In an urban sprawl, the simple act of planting seeds has emerged as a powerful tool for fostering community engagement and outreach.
The aspiring third-year social work students conducted an outreach program entitled “FAITH Garden: Food Always in the Home” at Barangay Lanit, Jaro, Iloilo, last March 16, 2024, which underscores the importance of planting in everyone’s home. This program discovers the transformative impact of cultivating green spaces together. Through shared efforts in planting, communities not only beautify their surroundings but also forge deeper connections with one another and with the environment. At the heart of community planting initiatives lies a shared vision of creating vibrant, sustainable spaces that benefit all. These can promote food security.
Beyond its aesthetic and social benefits, community planting holds the potential to drive broader societal change. By reclaiming vacant lots for urban gardens, transforming neglected spaces into greener pastures, and utilizing available resources by using recyclable materials such as plastic bags, broken containers, tires, etc., we can foster a sense of pride and stewardship.
