by Cyrus A. Natividad

The new Officer-in-Charge, Office of Sports and Athletics, Edwin Caro Laru-an.

Central Philippine University Office of Sports and Athletics has a new head. Edwin Caro Laru-an is the Officer-in-Charge, Office of Sports and Athletics starting June 1, 2018. He took over the job from Atty. Alejandro Somo, who recently retired after serving CPU for almost four years.

Laru-an served as CPU TV Production Coordinator before moving in to his new office at the University Gym. He joined CPU in 2006. After graduating from WVSU with the degree in BS Mass Communications in 1999, Laru-an immediately worked with Bombo Radyo Iloilo as sports broadcaster in a public affairs program; and Chief of the investigative report section.

Laru-an made many friends in sports circles particularly in his hometown Barotac Nuevo where professional football players are grown. He was appointed media officer of the professional Stallion Football Club based in Barotac in 2013 up to 2015. While at CPU, he was sent as a media representative to national events such as the Palarong Pambansa, University Games and National PRISAA Meet.

The new head of the CPU Office of Sports and Athletics talked about his happiness in working for Central Philippine University: “With a good working atmosphere and as a Christian university, you feel nearer to God. We are assured of cooperation, loyalty, and faith.” He added, “I am willing to face new challenges in this new job that God has given me to work on.”

Laru-an looks forward to give his utmost attention for the betterment of the teams, popularly known as the Golden Lions, and the whole organization. He shared that his objectives are “to aim for more championships and to create more opportunities to help the poor but deserving athletes, particularly in their desire to study at Central Philippine University.”

Laru-an also shared that “planning for discipline and teamwork of the Golden Lion athletes has already begun before the first semester of school year 2018-2019 opened. We expect that student athletes will have the willingness to learn in school and excel in their respective teams.” The new head is ably assisted by the office secretary, Mr. Gibbs G. Caluba, who has served five sports directors before Mr. Laru-an.

Laru-an promised to continue his predecessor’s goal, “To win as champions!”
