CPU’s BS Social Work students, along with their mentors, faculty, and staff, celebrate the successful pinning ceremony, a tradition that marks their transition from academic learning to real-world practice.

The Junior Social Workers Association of the Philippines (JSWAP) – Central Philippine University (CPU) Chapter celebrated its 4th Social Work Pinning Ceremony on September 19, 2024. The event marked a significant milestone for 57 Bachelor of Science in Social Work students who participated in a memorable ceremony symbolizing their formal induction into the field of social work. They were joined by their proud parents and agency supervisors.

The ceremony began with a solemn processional, followed by the Philippine National Anthem and the CPU Alma Mater song. In her opening remarks, Ma’am Divine Grace Sorioso, JSWAP-CPU Adviser and Field Instructor Coordinator, highlighted the historical significance of the ceremony, noting that it began in 2020-2021. The first two years were conducted virtually, while last year the ceremony shifted to a face-to-face format.

A musical intermission followed, featuring a rendition of the song “Hiraya” by fourth-year students Kirby John Moquete and Myra Lou Sucgang. Dr. Stella G. Fernandez, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, then delivered an empowering message to the students, reminding them of the hard work and preparation that led them to this point.

The resource speaker, Ms. Sarah Magalona Barayuga, RSW, emphasized the theme of the ceremony, “Lead, Inspire, and Make a Change.” She encouraged the students to strengthen their Christian faith, build character, and embrace the core values of social work. She also reminded them of the importance of mastering the “Orange Book” and practicing “ARA”—Action, Reflection, and Action.

As a symbol of their readiness to serve, the students were pinned by their respective field supervisors. The first batch of interns was introduced from agencies such as the Regional Center for Women in New Lucena, 4P’s in Arevalo, San Miguel, and Molo. Following a folk intermission, the second batch was pinned, which included interns from CSWDO Iloilo City, Lapaz-Lapuz, PSWDO at the Capitol, and CSWDO Mandurriao. The final batch of interns represented agencies like CSWDO Jaro I and II, Walk and Work Foundation, and MSWDO Pototan.

The ceremony culminated with a candle-lighting ceremony and batch song, where the students reflected on their journey together. JSWAP-CPU President, Ms. Althea B. Pontaoy, expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in making the event a success. The ceremony concluded with a closing prayer led by Destine Dayne Panadero, offering well-wishes for the students as they move forward into their internships and the field of social work.
