In collaboration with the APO Zeta Phi Chapter, APO Zeta Omicron of Central Philippine University (CPU) led a heartfelt donation turnover event on November 30, 2024, entitled “PAGHILIUGYON: Rising From the Ashes, Rebuilding Hopes through Empowerment and Compassion.” This initiative served as a beacon of hope for 75 families affected by the devastating fire that struck San Pedro, Molo, Iloilo City, on November 21, 2024, leaving many displaced and seeking temporary shelter at Molo 1 Elementary School.

The fire consumed homes, personal belongings, and savings, forcing families to start over with little more than the clothes on their backs. “Most of their belongings were swallowed by the fire, and their savings were lost,” shared Mr. Louie Vincent Digcabo-on, a member of the Alpha Phi Omega – Zeta Omicron Chapter. This tragedy left families facing not only financial difficulties but also the emotional toll of displacement.

APO Zeta Omicron and APO Zeta Phi quickly mobilized after the fire, organizing the donation drive with unwavering determination. They partnered with various CPU organizations and donors to gather food, clothing, and medicines. The event successfully distributed relief packs to the affected families, while remaining supplies were handed to the Barangay Council to ensure that all victims were reached.

“Volunteers played a crucial role in the success of the initiative. They helped distribute relief materials and provide emotional support to the victims by interacting and feeling with them,” Digcabo-on shared, highlighting the dedication of volunteers who played a vital role in the drive’s success.

The initiative’s success was made possible by the collaboration of several CPU organizations and local institutions, including:

  • Alpha Phi Omega-Zeta Phi
  • CPU Bangkaw Anahaw
  • CPU Reform Organization
  • Koalisyon ng Demokratikong Mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan
  • CPU Psychological Society
  • CPU Biological Society
  • Work Student Organization – CPU
  • Junior Chamber of Finance – CPU
  • Junior Philippine Association of Management Accountants
  • CPU-Junior Marketing Association
  • San Pedro, Molo Barangay Council
  • San Pedro, Molo SK Council

Volunteers not only distributed essential supplies but also provided emotional support, listening to the victims’ stories and offering words of encouragement.

Looking ahead, APO Zeta Omicron and APO Zeta Phi are committed to ongoing support. “We will conduct regular monitoring through the Barangay and SK Councils to ensure their concerns are effectively addressed,” Digcabo-on affirmed, underscoring the organizations’ dedication to sustained recovery efforts.

Witnessing the smiles on the children’s faces and hearing the victims’ heartfelt gratitude underscored the profound impact of PAGHILIUGYON. As the CPU community demonstrated, volunteerism and charity illuminate the path to hope, proving that humanity’s greatest strength lies in its willingness to stand together.
