CPU representatives, WVSU participants, and IPOPHL resource speakers pose for a group photo during the WVSU Advanced IP Summer Bootcamp 2026, a four-day training-workshop focused on intellectual property protection and technology development.
On July 13-16, 2026, representatives from Central Philippine University (CPU) participated in the WVSU Advanced IP Summer Bootcamp 2026: Transforming Research into Patents, a four-day intensive training-workshop that concluded at the 3rd Floor of the BINHI TBI Building, West Visayas State University (WVSU) Main Campus.
Representing CPU were Ms. Ligaya Villarias-Caniel, CPU ITSO Officer, together with College of Hospitality Management faculty members Dr. Armando Hisuan, Jr. and Dr. Myrna T. Luceño. The training gathered participants from WVSU and CPU to strengthen their competencies in intellectual property (IP) protection and equip researchers with the knowledge and skills needed to transform research outputs into patents, utility models, industrial designs, and other protectable technologies.
Organized by WVSU through its Knowledge, Technology Transfer and Business Development Center (KTTBDC) and Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO), the Bootcamp featured a series of lectures, workshops, and mentoring sessions focused on patent searching, invention spotting, drafting IP-related documents, and industrial design applications.
Throughout the Bootcamp, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) resource speakers Engr. Wilfredo “Fred” Calaguan, Division Chief and IPR Specialist V of the Documentation, Information, and Technology Transfer Bureau, and Mr. Dindo Dumali, IPR Specialist IV of the same bureau, provided coaching and consultation sessions. They assisted participants in reviewing research outputs, identifying protectable features, refining invention disclosures, and improving draft claims and related documents to help prepare technologies for possible IP filing.
Participants also took part in a drafting workshop, where they further refined their claims, specifications, drawings, and supporting documents under the guidance of the IPOPHL speakers, ITSO technical experts, and facilitators. The workshop emphasized the importance of clarity, completeness, and technical accuracy in preparing intellectual property applications.
The activity concluded with a closing and awarding ceremony recognizing the participants’ active engagement and commitment throughout the four-day program.
Through its participation in the Bootcamp, CPU reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research, innovation, and intellectual property development while strengthening collaborations that support the protection, commercialization, and utilization of research outputs for societal benefit.
