CPU Placed 7th in the Agricultural Engineering Board Exam

Central Philippine University is proud to have once again produced another board topnotcher in the person of Dee B. Lucena (BSAE 2017 cum laude) who placed 7th in the

in the Board Exam for Agricultural Engineers given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) last August 23-24, 2017 in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Legazpi and Tuguegarao. She leads the five other passers, namely:  Arveil T. Briones, Von Fiel M. Cajuyong, Julie Anne G. Cordero, Krystelle Faith P. Violeta and Shayne C. Villanueva giving CPU a 100% passing rate.

The national passing percentage is 48.31% and the results were released after two (2) working days. The August 2017 Agricultural Engineering board exam covered topics from rural electrification, agricultural processing, agricultural structures and allied subjects (34%); soil and water resources development and conservation, irrigation, drainage and allied subjects (33%); agricultural mechanization, agricultural power, agricultural machinery and equipment and allied subjects (33%).

Central Philippine University is the only school in Iloilo that offers Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering, to be renamed as Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering starting June 2018.

 

CPU signs MOA with DILG


Dr.Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President sign the Memorandum of Agreement with DILG and other partnering agencies for the establishment of WeViWaSH.

Water Stewardship – Central Philippine University signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Local Government Region 6 and other agencies for the establishment of the Western Visayas iWash Hub (WeViWaSH). WeViWash will provide capacity development of target municipalities with waterless barangays to have access to basic water services through the Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig sa Lahat (SALINTUBIG) Program, Assistance to Disadvantaged Municipalites (ADM), and other Water and Sanitation Governance Programs of the country for 2017-2022.

CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles signed the said MOA during the Public Forum on Water Governance held by the University of the Philippines Visayas EIDR Water Governance for Development and the Office of the Continuing Education and Pahinungod in collaboration with the DILG Region 6 at the GCE Building, UP Visayas on August 29, 2017. CPU was also represented Dr. Lenny Rose P. Mucho, Director of Review, Continuing Education and Consultancy Center and Dr. April Ann B. De La Gente from the College of Business and Accountancy.

The aim of the agreement is to strengthen the cooperation between and among the partner-implementers to achieve the objectives of the Regional Hub. Its objectives include assisting the national government, particularly DILG, in the delivery of the capacity development programs intended for the participating municipalities covered by the SALINTUBIG, ADM and other Water and Sanitation Governance Programs and strengthening local water and sanitation governance by facilitating institutionalized multi-sectoral participation in water and sanitation.


WeViWaSH aim to help target communities to have access to basic water services. 

As a WeViWash Hub, CPU will provide expertise, knowledge and information and extend guidance and motivation on iWaSH governance to participating communities. It shall also create a pool of trainers and resource persons that can be tapped for training, mentoring and coaching different aspects of planning and managing iWaSH facilities.

Other partner agencies include Capiz State University, Iloilo Science and Technology University, University of the Philippines Visayas, We Heal Foundation and the University of San Agustin.

CPUAA Florida Chapter holds Induction of Officers

A lifetime commitment to Central – apart from graduating with a degree from CPU, Centralians enter the real world a linkage to other alumni that make them feel welcome wherever they may be.

Proof of the alumni’s active participation in keeping the Centralian Spirit strong, the Central Philippine University Alumni Association Florida Chapter held its Induction of Officers at the Florida Hotel in Orlando, Florida in August 12, 2017.

The event was graced by CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles who led the induction of the officers for 2017-2018. He thanked the alumni for their continued love for CPU and for being active in the alumni affairs.

Centralians win SMC Project Proposal Grant


Centralians win Project Proposal Grant Competition during the Angat Buhay 2017 Summit at Metro Manila last August 14-15, 2017.

Jan Christian Española and Blessed Bea Plondaya, representatives of the Koalisyon ng Demokratikong Mag-aaral Para Sa Sambayanan (KOALISYON) of Central Philippine University emerged victorious in the San Miguel Corporation Project Proposal Grant Competition during the Angat Buhay Youth Summit 2017.

KOALISYON is a recognized special organization of CPU and the pair bested other representatives from all over the Philippines and ranked 2ndamong 200 youth organizations in the competition held in Microtel by Wyndham – UP TechnoHub, Metro Manila from August 14 – 15, 2017.

Española and Plondaya as the official project ambassadors of Project UmamBag Tayo!, a livelihood and social entrepreneurship program for the students under the Work Study Program of the university will be receiving a grant worth P 25, 000.00 for its implementation.

“It was an incredible experience to network with other youth organizations and it was a great challenge on our part to represent well the university and our beneficiary community during the summit,” said Española, the project coordinator of the organization.

Out of 200 different youth organizations who submitted application forms consisting of their community development advocacies and supporting documents or certificates, only 50 organizations were qualified to proceed and attend the summit in Manila.

During the summit, the representatives of the different participating organizations underwent an intensive project proposal workshops, marketing training, focus group discussions and mentorship programs with heads of various leading companies.

From the 50 semi-finalists, only 20 organizations were chosen to present a business pitch to a board of judges composed of professionals, and executives of San Miguel Corporation and the Office of Vice President Leni Robredo.

“I believe that our victory came from our passion, focus and commitment to come up with a project to help out one of the core foundations of the university which are the work students”, explained Plondaya.

The summit was organized and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Kaya Natin Movement, Millennials.Ph and the Office of Vice President Leni Robredo.

President of the Philippine Haggai Institute Alumni Association visits CPU

Mr. Andrew Ching, President of the Philippine Haggai Institute Alumni Association and at the same time President and CEO of Williams Printing and Packaging based in Cebu visited the CPU campus last August 29, 2017. He was with his wife, Josephine Ching CFO of Williams Printing and Packaging. The couple was toured around the campus by Dr. Florentino Alerta II, CPU’s Coordinator of the Health, Fitness and Lifestyle Management, and a Batch President of a recently concluded Haggai Institute National Seminar.

Dr. Alerta introduced the Chings to Dr. Lejo Braña and the Packaging Department of the College of Engineering. They found out that CPU is capable of testing the packaging materials that they produce. Usually, their printing company would send their packaging materials outside the country to be tested. Hopefully, through this introduction,CPU will become the testing center of their company.

The Chings were in Iloilo City as facilitators/lecturersof the Haggai Institute National Leadership Seminar last August 24-28, 2017. They are graduates of the Haggai Institute Leadership Seminar in Maui, Hawaii, USA.  There were 35 participants in the national seminar conducted at the Iloilo Grand Hotel.

One of the lecturers was Prof. Rowena Libo-on, Director of the CPU Transnational Programs. The worship celebration speaker was Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, CPU Director for Communications, and President of the Haggai Institute Alumni Association Iloilo Chapter. The convocation speaker was PNP Regional 6 Regional Director PCSUPT Cesar Hawthorne Binag.

The Vision that drives the Haggai Institute (HI) is they want to see every nation redeemed and transformed through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The HI does this through training leaders globally to impact their world locally. Past and current administrators of CPU have attended the international seminar of the Haggai Institute. Some of them are Dr. Juanito Acanto, Dr. Perla Suyo, Dr. Fely David, Dr. Lucy Catalogo, Atty. Zacarias Bedona, Prof. Rowena Libo-on, Rev. Joniel Howard Gico, Rev. Cris Amorsolo Sian, Rev. Jerson Narciso, Rev. Francis Neil Jalando-on, Engr. Amy Castigador, and Rev. Dr. Bernabe Pagara.

Also present in the graduation ceremony was Mrs. Susan Lee Chomi, the Haggai Institute Regional Representative for the Philippines. Mrs. Chomi is a Centralian and was the Philippine representative in the search for the CPU Centennial Queen last 2005.

RCECC holds Seminar Workshop on Qualitative Research Methodologies

With the aim of expanding knowledge and expertise on qualitative research methodologies, the Review, Continuing Education and Consultancy Center held a seminar workshop on “Qualitative Research Methodologies” at the 4th Floor, Henry Luce III Library, Conference Room I on August 31, 2017.

For the welcome remarks, CPU President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles acknowledged participants and introduced the resource speaker, Dr. Idrenne Lim-Alparaque. Dr. Alparaque is a Doctor of Philosophy in Education graduate of University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Her experience as an educator, include teaching at university, secondary, elementary,& kindergarten levels, she taught Theories in Human Development, Teaching the Language Arts, Children’s Literature & Creative Dramatics for Young Children, Learning Theories, Language Acquisition & Development, Linguistics & Pedagogy, Critical-Interpretive Methods & Approaches to Human Science Research and Thesis and Dissertation Writing.

She has authored children’s  books entitled “Mommy” and How Did Founding Editor: Journal of Learning about learning: An Interdisciplinary Publication On Human Science Research; Executive Director for Research: Praxis Research Seminars, Director: Education Week Central Washington University, Research Consultant: Graduate Research Workshops and Seminar presentations, Methods & Models in Human Science Research, Theorizing in the Corporate World, “Langsaam Lezen: Slow Reading for Research Purposes”, Thesis & Dissertation Writing, Critical – Interpretive Approaches to Human Science Research, Hermeneutic Writing, Educators Workshop Series: The Nature of Children’s Thinking, “Language Acquisition Development”, “Language Cognition & Culture”, “Poetry in the Classroom” and “Creative Dramatics for Young Children”.

For the closing program, RCECC Director, Dr. Lenny Rose P. Mucho thanked participants and guest speaker for making the seminar workshop successful.

CPU celebrates Buwan ng Wika


Dr. Merle L. Junsay, Dean, CPU College of Education awards Dr. Nelson A. Pomado a Certificate of Appreciation for being resource speaker during the Linggo ng Wika.

A University-wide celebration of Buwan ng Wika 2017 was held on August 29-30, 2017 with the theme “Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago”

Dr. Merle L. Junsay made her opening remarks, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have the Buwan ng Wika given special importance for its role in the school academic curriculum.


Filipino became the  Philippines’ national language by virtue of Executive Order No. 134 issued on December 30, 1937.

A poster slogan contest and a film showing were included in the schedule of activities.

The Office of the President and the Cultural Affairs Office on the other hand showcased in the afternoon program at the Rose Memorial the evolution of the Filipino language. It presented how Filipino terms or dialects have changed in a short time, along with culture, lifestyle and technology. Thanks to the Resource Speaker Dr. Nelson A. Pomado, former Dean of the CPU College of Education and master in literary writing in Filipino, who delivered not just a message to the students but a treasure trove of how our language have become what it is today since the American times in the Philippines. It was very informative, totally relevant and useful in this in this fast-changing social communications for the young people of today.

Winners of the Poster-Making Contest.

Pomado presented a sequence of the old and new films, which included the influence of English songs of the popular Beatles of the 60’s, their “intro” into the Philippine culture, and then their influence with local artists – including pop icon Hadji Alejandro, Sharon Cuneta and many more. The local artists according to Pomado may have endeared themselves with the Western cultural compositions; what is important was translation of the songs into Tagalog.

The college students who are enrolled in Filipino subjects in the First Semester were the main audience of the event.

Awards for Excellence given to CPU Senior High School Students for SY 2016-2017

Eriman, Director of the CPU Senior High School Department awards a Certificate of Appreciation to Mr. Jo Jan Paul Peñol.

How do you recognize students who do something that reflects the quality of education and training at Central Philippine University? Professor Edgar A. Eriman, Head of the Senior High School Department at CPU thanks the Department of Education for implementing a policy that requires schools to give excellence awards to students at every end of the Semester or School Year – depending on the School’s Calendar.

Excellence for Sports and Special Awards were given to achievers and performers of the CPU Senior High School students on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the Rose Memorial Auditorium at 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM.  Prof. Eriman said that the Excellence Awards were given to students who are valuing their efforts on academics and extracurricular activities..

The Guest Speaker, Mr. Jo Jan Paul Peñol, former Editor, emphasized the Spirit of volunteerism which is inherent in every Centralian as the big factor in achieving excellence, but “nobody but you will take the first step in volunteerism”, he added.

Among the Excellence Awardees was Jacqui Rose Lamparero, (a.k.a. Ironwoman of CPU) a senior high school student who joined the 2017 ASTC Triathlon Asian Championship on July 21, 2017 held at Jakabaring Sport City, Palembang, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Lamparero who was able to finish the 750m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km course in 01:21:31 placing 22nd among international contestants in the Junior Elite Female category, also previously received other sport awards from her participation in the local, national and international events.

Mr. Peñol speaks about the importance of volunteerism.

She exemplified excellent quality from herself by way of volunteering to the difficult sports adventure in her early age as a Senior High School of CPU. Due to her achievement, she was granted full scholarship by Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President.

There were 218 awardees for academic excellence, 30 for Extra Curricular Activities and 2 other special awards.
