Congratulations to Central Philippine University for officially securing trademark registration for its university logo from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), another meaningful milestone in protecting the institution’s identity, legacy, and commitment to excellence and innovation.
Central Philippine University (CPU) has achieved another major institutional milestone after its official university logo was granted trademark registration by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) on April 30, 2026, granting the university exclusive trademark protection for a period of ten (10) years, valid until April 30, 2036, and renewable in accordance with the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (Republic Act No. 8293).
The registration formally recognizes the CPU logo as a protected intellectual property asset, granting the university exclusive rights over its official visual identity and strengthening its institutional branding, academic integrity, and commercialization initiatives.
For decades, the CPU logo has symbolized the university’s commitment to Scientia et Fides—knowledge and faith—and has served as an enduring representation of the institution’s legacy of academic excellence, Christian formation, research, innovation, and community engagement. With its official trademark registration, the university now gains stronger legal protection against unauthorized use, imitation, reproduction, and unauthorized commercial use of its institutional mark.
University officials described the development as a significant step in reinforcing CPU’s commitment to intellectual property governance and institutional identity protection in an increasingly competitive and innovation-driven educational landscape.
The trademark registration provides important advantages for both academic and business-related functions of the university. In the academic sphere, the registration helps ensure the proper and authorized use of the university logo in official publications, research outputs, conferences, academic certifications, instructional materials, extension programs, and institutional partnerships. It also safeguards the integrity and authenticity of university-issued materials and official representations.
Beyond academic use, the trademark protection also strengthens CPU’s position in innovation, technology transfer, and commercialization initiatives. As universities continue to expand their role in research utilization, startup development, and industry collaboration, the CPU logo now stands as a legally protected institutional brand that may be utilized in official merchandise, innovation showcases, technology-based initiatives, university services, and partnership engagements under authorized arrangements.
The registration also provides the university with stronger legal remedies against infringement and misuse. Under Philippine Intellectual Property Law, trademark registration grants the owner exclusive rights to use the mark and enforce protections against unauthorized parties that may attempt to use the logo in misleading or fraudulent activities.
The milestone further reflects CPU’s growing emphasis on intellectual property awareness and institutional innovation, particularly through initiatives led by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (OVPRDE) and its support units: the University Research Center, Community Engagement and Service-Learning Center, Research Ethics and Review Board, CPUGAD Technology Business Incubator, and the Innovation and Technology Support Office.
