Judge Lunel Gabayoyo, Doctor of Management graduate delivers her response.
On October 2, 2020, Central Philippine University held a virtual Commencement Exercises for the graduates of Masteral and Doctoral Studies. At the start of the virtual program, Dr. Rowena M. Libo-on, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, expressed her congratulations to the graduates and parents. She reiterated that despite the limitation brought by the pandemic, CPU made it possible that they will be given full honors and acknowledgments. The virtual Commencement Exercises premiered at the CPUTV Facebook page and Youtube channel.
The program started with an opening prayer led by Myla Naria Conejar, Doctor of Education graduate of 2020. The Pambansang Awit, which was played by the CPU Symphonic Band, followed.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas extended his warmest congratulations to the postgraduate Batch of 2020. In his speech, the Mayor reminded the graduates that “You are not defined by titles, honors, recognitions or achievements earned, but will be defined by your character as an individual.”
School of Graduate Studies Dean Dr. Rowena Libo-on gave the opening remarks during the ceremony.
Atty. Von Lovel D. Bedona, Chairman of the CPU Board of Trustees, followed with his message to the graduates. He acknowledged that “The pandemic caused by Covid-19 has not prevented us in giving you the honor and recognition.” Bedona, who is a Master of Laws degree holder, acknowledged the graduates in their decision to avail of the Exemplary Christian Education for Life given by CPU. He extended his warmest and sincerest congratulations on behalf of the Board of Trustees of Central Philippine University.
CPUAAI President Atty. Joshua C. Alim conducted the pledge of allegiance with the Graduates.
In his message, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, University President said, “This pandemic has drastically affected our lives. Resilience and Perseverance became our strength because it is from the Lord.” Dr. Robles shared a verse from Jeremiah 17: 7-8 which says: “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat comes, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” He honored the graduates and their mentors and wished for Scientia et Fides to guide them as they bring about change in the community.
Before the conferment of degrees on the graduates, Mrs. Hermely A. Jalando-on, a Doctor of Management student, rendered a spiritual song entitled, “Find Us Faithful”. Dr. Rowena M. Libo-on presented this year’s candidates for graduation to Dr. Robles. There were 24 students who graduated from their masteral courses, and 2 students from their doctoral courses.
A Message from the Graduates was delivered by Judge Lunel Gabayoyo, a Doctor of Management graduate. Rev. Cris Amorsolo V. Sian, Senior Pastor, University Church delivered the Prayer for the Graduates. Atty Joshua C. Alim, CPU Alumni Association President, conducted the pledge of allegiance with the picture of graduates swearing-in. The singing of the Alma Mater song, Central My Central, concluded the virtual ceremony.

CPU takes root in the Christian spirit of the Baptist missionaries who gave scholarships to dedicated and hard-working young Filipinos.
Celebrating its history of producing exemplary Christian scholars—The Central Philippine University Student Development Programs held its annual Scholarship Awarding and Recognition Program at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park on August 6, 2018.
The event aimed at recognizing the various individuals, families, and private and public institutions that have benevolently supported thousands of Centralians for many years and counting.
Rev. Gico, Vice President for Student Affairs together with Pastor Alfred C. Morales, Recruitment Officer awarding CPUR President, Mr. JM Suelo, a scholarship for his leadership services.
The invocation was led by Pastor Mary Grace F. Labis, Associate Pastor of the University Church. It was then followed by the singing of the National Anthem with Ms. Crista Huyong.
For the acknowledgement of donors, Dr. Margen A. Java, Director of the Student Development and Programs, thanked the donors for their generous contribution to the education of deserving and hard-working Centralians, “Indeed, Central Philippine University is privileged and blessed because every year we have new and continuing donors. This year we have 529 new scholars and grantees.”
For the welcome remarks, Vice President for Student Affairs, Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, highlighted the spirit of generosity of Centralians and thanked them for giving back to the university.
A special number from Mae Aindraby Basil, scholar and member of the Sari-Saot Dance Troupe.

An artwork commemorating 115th Foundation Day of Central Philippine University by Efraim Alfaras.
An inner desire pushed this talented employee of Central Philippine University to follow his quest for a new innovation in art. Efraim Galia Alfaras, popularly known as “Sir Ef” in the campus, is a committed Centralian. A self-taught artist, his works in the printing press (including his practical, and technical suggestions on layout and color techniques), transcend his basic instincts on creativity and artistic initiatives.
Eventually, he contributed his talent outside of the University printing press to help events – such as the annual Festival of Lights and Music at Central and other projects of CPU and the CPU Alumni Association. He taught design at the College of Packaging Engineering while coaching art in the community during his free time.
Alfaras has come a long way from his association with Iloilo Visual Artists Association (IVAA), whose members included many professional artists, who have achieved much on their own pursuits. He is currently a member of the Centralian Visual Artists Association (CENVAS) and an active organizer of art exhibits for deserving work students at Central.
He excels in any painting medium available for use on canvas, but his quest for a new innovation in painting is continuous. There was this inner realization in Efraim that he “can create a new kind of painting style that’s different from that commonly used by any regular artists.” He pondered upon the possibility to create a new kind of painting style without using paint and brush. He departed from his first love – oil paint and acrylics – and began his journey to find his new medium.
In 2014, God provided him the answer. He said, “I unintentionally dropped a hot rod I was holding. It landed on a piece of fabric and right before my very eyes I saw an insignificant meltdown of fibers that revealed their liquefied form which I can readily use on canvas. I applied the newfound medium right away.” “It took me six months to finish my first fabric art, and six years to finally master this new style,” he added.
Alfaras, who hails from Guimaras Island, usually depicts visual and emotional experiences on canvas. One of the upcoming events of CENVAS is an art exhibit with most of his paintings that will be for sale. Part of the proceeds thereof will be given to deserving work students for their needs. Alfaras requests any artist may donate their work for this purpose.

CPU Sustainable Campus Committee pose at Silliman Hall at the Silliman University, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental.
In the December 6, 2014 meeting of the CPU Board of Trustees, a resolution “to accept an Environmental Sustainability Policy presented by the University President” was approved. CPUBOT Resolution No. 24 provided “for the protection, preservation, conservation and restoration of the environment by making the person a responsible steward – thereby advocating widespread use of clean and renewable energy, and efficient use of resources in its operation, instruction and community engagement in local, national and global arena”.
A group of faculty and staff, considered as “stewards of environment,” were called upon by the University President in 2017 to spearhead programs focused on environmental care and protection. This group was called the Sustainable Campus Committee. The committee decided on one “doable” project from among several ideas that came up from the group. As a result of the Board Resolution for Environmental Sustainability Policy, the Conversion of CPU-owned vacant lot(s) to an Eco-Park was proposed.
In an interview on “Looking Forward,” a CPUTV public affairs program, Mr. Prim Vergara III, Sustainable Campus Committee Chairman, clarified that “the Eco Park project will be a consortium of different units, departments and colleges of the University. The pool of ideas and strategic contributions by the committee members and partner units will result to the betterment of the environment.”
“Among the programs conceived by the committee are Tree Planting and Propagation, Botanical Garden, Vegetable Farm, Park Facility Design and Improvement, Park Energy and Facility Resources, Eco Pond and Park Maintenance,” Vergara added.
It was further decided that the Eco Park would be a laboratory facility for the academic departments with related fields or discipline in botany, agriculture, renewable energy and environment; water management, landscape and soil studies; management and marketing; and others.
Among the partner units are the University Campus Grounds and Upkeep Department; College of Agriculture, Resource and Environmental Sciences; Life Science Department; National Service Training Program; College of Nursing and Allied Services; CPU Republic; University students organizations; CPU Alumni Association, Inc.; College of Agriculture Alumni Association, Inc.; and Community Engagement and Service Learning Center.

Neste G. Taala, host of CPU TV Program Centralian Profiles, interviews Yaneshla Aparicio and her mother Chrysta Aparicio.
In the era of social media, Millennials are keen to share whatever’s going on inside their minds. Most of the time, these posts are not being monitored by their parents. Can you blame these parents? They have their own busy schedules too. However, one mom shares her secret on how to be part of her child’s social media life.
In an interview on “Centralian Profiles” on August 7, Miss Chrysta June Aparicio shared that to be able to monitor her daughter’s posts online, she created a page, the Facebook account Chaela and CJ Moments, where both she and her daughter, Yaneshka Aparicio, are admins.
On the FB page where they upload their videos, Miss Chrysta always has the final say on what gets posted, and, according to her, her daughter is fine with that. It’s not about having lesser freedom than other kids have; rather, it is being more responsible with what you post: “Think before you click.”
“Social media really has a lot of effects on them … It’s really important that we, as parents, are guiding them,” Miss Chrysta June explained.
To recall, Yaneshka is a Grade 5 pupil of CPU who made a VLOG (Video Blog) “Alas Dose Na, Fresh pa ba Kayo?” which went viral with 1 million views, 17 thousand shares and 16 thousand likes.

Dizon (right) receiving his award at the Municipal Hall of Pavia with Mayor Luigi Gorriceta (left).
Centralian Law graduate Mr. Dexter G. Dizon was awarded the 2nd best photo in Region 6 on the 120th Anniversary of the Civil Service Commission last September 23, 2020.
Mr. Dizon’s entry in the regional photography competition represents the front- liners in their fight against the COVID-19 disease; a common scenario in hospitals where service is not just about duty, but about compassion and heroism to save lives.
Dizon’s winning photo is a common scenario in the fight against Covid -19.
“The Registered Medical Technologists of LGU-Pavia choose to be happy while risking life and limb in painstakingly swabbing one Pavianhon at a time in order to inspire them to be optimistic of the journey to the new normal. Through Divine Providence and the able leadership of Mayor Luigi Gorriceta, Pavianhons are assured that they, together with the rest of humanity heal as one,” reads the explanation of Dizon’s winning entry.
The award was given during a “Lingkod Bayan” ceremony in Pavia, Iloilo. Dizon, who is a former three-term councilor of the Municipality of Pavia has received many awards in local and national photo competitions.

Yaneshka is also a well-rounded daughter who does painting, karate and modelling on the side.
Yaneshka Aparicio, a grade 5 pupil of CPU Elementary School, is the girl behind the viral video “Alas Dose Na, Fresh pa ba kayo?” where she flaunts out to the whole world her freshness under the prickly heat of the sun.
The video which was uploaded on their Facebook page Chaela and CJ Moments earned 1 million views, 17 thousand shares and 16 thousand likes online. During an interview on “Centralian Profiles” on August 7 with Yaneshka and her mother, Chrysta June Aparicio, they revealed that the result was unexpected. They were both overwhelmed because some people were asking for a photo with Yaneshka, and those who are outside Iloilo were requesting for a shout out.
But she is more than those video blogs. Yaneshka is also a well-rounded daughter who does painting, karate, and modeling on the side. In fact, she passed the audition of World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) modeling category although they were unable to push through due to financial constraints. Instead, Yaneshka focused on her studies in which she excels as well. In 2016, Yaneshka was featured in People’s Choice of Sikat Ka Iloilo for helping her mother make munchkins which allows her mom some extra income. Mom Chrysta June indeed feels blessed to have Yaneshka for a daughter.
Yaneshka, for her part, inspires fellow Centralians to be confident with themselves, “Be confident and don’t be shy to try new things because there is no harm in trying.”
