On August 30, 2023, Central Philippine University (CPU) mourned the passing of Dr. Juanito Maca Acanto, Sr., its esteemed third Filipino President. A man fondly referred to as “Tay Juaning,” Dr. Acanto left behind a remarkable legacy that will forever be etched in the history of the university and the hearts of its community.

The University Church became a place of daily vigil services, where students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gathered to pay their respects and honor the life of Dr. Acanto.

The impact of Dr. Acanto’s presidency is vividly chronicled in the book “The Story of Juanito M. Acanto, the Centennial President of Central Philippine University,” edited by Francis Neil G. Jalando-on and published by CPU in 2022. The book stands as a testament to the many contributions and achievements of this visionary leader.

During a special vigil service sponsored by the CPU Corporation, CPU Board of Trustees, and CPU Alumni Association, Inc., heartfelt tributes were paid to Dr. Acanto. Among those who shared their memories and appreciation were Atty. Peter Irving C. Corvera, Chairman of the CPU Board of Trustees; Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President; Atty. Jeremy V. Bionat, President of CPU Alumni Association, Inc.; and Engr. Aurora Alerta-Lim, the former Vice President for Operations during Dr. Acanto’s tenure.

Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, in his reflection, summarized the key milestones achieved during Dr. Acanto’s presidency:

1. Vision and Mission: It was under Dr. Acanto’s visionary leadership that CPU’s Vision and Mission were formally penned, giving direction and purpose to the university’s journey. Previously, there had been only a preamble, but Dr. Acanto recognized the need to articulate a clear and inspiring path for CPU’s future – the result being the cherished motto of EXCEL, which stands for Exemplary Christian Education for Life.

2. Core Values: Dr. Acanto ensured that the Core Values of CPU – Faith, Character, Justice, Stewardship, and Excellence – were formally defined and embraced by the entire university community. Under the directive of Dr. Robles, the current CPU President, these values became integral to the educational experience, now being discussed by teachers from kindergarten to graduate school.

3. ISO and CHED’s Autonomous Status: Dr. Acanto’s tenure marked a significant turning point in CPU’s pursuit of excellence. In December 10, 2004, CPU achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification, signifying the university’s commitment to a robust quality management system. CPU’s Autonomous Status, granted in October 2001 and extended until November 14, 2008, further showcased the institution’s commitment to autonomous governance, setting an example for others in Region VI. Presently, CPU enjoys an autonomous status granted by the Commission on Higher Education, and is also ISO Certified 9001:2015.

In recognition of Dr. Acanto’s unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, Central Philippine University paid tribute by renaming the Junior High School Building as the “Juanito M. Acanto Hall” on April 19, 2018. This permanent memorial stands as a reminder of his profound impact on the institution.

The passing of Dr. Juanito M. Acanto is a profound loss, but his memory will live on through the enduring achievements and values he instilled at Central Philippine University. As the university community mourns the departure of this extraordinary leader, they also celebrate the remarkable legacy he leaves behind, inspiring generations to come.
