On November 20, 2024, the Institute of Packaging Professionals – CPU Student Chapter hosted the “Seal Them Green: A Technical Seminar on Sustainable Sealing Solution for Bread Bags” at the Packaging Technology and Resource Center.

CPU President, Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, delivered the opening remarks, extending a warm welcome to all attendees. In his address, he emphasized the significance of the event and expressed his gratitude for the presence of Mr. Richard Hobson and Mr. Theodore W. Valderrama, Jr.

“Mr. Richard Hobson is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of We Seal Ltd, a UK-based company specializing in the manufacture of recyclable, tape-based bag closures and sealing machines. Under his leadership, We Seal Ltd. has become a market leader, supplying over 95% of UK bakeries since the 1970s. The company works with notable local and global partners, including Morrisons, Warburtons, Brennans, and Angelina’s Bakeshop, contributing significantly to the industry’s sustainable practices,” said Crystal Gyle Morano during the introduction of the resource speaker. “A graduate of Bradford Grammar School, Mr. Hobson brings over 30 years of expertise and innovation to We Seal Ltd, driving its mission to provide innovative and sustainable sealing solutions worldwide.”

During Mr. Richard Hobson’s lecture, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of We Seal Ltd., he demonstrated how sealing solutions can be presented that mitigate negative environmental consequences while maintaining the maximum product quality without compromising his sustainable packaging expertise. Joining him was Mr. Theodore W. Valderrama, Jr., Sales & Marketing Manager, Angelina’s Bakeshop, who spoke about the challenges and the prospects of implementing green solutions in bread packaging.

The seminar provided valuable insights into the importance of sustainable practices in packaging, particularly in the context of bread production. Participants were taught by esteemed guest speakers how eco-friendly materials for sealing could be used and how these materials are advantageous for the environment and the product customers.
