Apostol inspiring advocacy and resilience.

In a dazzling display of talent, intellect, and charisma, Alexander Ernest Apostol emerged as the 1st Runner-Up in the highly anticipated Mr. and Ms. CAS 2024 competition, hosted by the CPU Province of Arts and Sciences Student Council (PASSC) on March 2, 2024, at Rose Memorial Auditorium. With his remarkable performance, Apostol captivated the audience and judges alike, showcasing not only his exceptional talents but also his unwavering dedication to social advocacy.

Hailing from the Department of Political Science, Apostol, a 19-year-old first-year college student from Brgy. Poblacion, New Lucena, Iloilo, left an indelible mark on the competition with his passion for serving his community and uplifting the voices of those in need.

Reflecting on his journey, Apostol shared his initial thoughts upon hearing the results. “I was incomplete; I didn’t feel any emotion at that time. It feels surreal when you’re in that moment,” Apostol said.

Despite his initial disbelief, Apostol’s joy was palpable as the reality of his achievement sank in after the event. Motivated by a deep sense of purpose, Apostol explained his decision to participate in the competition, emphasizing his desire to use the platform to advocate for the marginalized and underprivileged.

“What really pushed me to join Mr. and Ms. CAS is that I know my purpose, I know who I speak for, I know that I can offer more with this kind of platform. And winning as first runner-up has introduced me to a lot of people, and to a lot of things that are very relevant in our society nowadays,” he said.

Despite facing challenges such as financial constraints and academic responsibilities, Apostol remained resolute in his commitment to making a difference.

“I don’t have enough budget, I don’t have enough financial support, and I don’t really know the policies when it comes to pageantry here at CAS. But, it’s good to know that even though it was very hard for me at first, there were opportunities that came my way that I didn’t even expect,” Apostol said.

Throughout the competition, Apostol’s personality and skill set shone brightly, earning him praise from both judges and peers.

“Coming from the province, I know the challenges of not being able to access opportunities and resources. That’s why I am passionate about reaching out to people, ensuring that they receive help and support. I want to uplift them and make them realize that they are not alone in their struggles. I want them to feel guided, appreciated, and valued. I genuinely care for them as individuals. This passion has inspired me to strive to serve my community, to serve our fellow Casimanwas, and not just them, but also people outside who are in need of assistance,” he said.

His experience as a student leader and his ability to connect with people on a personal level set him apart, demonstrating his capacity to inspire and uplift others.

“Being naturally street-smart has made me stand out, especially considering my initial hesitation about joining this competition. I believe my personality shines through in my ability to perform and connect with people while I didn’t win the title of Mr. CAS 2024, I am happy because I received a lot of positive feedback. People were inspired by my story, and some even became emotional during the interview round. It’s fulfilling to know that simple acts of kindness can move and inspire others to continue despite challenges,” Apostol said.

Despite the demanding nature of balancing academics and extracurricular activities, Apostol emphasized the importance of knowing one’s priorities. “As student leaders, it’s essential not only to serve the students but also to improve ourselves while doing so,” he said. His ability to manage his time effectively while excelling in his studies underscored his dedication and determination.

“This understanding helps me manage my time effectively because prioritization is key. Without knowing my priorities, I wouldn’t be able to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously,” Apostol said.

Reflecting on his journey, Apostol fondly recalled the memorable moments and highlights, particularly the friendships forged and connections made throughout the competition.

“I firmly believe that one of the most memorable experiences I had during my journey in Mr. CAS was meeting a lot of new friends and people, including seniors I hadn’t known in the first semester who instantly became my friends after the pageant, even becoming mutual Facebook friends afterward. Pageants are about making connections, forging friendships, and immersing yourself more deeply into what you’re passionate about. Whether you win or lose, it’s essential to continue your advocacy and pursue your passions. Making friends and connections is a key essence of pageantry,” Apostol said.

In offering advice to fellow students aspiring to participate in similar competitions, Apostol stressed the importance of knowing one’s purpose.

“If you truly believe that you are meant to win, if your heart is aligned with your goals, you will never lose your way. Ideally, you may face setbacks and disappointments, but even if you don’t win the competition, your purpose remains unaffected. Your purpose will never be defeated because you understand who you are, who you represent, the support you have, and how you will present yourself in the competition. That’s your advocacy. You are more than just the crown, the title, the sash, or the certificates. You are who you are, and the crown doesn’t define you. You define the crown yourself. That’s why knowing your purpose is crucial,” he said.

When asked about his plans for the future, Apostol expressed his intention to utilize his newfound recognition to further his personal and academic goals. He emphasized his commitment to continuing his involvement in student council activities and establishing initiatives in his barangay and municipality to address pressing social issues.

“I could make use of this opportunity by continuing my involvement in our student council and establishing my own organizations in my barangay and municipality. I intend to leverage my title as Mr. CAS 1st runner-up to uphold the legacy of the past and contribute to the Mr. and Ms. CAS competition by amplifying the voices of those in need of help, addressing unmet needs, and striving for positive change. My ability to fulfill my dreams, and I pledge to work tirelessly to support my fellow Casimanwas in addressing their needs and concerns for as long as I am able to do it,” Apostol said.

Looking ahead, Apostol remains open to the possibility of participating in future competitions, acknowledging the support and encouragement he has received from his peers and mentors. Regardless of the outcome, Apostol’s journey serves as a testament to the power of determination, passion, and purpose in effecting positive change.

“I was hesitant, but our supportive board members encouraged me to persevere. They expressed their expectation to see me again next year. However, I’m keeping my options open. I believe this opportunity will not limit my future possibilities, and I am hopeful to participate again next year,” Apostol said.

As Alexander Ernest Apostol continues to chart his path forward, his unwavering dedication to service and advocacy serves as an inspiration to his fellow Casimanwas and beyond, proving that true leadership knows no bounds.
