Then an opportunity came last December 2021 wherein we were recruited by the SHS council and were given a chance to pitch a project. The first thing that came up to my mind was this,” she said.

Some participants during the webinar that was conducted last March 12, 2022.
The College of Hospitality Management of the Central Philippine University in partnership with OMNI Aviation conducted a webinar on Airline and Aviation beyond the Pandemic last Saturday, March 12, 2022. The attendees of the webinar were estimated to not more than 195 CHM 3rd year students who are preparing for their on the job training (OJT).
OMNI AVIATION is the official training partner of CHM for training in Aviation, Cabin crew, Ground handling, and IATA certification courses. The webinar started as Professor Ma. Medalla P. Baliao, Dean of the College of Hospitality Management gave an opening remarks to the participants. The guest speaker is Ms. Christine Joy Reid, a graduate of BS Tourism at the University of Santo Tomas. Ms. Christine Joy is an Ilongga whose father is from Dumangas, Iloilo. On the year 2003-2012, Ms. Reid both worked as an on ground and in-flight attendant in Qatar Airways. She started working in the OMNI Aviation on the year 2017.
Adjustments such as wearing of face masks and other necessary health measures to prevent COVID were discussed to inform the attendees the “new normal” in the aviation or airline industry. Ms. Reid also discussed how the airline industry was affected during the spike of the pandemic, such as the retrenchment of airline employees or crew members and decreasing of salaries leading to the increase of unemployed individuals in time of the pandemic. But despite of the disadvantage brought by the pandemic to the aviation industry, still the number of students who wished to work in this field of work never ceases.
Universal precaution kits and other basic health necessities needed on board were also highlighted in lieu of the effect brought about by the pandemic since passengers on board are more conscious nowadays than the pre pandemic time. Disinfections and regular screening of cabin crew members and staff is also a must in the airline industry nowadays to ensure the safety of their passengers and themselves.
Ms. Reid also brought up the special skills, trainings and workshops of the OMNI Aviation to aspiring and dedicated learners who dreams to fly and seek career opportunities in the airline industry. Students from the CHM department were actively participating as they enthusiastically ask questions for them to learn and prepare for the profession they are about to achieve. Fly and soar high students!

CAS Provincial Board holds their legislative session via Google Meet with CAS students.
Central Philippine University’s (CPU) College of Arts and Science Provincial Council (CASPC) held their 20th Regular Legislative Session entitled Pulong CASimanwa open to public via Google Meet last March 11, 2022. The objective is to uphold their Transparency and Accountability Program for the College of Arts and Sciences students.
Four resolutions were discussed in their first public legislative session. Authored by Board Member Jennifer Erika Angeles, Resolution No. 74, which focuses on the implementation of literary competitions such as extemporaneous speaking, binalaybay, and declamation, aims to recognize talents of every CAS student in the field of literary speech. The literary speech competition entitled Sugid will be launched from March 21 to April 9. The said resolution is co-authored by Board Member Collyn Maxie Rose Moscoso and sponsored by Board Member Glory Fe N. De La Cruz.
On March 19, under the Resolution No. 75, the CASPC – League of Organization Presidents will partner with The Beneficent Hands Inc. for an outreach project in Pototan, Iloilo. The said resolution upholds the establishment and operation of student organizations to become active partners in the pursuit of local autonomy. Resolution No. 75 is authored by Board Member Jay-F David and sponsored by Board Member Moscoso.
The CASPC also discussed the appointment of their new general secretary, Ms. Ma Trini De Ocampo, under Resolution No. 76, for the A.Y. 2021-2022 second semester, following the resignation of the previous general secretary, Ms. Leah Dayal. The said resolution is authored by Board Member Maria Divhina Alyssa Yasay and sponsored by Board Member David. CASPC also implemented the collection of the student council fee for the second semester of A.Y. 2021-2022 amounting to Php80.00 for the CAS under Resolution No. 73.
According to Iana Lexlee Cogollo, Vice Governor of CASPC, holding legislative sessions in public is vital as it allows democracy to thrive and allows citizens to participate.
“I adhere to the principle that ‘Public Office is a Public Trust’. Therefore, the policies and regulations that we impose on our people concern the public interest since they are the ones who will benefit. As a result, they must be informed and be able to engage in the discussion and deliberation that goes into crafting a resolution, ordinance, or policy,” Cogollo added.
Cogollo also said that they hold their legislative sessions publicly, mainly for transparency and accountability, as it ensures the students that the initiatives and projects initiated for them were properly assessed and evaluated and was not a result of an impulsive decision.
According to Board Member David who authored Pulong CASimanwa, they have been aiming for a more transparent CASPC for this academic year, hence the authorship of a resolution establishing Pulong CASimanwa for their transparency and accountability program.
Pulong CASimanwa is effective for the whole 2nd Semester of the A.Y. 2021-2022. The provincial board will be inviting all CAS students monthly for the Regular Legislative Meeting through Google Meet.

Maragsâ, one of the typefaces created by Centralian John David Maza (Photo grabbed from johndavidmaza.gumroad.com).
John David Maza is a 23-year old graduate of Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering from Central Philippine University’s College of Engineering, whose typeface creations made its way locally and internationally as people continue to use his fonts in their events and publications.
It was November of 2019 when Maza downloaded a free-font creation software and started playing around with it.
When asked what inspired Maza in creating fonts, he stated that, “We, at the Central Echo, attended The Spectrum Fellowship in Talisay City last March 2019 (which was organized by The Spectrum of University of St. La Salle-Bacolod) where campus journalists from all over the country would gather together. There, we had the chance to listen to the talk “Patriotism through Digital Art” by Aaron Amar, designer of the popular jeepney-inspired fonts, Quiapo and Cubao, where he introduced his inspirations and process of creating the fonts.”
He also added that as a layout artist, he has already been using a lot of various fonts for their publication, but never did it occur to him before that it would also be possible for him to create his own.
Maza is currently enrolled at Type West, a year-long post-graduate certificate program by The Letterform Archive, based in San Francisco, California wherein he gets to learn from experienced type designers and experts in different aspects of the field, with the goal of creating more and better Filipino fonts in the near future.
Maza has also other fonts which are currently in progress and because typeface design is a time-consuming practice, he said that, “It is common among type designers to have all these unfinished projects and shelved ideas, but what I’ve been doing recently is I just release even the in-progress fonts as long as they’re already usable, keeping the mindset, “Just put your work out there.””
His latest release was the, “Lapì typeface,” which was inspired by, “panlapi,” or affixes in grammar.
Recently, his, “Maragsâ typeface,” was used in almost every publication material during the People’s rally for VP Leni Robredo’s presidency held at Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental on Friday, March 11, 2022.
“It feels entirely different when it is used closer to home. As an Ilonggo and a type designer, it is very heart-warming and proud to see Maragsâ being used in the materials of the People’s Rally in Negros Occidental; in a movement this large, hoping for a brighter future for our country,” Maza said.
Licensing for most of his fonts are on pay-what-you-can-basis, which means people who would like to use his typeface creations can chip in any amount to support his work.
“Maragsâ,” can be downloaded for free in Maza’s website—johndavidmaza.gumroad.com—and is also accessible in Canva’s collection of Filipino fonts.
