“Clean Water and Sanitation” – Seeds of Faith – July 15, 2024

Today, we continue our 17-part Seeds of Faith series on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, proudly supported by Central Philippine University. Our focus today is on the sixth goal: Clean Water and Sanitation. Our guiding scripture is John 4:14, which says, “But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

First, accept that Jesus is the Living Water.

In John 4:14, Jesus speaks of the living water He provides, which leads to eternal life. This verse highlights the spiritual significance of water, symbolizing the life-giving and sustaining power of Christ. Just as physical water is essential for our bodies, spiritual water is essential for our souls. Jesus offers us this living water, satisfying our deepest spiritual thirst and leading us to eternal life.

While we cherish this spiritual truth, we must also recognize the importance of physical water. Clean water is a fundamental human need and a precious gift from God. As stewards of His creation, we have a responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to this vital resource. Providing clean water and sanitation is an expression of God’s love and care for humanity, reflecting His desire for us to have both abundant physical life and eternal spiritual life.

Second, recognize the necessity of clean water and sanitation.

The SDG of Clean Water and Sanitation aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Access to clean water and proper sanitation is crucial for health, well-being, and human dignity. Sadly, a lot of people around the world still lack these basic necessities, leading to preventable diseases and suffering.

As Christians, we are called to respond to this need with compassion and action. Central Philippine University, by supporting clean water and sanitation initiatives, plays a vital role in this mission. We can also contribute by raising awareness, supporting water projects, and advocating for policies that protect and provide clean water. By ensuring that everyone has access to clean water and sanitation, we promote health, reduce poverty, and uphold the dignity of all people.

Third, remember our role as stewards of God’s creation.

God has entrusted us with the care of His creation, including the precious resource of water. Good stewardship involves using water responsibly, protecting it from pollution, and ensuring its sustainable use for future generations. This includes practicing conservation, supporting clean water initiatives, and encouraging others to do the same.

The church can lead by example, promoting sustainable practices within our communities and supporting efforts to improve water and sanitation. By taking active steps to care for our environment, we honor God’s creation and demonstrate our love for our neighbors.

As we reflect on John 4:14 and the goal of Clean Water and Sanitation, let us commit ourselves to being good stewards of this vital resource. Let us recognize the spiritual and physical significance of water, work to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all, and take active steps to protect and conserve God’s creation.

May God bless us all!

Sincerely,
