University Day 2017 holds festivities

Sights and Sounds—Central Philippine University is filled with color and music as Centralians high on the Central Spirit and clad in their University Day t-shirts celebrated the festivities of University Day 2017.
The merriments on September 28, 2017 started with the Foot Parade which first traversed Lopez Jaena St., then wove its way to the Jaro Plaza, went onwards to Taft North, and turned right at the Benigno Aquino Service Road. After 4 kilometers, the participants finally arrived back at CPU through Gate 7 where everyone then proceeded to the CPU Golden Lion’s Gym for the opening celebration.
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, shares that it is the faithfulness of the Lord that made CPU the university that it is today.
In his opening remarks, CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles highlighted that the celebration of the University Day is a celebration of faith and gratitude to God for blessing CPU with time, talent and treasure.
“As we celebrate U-Day, let us remember our founding parents who shared their time, talents and treasures, especially in sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us not forget how CPU came to be… Let us do our best to even make a better U-Day next year.” Dr. Robles later declared U-Day 2017 officially open.

From the Gym, everyone then proceeded to the streets for the Street Dance competition. The participants from the different departments and colleges showcased their creativity and talents as they impressed judges stationed in front of the Administration Building, Loreto D. Tupaz Building, Rose Memorial Auditorium, and behind the Big Field Grandstand.

They were reminded by Dr. Robles that as ambassadors of CPU, they need to be role models for the Centralian Community. The rest of the entourage included Mr. CPU Republic 2017 Miguel Lorenzo Hojilla of the College of Medicine and Ms. CPU Republic 2017 Glimmer Hope Deslate of the College of Business and Accountancy, Mr. University Day 2017 Ezra Jude Custodio of the College of Arts and Sciences and Ms. University Day 2017 Cara Eloesa Sullano of Senior High School, 3rd Runners Up Andre Eulalio of the College of Law and Belle Kate Gatilogo of Junior High School, 4th Runners Up Mark Agustin Capote of the College of Engineering and Jynea Baldevarona of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Runner Up Richard Manolo of the College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences.
The CPU Picnic gathered alumni, faculty and students of the different colleges and departments as they celebrate their hard work and effort during the University Day competitions. The Battle of the Bands, meanwhile, gathered music enthusiasts celebrating the Centralian sound and rhythm.
The Central Spirit was widely felt in the celebration of the University Day. Above all, it was a testimony of the Lord’s faithfulness through the 112 years of CPU.

A night of beauty and wit—Hundreds of Centralians gathered with their cheers and banners as Central Philippine University held the finals night of Mr. and Ms. CPU 2017 at the Rose Memorial Auditorium on September 26, 2017.
The night opened with a prayer led by Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, Director of the Office of Communications. Mrs. Hermely A. Jalando-on, committee member of the Search for Mr. and Ms. CPU 2017, then gave the welcome remarks in which she related this year’s U-Day theme to the pageant’s theme of superheroes. “What makes a hero? Here in Central Philippine University, we do away with the clichés. Gone are the capes, the retinue of sidekicks, and the required superpower. Instead, our heroes and heroines are those who willingly share their time, talents, and treasures. Tonight is not just a pageant night. It is a celebration of the Centralians’ selflessness, dedication, and unflagging desire to do their best and be the best. By simply choosing to show up and committing to the task, our candidates and contestants have shown us what heroes are.”

After the production number, the special awards were given. The following are the winners:

- Mr. and Ms. Congeniality: Mr. College of Medicine and Ms. College of Engineering
- Best in Production Number: Mr. Senior High School and Ms. College of Arts and Sciences
- Face of 2017: Mr. Education and Ms. Junior High School
The Face of 2017 is an award introduced by the committee only this year. Minor awards were also presented to the following:
- Best in Interview: Mr. and Ms. College of Medicine
- Best in Talent: Mr. College of Medicine and Ms. College of Business and Management
- Best in Active Wear: Mr. College of Hospitality Management and Ms. College of Medicine
- Best in Casual Wear: Mr. College of Hospitality Management and Ms. Senior High School
- Best in Formal Wear: Mr. College of Hospitality Management
- Best in Evening Gown: Ms. College of Medicine.
The Best Make-Up Artist award was given to Edzel Hechanova, the make-up artist of Ms. Junior High School.
After the minor awards, the Finalists for the Mr. and Ms. CPU titles were announced. For the male category, Mr. College of Law, Mr. Medicine, Mr. College of Engineering, Mr. College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences and Mr. College of Arts and Sciences had to battle it out for the title. Six Finalists were included in the male category as there was a tie for the fifth spot. For the female category, Ms. Senior High School, Ms. College of Arts and Sciences, College of Medicine, Ms. Junior High School and Ms. College of Business and Management became contenders for the crown.

For the final interview, the male contestants were asked, “If you have the power to save the world but you are limited by age and health, to whom will you pass on your superpowers and why?” The female candidates, on the other hand, had to answer: “A superhero is about to pass on his or her superpower to you, whose superpower would you like to have?”
At the end of the night, the title of Mr. CPU 2017 went to John Kirby Do of the College of Hospitality and Management. Miguel Lorenzo Hojilla of the College of Medicine was declared Mr. CPU Republic 2017 while Ezra Jude Custodio of the College of Arts and Sciences was Mr. University Day 2017. Third (3rd) Runner Up was Andre Eulalio of the College of Law, 4th Runner Up was Mark Agustin Capote of the College of Engineering, and Runner Up was Richard Manolo of the College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Sciences.

Angela Aninang of the College of Medicine was crowned Ms. CPU 2017 while Glimmer Hope Deslate of the College of Business and Accountancy was proclaimed Ms. CPU Republic 2017 and Cara Eloesa Sullano of Senior High School was Ms. University Day 2017. Belle Kate Gatilogo of Junior High School was 3rd Runner Up whereas Jynea Baldevarona of the College of Arts and Sciences was 4th Runner Up.
CPU holds 2nd University Day Celebration Bike Ride

With the theme Promoting Biking in the CPU Community, the university held its 2nd University Day Celebration Bike Ride on September 27, 2017. The bike route started at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park (APCP), through the Diversion Road, also known as Benigno Aquino Service Road, and back to APCP. This year’s University Day Celebration Bike Ride is spearheaded by the CPU-AAI, CPUR, and C4F.
The organizers gave a brand new bike to a lucky participant of this year’s University Day Bike Ride.
According to Mr. Pablo D. Nava IV, President of the C4F (Centralian Cruisers Cycling Club and Friends) and Federation of Iloilo Cycling Organizations, the fun ride is to encourage the CPU community and others and to promote biking as an alternative means of transportation to school and to the workplace and as an alternative outdoor hobby for the youth. This goes hand-in-hand with their drive for a healthier lifestyle and a cleaner environment.
“Our aim is to encourage and spread the love of cycling and to promote it as an alternative means of transportation to and from school and/or work so that every individual will lessen his/her carbon footprint, embody the concept of “share the road” (road safety and respect) and do their part for Mother Nature.”

Two hundred and three (203) bikers composed of students, alumni, and guests joined this year’s bike ride. Mr. Nava noted, “We are blessed to have participants from the different bike organizations of Iloilo and we are equally delighted with the participation of the ‘newbies’ or those who have taken up cycling as a sport or hobby recently or maybe even for the first time because this is the core of what we want to achieve in staging this event yearly. With this event, we hope to spark a hobby or interest in each and every one we reach, hoping and praying that this will later on evolve into a sport or discipline and, eventually, a life advocacy.”
One notable biker this year is Rev. Rosendo D. Mije, a Centralian pastor and a one-armed biker. Rev. Meji shared that he was delighted that CPU had spearheaded an event that encourages road sharing and health productivity. “I’m so glad that CPU has engaged in promoting biking as an alternative means of transportation to school and to the workplace and as part of a healthy lifestyle for Centralian students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends and family. I believe also that through this event, CPU has raised the consciousness of ‘road sharing’ among its constituents. For two years in a row, I have actively participated in this U-Day fun ride as a sign of my support [for] this advocacy and as a Centralian too. I wish that the support and presence of the CPU administration will continue to be visible in this event so that the Iloilo biking community will be more encouraged to participate in future events. I also wish that the organizers will look for more sponsors to make the event more attractive.”
Mr. Robert De Leon, advocate of C4F and faculty of the CPU Junior High School, thanked everyone for participating in the event. “Thank you Iloilo biking community for riding with us Centralian bikers as we start to celebrate our University Day. We appreciate the support you have shown to also help promote our ‘bike to school/work’ advocacy. To God be the glory!”
C4F is one of the advocacy groups here in Iloilo that proves that a person who shares his/her passion with others can achieve greater things in helping the community. One of the notable projects of the C4F is the Bayanihan sa Daan, a Presidential Awardee project. Through the said program, helmets and blinkers are given to Centralian students and workers who bike to school advocating safety inside and outside the campus. The group also marshals different events in Iloilo City, as volunteers for safety and security.
C4F demonstrates that once we use what we love to serve others, it becomes public service. We serve and pursue progress by doing what we love.
College of Engineering is University Day 2017 Debate Champion
John Elmer Loretizo is Best Speaker and Debater in this year’s University Debate Competition.
War of the words—The College of Engineering emerged as Champion in the University Day 2017 Debates. The final round of the competition was held at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park on September 27, 2017. The College of Education and the University Senior High School won 1stRunner Up and 2nd Runner Up respectively.
The College of Education bagged second place.
The championship round was between the College of Engineering (affirmative) and the College of Education (negative) on the proposition, “Resolve to implement HB 6152 or the Compressed Work Week Bill.” The battle for 2nd Runner Up was between the University Senior High School (affirmative) and the University Junior High School (negative) on the proposition of privatizing MIWD.

In the championship round, John Elmer Loretizo, captain of the team from the College of Engineering, was declared Best Speaker and Best Debater while Nicole Anike Durgo was Best Speaker and Marco Rafael Mucho was Best Debater in the battle for the 2nd Runner Up. Both were of the team representing the University Senior High School.
ICPO Director visits CPU
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles met with S/Supt. Biñas at the CPU Administration Conference Room.
Centralian Police Senior Inspector Henry F. Biñas, newly assigned Director for Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), visited CPU last September 25, 2017. S/Supt. Biñas paid a courtesy call on the University President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, at the Board of Trustees Conference Room at 2:00 PM. S/Supt. Biñas expressed his gratitude for the education and training he received in CPU. He said that without Central Philippine University, he would not have graduated from college, achieved a lot, and served the people. Furthermore, S/Supt. Biñas recounted his experience as a work student at CPU and how it prepared him for success.
S/Supt. Biñas first enrolled in the CPU College of Agriculture, before he studied at the Philippine Military Academy. Later, he was also admitted to the Philippine National Police Academy. His admission to PNPA changed his career in public service. He was first assigned as a police officer to Negros Occidental where he diligently worked on duties. In fact, instead of going out with friends for fun and drinks, he chose to spend his evenings studying Law at a nearby college. He went on to pass the Bar Exams and as a consequence, he became efficient in working on police-criminal cases.

Qualified to take over the position, he was called by the PNP Chief Police Director General Ronald Dela Rosa to serve as Director for Iloilo City Police Office. S/Supt. Biñas’ duties as director began on September 1, 2017. S/Supt. Biñas expressed his happiness because for now, he is not only near his hometown, Barotac Nuevo, he could also visit his beloved CPU anytime. He hinted to the University President that it is not impossible to have another chance for him to study at CPU.
He proceeded to the Alumni Affairs Office for an afternoon coffee and conversation with some alumni, classmates and friends, where he spent more time recalling fond memories, especially with the faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture. His visit was facilitated by the Security, Safety, and Discipline Office Head, Jonathan Tumalay and CPUAAI President, Dan Dorillo.
For the U-Day celebrations, the ICPO Director registered himself with twenty policemen from the Iloilo City Police Office to join the RCJC Homecoming Run in CPU on September 29, 2017. He assured everyone that he was doing his best to sustain peace and order in the City, and possibly extend a program to support the security at CPU and its surrounding communities.

CPU CMLS, MedTech Alumni Assn. hold Golden Celebration and Gala Night
With the theme, “Revering the past, Strengthening the Central Spirit, Nurturing the Future,” the CPU College of Medical Laboratory Science and CPU Medical Technology Alumni Association held their Golden Celebration and Gala Night at the Ann Margaret Ballroom, Diversion 21 Hotel on September 22, 2017.
In her welcome remarks, Dr. Ma. Corazon P. Porras, Acting Dean of the College of Medical Laboratory Science, acknowledged guests and alumni, and thanked them for attending the event. On the other hand, Mr. Daniel Dorillo, President of the CPU Alumni Association Inc., emphasized the active support of Centralians in reunions and gatherings, remarking that the Central Spirit is part of the character of CPU graduates.
Remembering memories and making them last – the CPU College of Medical Laboratory Science and CPU Medical Technology Alumni Association rekindled the Central Spirit of camaraderie in their reunion.
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, thanked everyone for their love and support for CPU and for bringing the Central Spirit of faith and excellence wherever they may be.
Dr. Rene D. Huinda, CPU Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology Batch 1987 and currently the CEO and President of Capiz Doctors’ Hospital, was guest speaker during the event. He thanked CPU for honing skills and for producing excellent medical practitioners here and abroad.
CMLS then gave a video presentation that highlighted testimonies on the Central Spirit of excellence and service from Keanna Sina-on, a student; Prof. Lerma M. Pendon, a member of the faculty; and Atty. Dr. Rhodona Ledesma.
The Key of Responsibility was also turned over to the new CPUMT Officers. Pastor Jec Dan Borlado, CPU BSMT Batch 2005, led the rededication of CMLS Alumni.
New PA for Western Visayas is a Centralian

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has a new Presidential Adviser for Western Visayas. Centralian Jane Javellana, an Ilongga businesswoman and entrepreneur, was given the new appointment. A native of Jaro, Iloilo City, Javellana is a graduate of Central Philippine University High School. She finished her BS Accountancy at the University of San Agustin, and her Master’s Degree from the University of the Philippines. She was one of the lead organizers of Duterte’s presidential Campaign in Lapaz, Iloilo City in 2016.
Her office is under the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas. Her duties involve coordinating with different agencies in Western Visayas “to hasten the resolution of immediate concerns, issues and problems of communities in the region.” She added that “Duterte is a working president, and if the problems are identified, he wants it immediately resolved.”
She pointed out opportunities for employment and infrastructure projects, summing up her office’s function as the “bridge between the people of Western Visayas and the President.” The Panay Negros Bridge, international port and tourism are among her priority concerns.
Javellana’s appointment took effect on August 1, 2017, but she started her official duties on September 11.
CPU Alumni Invitational Golfer Tournament tees off on October 7
Centralian golf enthusiasts may opt to extend their stay in Iloilo after the Grand Alumni Homecoming as the CPU Alumni Golfers Association (CPU AGA) holds its Invitational Golfer Tournament on October 7, 2017 at the Sta. Barbara Centenary Golf Course, Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.
According to CPU AGA Secretary Engr. Isagani J. Jalbuena, the event will have a Barrel Tee Off Time from 6:00 AM to 11:00AM. Trophies will be awarded for Open Category, Men, Open Category, Ladies; Open Category Seniors and all Centralian Men and Ladies. The awards will be given in the evening at the Iloilo Golf Course and Country Club, Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.
CPU congratulates 52 new MDs
Central Philippine University applauds its 52 new medical doctors in the recent Physician Licensure Examination (PLE) held on September 9-10 and 16-17, 2017 respectively.
Three thousand three hundred forty (3, 340) examinees out of 4, 064 passed this year’s PLE conducted by the Board of Medicine and held in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cebu, and Davao or a national passing percentage of 82.18%. CPU got a passing percentage of 82.54%.

CPU hails 7 new librarians
On September 25, 2017, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced the board passers for this year’s Librarian Licensure Examination. The national passing percentage is 60.29% with 545 out of 904 passing this year’s examination. CPU got a passing percentage of 58.33% with 7 board passers. The examinations were held in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Lagazpi, Tacloban and Tuguegarao.
