Central Philippine University professors, Professor Rhys de la Banda Camacho and Professor Gleason Parcia, with Dr. Genaro V. Japos following a successful intensive scientific writing workshop aimed at boosting international publication.

Two Central Philippine University professors, Prof. Rhys de la Banda Camacho, and Prof. Gleason Parcia, joined a three-day intensive scientific writing workshop for international publication recently. Conducted at the Isola del Sole Villas and Resort, Siargao Island, from March 26-28, 2025, the workshop honed the skills and knowledge of participants in effectively presenting their research outcomes to the global scene.

Guided by Dr. Genaro V. Japos (Ph.D., DM, EdD, DHRM, DODT) of the ASEAN Research Organization, the workshop took a wide range of topics significant to writing top-notch scientific manuscripts. Day one was the participant’s arrival and provided an open day to relax and sightseeing. Day two started with registration and a detailed introduction to the principles of scientific writing, highlighting sound research questions and identification of appropriate international journals. The afternoon session covered carrying out sound literature reviews and ethical research considerations.

Day three built upon these foundations, guiding participants through the process of writing an effective manuscript. This involved acquiring skills for good abstracts, clearly and concisely presenting results, and writing compelling discussion and conclusion sections. The last session covered the nitty-gritty of the publication process, such as peer review, revision, publishing ethics, copyright, and useful tools in scientific writing. The workshop was capped by a wrap-up session, an open session for questions and answers, and the issuance of Certificates of Research Engagement to all participants.

Dr. Japos highlighted key issues that frequently cause the rejection of papers, failure to follow author guidelines, poor writing, journal mismatch, lack of originality, bad methodology, over- or under-interpretation of results, misleading conclusions, and breaches of research ethics. He emphasized concise and clear writing, proper journal selection, originality and relevance, proper methods of research, and adherence to high ethical standards in every stage of the research.

The workshop also gave real-life tips for researchers, advocating the use of tools such as ORCID, Google Scholar, and Mendeley. They were taught to create ORCID accounts, conduct relevant research topics in Google Scholar, and handle references efficiently with Mendeley.

This workshop presented a good chance for Professors Camacho and Parcia to improve their scientific writing, eventually leading to the development of research output from CPU and the Philippines at the global level. The peaceful environment of Siargao Island promoted cooperation among participants. The focus on ethical considerations and international collaboration highlights the increasing significance of responsible research practices in the global scientific community. The skills acquired will certainly improve their future research efforts and ensure that their findings reach a larger audience.
