“Gender Equality” – Seeds of Faith – July 8, 2024

As we continue our 17-part Seeds of Faith series focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, proudly supported by Central Philippine University, today we turn our attention to the sixth goal: Gender Equality. Our guiding scripture is Galatians 3:28, which says, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

First, there is equality in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:28 is a powerful declaration of the fundamental equality of all people in Christ. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that in the body of Christ, distinctions based on ethnicity, social status, and gender are abolished. We are all one in Christ Jesus. This verse underscores the biblical truth that men and women are equal in value and dignity before God.

As Christians, we are called to reflect this truth in our attitudes and actions. Gender equality is not just a social or political issue; it is a spiritual mandate. By promoting gender equality, we honor the image of God in every individual and affirm the worth and potential of both men and women. In doing so, we follow Christ’s example of valuing and uplifting all people.

Second, be part in breaking down barriers and stereotypes.

The SDG of Gender Equality aims to achieve gender equality. This goal challenges us to address and dismantle the barriers and stereotypes that perpetuate discrimination and inequality. In many parts of the world, women and girls face systemic obstacles that hinder their access to education, employment, healthcare, and leadership opportunities.

Central Philippine University, by supporting gender equality, plays a vital role in creating a more inclusive and just society. Our schools should advocate for equal opportunities, challenge discriminatory practices, and foster an environment where everyone can thrive. By breaking down these barriers, we enable individuals to fulfill their God-given potential and contribute to the flourishing of our communities.

Third, the Church has a role in promoting gender equality.

The church has a significant role in promoting and supporting gender equality. Historically, the church has been both a source of empowerment and, at times, a place of restriction for women. It is crucial that we align our practices with the biblical teaching of equality in Christ, ensuring that women are given equal opportunities to serve, lead, and participate in all aspects of church life.

We can start by examining our own attitudes and practices, promoting inclusivity in our ministries, and supporting initiatives that advance gender equality. Encouraging the education and empowerment of women and girls within our congregation and community can have a profound impact. By doing so, we not only live out the gospel message of equality but also strengthen the body of Christ.

As we reflect on Galatians 3:28 and the goal of Gender Equality, let us commit ourselves to promoting and supporting equality in every sphere of life. Let us recognize the inherent worth and dignity of every person, break down barriers and stereotypes, and actively work towards a more just and inclusive world.

May God bless us all!

Sincerely,
