Central Philippine University (CPU) continues to strengthen its commitment to research commercialization and intellectual property protection as its Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) focal person, Ms. Ligaya Villarias-Caniel, attended a specialized national training program held here from June 15 to 18, 2026.

The four-day intensive training, titled “Foundation Course on Intellectual Property (IP) and Introduction to New Product Development,” was organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and hosted at the IPOPHL Multipurpose Hall in Taguig City.

Elevating Academic Innovation to Market Success

The national training gathered selected ITSO personnel and technology transfer officers from various Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), and other organizations across the country. The program was specifically designed to arm these institutions with the tools needed to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial viability.

Key highlights of the four-day event included:

  • Deep Dive into IP Assets: Comprehensive sessions on protecting patents, utility models, industrial designs, trademarks, and copyrights.
  • The WIPO Toolkit: Practical frameworks and resources from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to help universities systematically evaluate institutional innovations.
  • New Product Development (NPD): Advanced strategies on market-driven research, exploring product lifecycles, and aligning laboratory outputs with actual industry demands.

Driving Impact for Central Philippine University

As the CPU ITSO focal person, Ms. Villarias-Caniel’s participation marks a significant step forward for the university’s research and development ecosystem. The insights gained from the IPOPHL training are expected to heavily influence how CPU manages and leverages its intellectual capital moving forward.

With the completion of this foundational course, the CPU ITSO is uniquely positioned to expand its campus services, which include patent searching, IP audits, and supporting local inventors as they navigate the commercialization landscape. This ensures that research generated within CPU doesn’t just remain on library shelves but moves forward to create a tangible societal and economic impact.
