Unity in Celebration: Athletes, coaches, and staff pose for a group photo, commemorating another successful Golden Lions Day at CPU.
Last September 30, 2024, the University Gymnasium echoed with cheers and applause as Central Philippine University (CPU) hosted its annual Golden Lions Day, a longstanding tradition honoring the athletic prowess of its student-athletes. Organized by the CPU Sports and Athletics Office, under the leadership of Engr. Marc Hermel G. Agriam, the event showcased the talents and achievements of the Golden Lions across various sports.
The event commenced with a vibrant procession of all CPU Golden Lions teams—athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, dancesports, football, futsal, karatedo, tennis, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball—entering the gym accompanied by the spirited marching music of the CPU Symphonic Band led by Band Master Ascencion O. Bautista. The crowd roared as the athletes took center stage, demonstrating the camaraderie and unity that define the university’s sports culture. Each team was announced by the host, Pastor Jec Dan S. Borlado.
Dr. Esther Rose A. Romarate addresses the crowd, celebrating the return of Golden Lions Day and the support of CPU’s new president for the sports program.
Engr. Marc Hermel G. Agriam acknowledges the hard work of athletes who represented CPU at prestigious competitions, reinforcing the university’s commitment to sports.
Rev. Cris Amorsolo V. Sian, Senior Pastor of the University Church, led the opening prayer, offering gratitude to God for the many blessings bestowed upon CPU, including the privilege to gather and celebrate the Golden Lions’ achievements. He prayed for God’s guidance during the event and for the success of all endeavors of the athletes and coaches.
Dr. Esther Rose A. Romarate welcomed the attendees, expressing her delight at seeing both familiar and new faces. She highlighted that this event marked the second Golden Lions Day since the pandemic, following last year’s celebration where they honored the outgoing President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles. Dr. Romarate also introduced and welcomed the new President of Central Philippine University, acknowledging his unwavering support for the sports program, including his active participation in ILOPRISAA and Western Visayas PRISAA meetings, where CPU serves as a board member and treasurer. Dr. Romarate expressed immense pride in CPU’s largest delegation at the National PRISAA and congratulated the athletes for their outstanding efforts and successes. She also recognized participants in Palarong Pambansa, as well as coaches and assistant coaches for their dedication and passion in training the athletes.
Following Dr. Romarate message, Rev. Dr. Dagohoy extended his greetings on behalf of the CPU Administration and celebrated the athletes’ achievements. He expressed his unwavering support for the athletes and emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and representing the university with integrity. He also underscored the significance of integrity in competitions, reminding athletes of their roles as representatives of CPU and as followers of Jesus Christ. Drawing inspiration from 1 Corinthians 9:24-25, he encouraged them to “run to win” for an eternal reward rather than temporary prizes.
The event featured captivating special performances by the Golden Lions Karatedo and Dancesports teams, as well as the Taekwondo Poomsae Team. Following the performances, Engr. Marc Hermel G. Agriam took the opportunity to acknowledge the athletes who represented CPU at the Palarong Pambansa and the National PRISAA. He also concluded the event by announcing the release of cash incentives for athletes and coaches, expressing gratitude for their dedication. The university president’s approval of summer incentives for coaches and participants further highlighted CPU’s ongoing commitment to supporting its sports program.
Pastor Ranty S. Camponion led the closing prayer, seeking God’s continued blessing and guidance for the Golden Lions. As the Golden Lions Day came to a close, it served as a testament to the university’s unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of sportsmanship, excellence, and academic achievement.
