Capturing the spirit of volunteerism: HUMSS learners, together with their teachers, pose after sharing knowledge, games, and gifts with Grade 6 students.
Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) learners from Central Philippine University (CPU) Senior High School conducted a three-day meaningful outreach program entitled “Pause Before You Post: Stay Smart, Stay Safe Online” from March 4–6, 2026. Each section was assigned a specific date to facilitate the activities, ensuring smooth implementation and active participation. The event was held at USWAG San Isidro Elementary School and aimed to promote responsible media use among young learners through a fun, interactive, and educational setting.
The program focused on teaching 128 Grade 6 learners the importance of Media and Information Literacy. It aimed to raise awareness about both the benefits of media and the potential risks associated with its misuse. Through this community engagement initiative, learners were guided to evaluate information critically and practice safe and responsible use of digital platforms.
This event was made possible through the collective efforts of the three HUMSS sections, their adviser Mrs. Liezl S. Martinez, and supervising teachers. Each student played an important role as a responsible member of their respective committees, contributing from the preparation stage to the actual implementation of the event.
During the program, HUMSS learners facilitated discussions on relevant topics such as misinformation and disinformation, artificial intelligence and deepfakes, and the responsible use of the internet. These discussions were presented in an engaging manner, enabling the young learners to easily understand the concepts. Interactive games were also prepared to maintain the students’ attention and encourage active participation.
The outreach initiative included discussions, interactive games, and a gift-giving activity involving the four Grade 6 sections of USWAG San Isidro Elementary School. These activities reinforced lessons about becoming responsible media users while creating an enjoyable and meaningful learning environment. The event also featured a song and dance performance led by selected students, promoting confidence and the expression of creative skills.
Gifts distributed included tote bags and hygiene kits containing essential items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, tissues, alcohol, combs, cotton buds, baby powder, and soap, supporting the children’s daily needs and recognizing their participation. Additionally, all three HUMSS sections prepared love gifts for the Grade 6 participants as gestures of gratitude and encouragement. The program became even more exciting as participants were served Jollibee Yum Burgers and spaghetti, adding to the joy and enthusiasm of the learners.
Fulfilling the final requirement for the Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship curriculum allowed the learners to apply classroom knowledge in real-life community settings while strengthening their sense of social responsibility.
Through initiatives like this, Humanistas continue to demonstrate the spirit of volunteerism. By sharing their knowledge and time, they contributed greatly to the event’s success. Their passion, dedication, and effort truly reflect CPU’s core values of Faith, Justice, Character, Stewardship, and Excellence, highlighting the enduring flame of the Centralian spirit.
