God’s Grace Program continues to embody CPU’s mission of faith, service, and compassion by providing hope, nourishment, and support to deserving work students as they pursue their dreams despite financial challenges.

There’s nothing remarkable about lunch to some students, for others, it is a tough dilemma of choosing a meal or saving what little money they have for transportation, school requirements, or tuition. Behind every skipped meal is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and hope.

This condition at Central Philippine University gave rise to the ministry of God’s Grace Program. For over two decades now, it has been touching many lives not just with food but most of all, as a tangible expression of the University’s Christian calling- faith, service, and compassion. With the generous contributions of alumni, the University Church, and faithful benefactors, the program has enabled hundreds of deserving work students to continue pursuing their education despite overwhelming financial challenges.

Tracing its roots to the first semester of 2002, reports reached the Office of the Vice President for Administration that several work students regularly went without lunch because they simply could not afford to have one. Some survived the day with only a piece of candy and a glass of water, while compassionate faculty and staff quietly shared portions of their own meals. Moved by these circumstances, former Vice President Walden S. Rio brought the concern to former University President Dr. Juanito Acanto, who immediately approved an initial allocation of ₱148,000 to provide meal assistance to the University’s most financially challenged work students. From then on, the God’s Grace Program was created, a fitting name that reflects God’s love expressed through generous hearts.

Initially, qualified work students were provided food on a daily rate of ₱25 or its equivalent lunch serving, with beneficiaries carefully identified according to their level of need. As the ministry grew, the Central Philippine University Church Council, together with Senior Minister Rev. Melvin Mangana, assumed the responsibility of overseeing the program during School Year 2003–2004. This partnership strengthened the program’s spiritual foundation and affirmed that serving students is also a way of serving Christ.

The ministry continued to expand. In 2009, an Endowment Fund was established to provide monthly lodging assistance to work students with the greatest financial need, recognizing that many struggled not only with hunger but also with finding safe and affordable accommodations. Overtime, with the persistent kindness of our alumni and members of the University Church, this program blossomed into something so much more. Having experienced similar circumstances, they understand how one act of kindness can change the course of a student’s life. Every contribution has become more than financial assistance, it has become an investment in hope, education, and a brighter future.

Today, God’s Grace Program remains committed to caring for students holistically by nurturing their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Every first Saturday of the month, recipients gather for the God’s Grace Prayer Breakfast, where they join committee members and the University Church Board of Deacons for worship, devotion, fellowship, and prayer. Students share their struggles, aspirations, and testimonies in small groups, finding encouragement in a community that reminds them they are not alone. These gatherings reinforce the program’s belief that while meals nourish the body, faith, prayer, and genuine relationships fortify the heart and spirit.

After a series of careful screenings, 89 deserving work students qualified as recipients of the program for the First Semester of School Year 2026–2027. The recipients, all bona fide members of the CPU Work Student Study Program, receive a meal subsidy of ₱375 weekly, redeemable exclusively at the University Dining Hall. They also actively participate in Saturday devotionals and spiritual formation activities that encourage personal growth alongside academic success.

Behind every meal subsidy is a student carrying burdens far greater than most people realize. A recent socioeconomic assessment revealed that the majority of beneficiaries come from households earning only ₱10,000 to ₱20,000 monthly. Many are children of farmers, laborers, drivers, vendors, domestic helpers, construction workers, security guards, or parents with unstable or seasonal sources of income. Others come from single-parent families, have lost one or both parents, or live with relatives or guardians while pursuing their studies. Some of them are first-born who must support their own family while managing the studies and work in the campus.

Poverty affects nearly every aspect of the students’ lives. They struggle to pay tuition, purchase school supplies, cover transportation costs, and secure enough money for daily meals. Some help shoulder family debts or medical expenses, while others have endured parental unemployment, illness, death, natural disasters, or other life-changing challenges. Yet despite these hardships, they continue to persevere with remarkable determination, driven by dreams of graduating, passing licensure examinations, securing stable employment, supporting their families, and one day giving back to the University that believed in them.

For these students, God’s Grace Program is far more than financial assistance. It is the assurance that someone believes in their potential. It is the relief of attending class without the burden of hunger. It is the opportunity to focus on learning rather than worrying about where the next meal will come from. More importantly, it restores dignity, strengthens faith, and reminds students that God’s provision often comes through the kindness of others.

As the God’s Grace Program continues its mission, the need is overwhelming. Behind every student receiving assistance are many others who continue to face poverty and uncertainty. Yet the ministry also continues to grow because of generous individuals who believe that no deserving student should be denied an education because of financial hardship.

Every meal served tells a story of compassion. With each prayer that is uttered, a hurting heart is given encouragement. Every gift, whether through a donation, sponsorship, endowment, or prayer, becomes a lasting investment in a student’s future. Together, we can ensure that no deserving work student comes to work and class without having a meal. Together, we can continue transforming lives, restoring hope, and becoming instruments of God’s grace, one student, one meal, and one dream at a time.
