Central Philippine University

In a celebration of Filipino Heritage Month, Canada has declared March as a time to honor the rich cultural contributions of the Filipino community. Amidst the festivities, the Filipino Heritage Montreal (FHM) played a role in recognizing outstanding individuals, with one notable Centralian honoree – Mrs. Magdalena B. Calcetas, a distinguished nursing pioneer.

One of Magdalena’s achievements came on March 9, 2024, when FHSM honored her with the Gawad ng Pagkilala (Award of Recognition) during a ceremony at La Mesa at Plengke, Montreal, Canada. The award specifically acknowledged Maggie’s exceptional professionalism in nursing, a testament to her enduring dedication to the field. Due to health issues, Mrs. Calcetas was represented by Mrs. Amelia Anam Manong-og, a Centralian nurse as well, to accept the Plaque, Certificate and a gorgeous bouquet which was delivered the next morning by FHSM Chairman Mr. Alfonso Abdon and his wife Mrs. Corazon Diaz Abdon.

Originally from San Enrique, Negros Occidental, Magdalena, fondly known as Maggie, is a proud alumna of Central Philippine University (CPU), having graduated with a BS in Nursing in 1961. Her journey as a nurse spans across the Philippines and the USA before finding a home in Canada. In 1992, she made history by founding the Filipino Nurses Association of Quebec, Inc., a dedicated group supporting Filipino nurses navigating their careers in the Canadian healthcare system.

In 1996, Central Philippine University recognized Maggie’s outstanding contributions by bestowing upon her the “Distinguished Centralian” award. This accolade not only underlines Maggie’s commitment to excellence but also highlights CPU’s dedication to honoring its esteemed alumni, ensuring the Central Spirit resonates globally.

Maggie’s commitment to the Filipino nursing community extends beyond her professional duties. She introduced the CPU-IMH Nurses’ Pledge song, customizing it as the official anthem for the Filipino Nurses Association of Quebec. This uplifting song has become a symbol of unity and pride during their gala celebrations.

Maggie continues to be a pillar of support for CPU, actively engaging in various organizations like CPUAANA, CPUFOAA, and the CPU College of Nursing. Her unwavering commitment to her profession, her community, and her alma mater make Magdalena B. Calcetas a shining example of the Filipino spirit flourishing on Canadian soil. As Canada embraces Filipino Heritage Month, Maggie’s story stands as a beacon of inspiration, illustrating the profound impact individuals can make in preserving and promoting their cultural legacy.
