With the aim to improve the communication skills of fellow Bachelor of Science in Social Work students in Central Philippine University, the third-year students of the program organized the seminar titled “Speak with Purpose: Building Confidence to Make an Impact,” held at the Senior High School Building on April 13, 2026.
The group led by Karen Lerado invited Atty. Marc Lovel C. Bedona, CPA, JD as resource speaker. Beginning with a special pakulo for their participants, the organizing committee collaborated with Thy Crafty Momma to give souvenir pouches to the attendees of the event.
The seminar began with an opening prayer, singing of the Philippine National Anthem and CPU Hymn, led by Josh Freya May Obe. Event Lead Lerado then delivered the opening remarks to formally open the program. Bea Anjielee P. Baltazar shared the objectives of the initiative and outlined the goals of the seminar. To add to the engaging event, Lyra Patricia G. Sarinas, as the game master, initiated an icebreaker activity to establish a comfortable and interactive space for everyone.

Serving as the master of ceremonies, Carmi Beatrice G. Reyes welcomed the guest speaker, in which the participants learned a lot from. Confidence was emphasized during the talk given by Atty. Bedona–its importance and relevance to the Social Work program. Further discussing the main topic, the guest speaker spoke of essential traits of an effective public speaker. Practical strategies to exhibit clarity, empathy, active listening, cultural sensitivity, and ethical practice were demonstrated in the event. An open forum followed after a series of engaging segments.
Sharing insights on the discussions shared during the seminar, attendee Pam Layog shared that the lessons tackled shall serve as precursors for the future, further emphasizing that “the focal point of public speaking in social work is the ability to communicate with clarity and confidence. It helps establish credibility and professionalism when dealing with clients, groups, or communities.”
After the completion of the seminar, Event Lead Karen Lerado shared that the event “was a fulfilling and successful initiative. The seminar not only enhanced the participants’ communication skills but also inspired them to become confident speakers and compassionate advocates in their future social work practice. It was a meaningful experience that reinforced our shared commitment to empowering future social workers to speak with clarity, confidence, and purpose.”
The event is one of six seminar series in compliance to their “Seminar on Current Trends” subject.
