired the participants by encouraging them to pursue nursing not only as a profession but as a God-given ministry to serve others and to glorify God. Her testimony has uplifted the Centralian alumni community here and abroad through her heart for community service.
In his opening remarks, Atty. Salex E. Alibogha, Acting Dean of the CPU College of Nursing thanked the batch for hosting the seminar-forum and for their continued commitment and support to the college. He also highlighted the importance of holding seminar-forums like this to orient Centralian nursing students about the global trends in nursing which will be crucial for their practice later on.
The general objective of the International Balik-Turo Program is to conduct an academic exchange to update and enrich the perspective of Centralian nurses on international health care issues. Its specific objectives include discussing health care issues confronting the world, explicating the roles of nurses in global health care issues confronting patient care, and encouraging aspiring nurses to express their own perspectives on international health care issues affecting the nursing profession.
The CPU BSN Batch 1978 will also be spearheading this year’s 2nd Natividad C. Caipang Memorial Lecture. The final date will be announced soon.
National Music Festival 2018 held at CPU Rose Memorial Auditorium
The Rose Memorial Auditorium has been a witness of many talents throughout the years.
The former Ilonggo Music Festival, an original project of Bombo Radyo Iloilo, goes national, with the recent Music Festival of Bombo Radyo Philippines held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium last Saturday, January 6 at 6:30 in the evening.
Due to insistent public demand from several cities at Bombo stations, Bombo Radyo Philippines decided to include provincial songwriters and singers to join in the national finals of the singing competition. It has chosen Rose Memorial Auditorium at Central Philippine University to be the venue.
The music festival is only among several national and local events and concerts that have been held at the CPU Rose Memorial Auditorium. Big concert events of popular music groups like the world famous Platters, Cascades, John Ford Coley and Filipino performers like Zsa Zsa Padilla were held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium. Beauty pageants like Miss Earth and local Miss Dinagyang Beauty pageants have also been organized at the Auditorium. Several summits like agriculture, business and governance, organizations, religious and community events have also taken place here.
Bridging the World through Link
Some Weekly Centralian Link issues.
The Weekly Centralian Link, the official weekly publication of Central Philippine University Office of Communications is described as “a window to the world,” “everyone’s source of information from the campus,” “what every Centralian should read,” and the like. A lot of ideas, passion, hard work, and commitment go into publishing one Centralian Link issue every week.
With the support of the university President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, the Office of Communications raised the mast to sail on a unified writing endeavor. The decision to push one publication per week was inspired by EXCEL (Exemplary Christian Education for Life)—to produce an excellent quality newsletter, to be supported and cherished by the university faculty and staff, CPU alumni, and friends. The struggle to sustain and maintain a timely newsletter was likewise driven by the Central Spirit. Its aim is to provide Centralians a new look at the news and information “from the campus to the world!”
On its second year (and after 50 issues), The Weekly Centralian Link promises to bring out the best of campus news, events, and features. The publication also showcases the developments of the University and other future projects with other institutions and linkages. Apart from the printed edition for distribution in the campus, the publication is also sent to individual subscribers via email, social media, and can be accessed through the official CPU website, www.cpu.edu.ph.
