Attendees of the Seminar on Regional Response to Emerging Aquatic Animal Diseases, spearheaded by the CPU Biological Society with Dr. Eduardo M. Leaño as resource speaker, gain valuable insights on aquatic health management and regional sustainability efforts.
Aside from academic excellence in various fields, Central Philippine University (CPU) has long been a nurturing ground for student leadership, service, and innovation. Through student-led organizations under the guidance of the Student Development and Programs (SDP) Office, headed by Director Alfred Morales, CPU continues to empower students to become well-rounded leaders in their disciplines and communities.
One group that embodies this vision is the CPU Biological Society (BioSoc) under the College of Arts and Sciences, recognized as this year’s Most Outstanding Student Organization during the Student Organizations and Fraternities Evaluation and Exhibit held on May 2, 2025, at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park.
More than a circle of biology majors, CPU BioSoc is dedicated to promoting life sciences, environmental protection, and sustainability. “What makes this organization unique is its holistic viewpoint,” shared Mark Hendrix G. Lapac, BioSoc President in an online interview. “We didn’t just focus on biology—we aimed to address various Sustainable Development Goals while serving and training our constituents.”
2nd Year BS Biology students take part in an educational field trip to Nueva Valencia, Guimaras on May 2–4, 2025, exploring biodiversity and ecological conservation in a real-world setting.
Throughout the academic year, CPU BioSoc implemented activities focused on learning, growth, and environmental awareness. Notable projects included Alampat, a research presentation platform; a seminar on Regional Response to Emerging Aquatic Animal Diseases; and a Biosafety Training. These initiatives equipped members with skills that connect academic knowledge with practical applications.
Lapac described the organization’s culture as one of unity and purpose. “We’re built on cooperation, understanding, and a vision for excellence. Together with my officers, we made the most of every opportunity to support both personal and collective development.”
Among many highlights, one simple moment stood out for Lapac. “Watching our fellow Biolohistas dance during the disco night of our last major event reminded me how far we’ve come—not just as an organization, but as a family.”
To incoming Centralians interested in joining, Lapac shares: “Always remember our motto: In BioSoc, we strive as one. Engage with others, participate fully, and trust the journey. Everything else will follow.”
With its foundation in science and service, the CPU Biological Society continues to thrive in promoting life, protecting the environment, and inspiring the next generation of student leaders.
