Assistant Professor Vince Ervin V. Palcullo, also a librarian at the Henry Luce III Library, has recently earned his Master of Arts in Information Studies from the Department of Library Science at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Recognizing its faculty and staff as key to its success and influence, Central Philippine University (CPU) prioritizes their professional development. The university’s Faculty and Staff Development Program is designed to offer advanced opportunities and resources, supporting the diverse community of educators and administrative professionals. By investing in its people, CPU ensures high educational standards and keeps its faculty and staff motivated and well-prepared to meet the evolving demands of the educational field.

Vince Ervin V. Palcullo, a librarian at the Henry Luce III Library and Assistant Professor at Central Philippine University, is among the distinguished recipients of the Faculty Development Program. He pursued his Master of Arts in Information Studies at the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. On October 2, 2024, he received his diploma during a ceremony held at the Chulalongkorn University Auditorium in Bangkok, Thailand. Aside from the support through the Faculty Development Program of CPU, he also received ASEAN/Non-ASEAN Scholarship given by the Chulalongkorn University.

When asked how the faculty development opportunity had enhanced his skills and knowledge in his field, he shared: “This opportunity allowed me to broaden my understanding of my field through international exposure, offering me a more expansive perspective and enabling me to acquire knowledge beyond the confines of the Philippine context.”

In an online interview, Prof. Palcullo shared that the most challenging aspect of the process for the said development program was the rigorous preparation, particularly in gathering the necessary documentary requirements. However, he also noted that these obstacles can be overcome through early preparation and effective communication with the relevant offices needed.

His goals for leveraging this development opportunity are clear: “I hope to that this development opportunity will by a driver to implement programs and projects related to information studies, library development, and archives and records management within the university.”

For him, the most effective way to share this knowledge is through teaching. Currently, he is instructing in the BLIS Program under the College of Computer Studies. He believes this platform provides an impactful opportunity, as the knowledge is imparted at the foundational level, where it has the potential to grow and develop into something productive in the future.

During his further studies in the Chulalongkorn University, he described the support he received from CPU as invaluable, particularly in terms of financial assistance. “Studying abroad is no small feat, and it is an especially costly endeavor. Thanks to the generous backing of the university, I was able to gain new insights and skills that I can now apply to the progress and development of Central Philippine University as a whole.”

Throughout two and a half years, he effectively managed his academic responsibilities alongside internships and volunteer work, all while adjusting to life in a foreign country and immersing himself in Thailand’s vibrant cultural environment.

When asked what advice he would give to other faculty members considering similar development opportunities, he remarked, “Opportunities like this are rare, but it’s essential to carefully reflect on the undertaking before committing. While having support is invaluable, you must also consider other factors such as personal commitments, family, and responsibilities. If these aspects align, then pursuing the faculty development program is a wise decision, as it can significantly aid in achieving your goals.”

Prof. Palcullo’s experience as a recipient of CPU’s Faculty Development Program has greatly enhanced his academic knowledge and reinforced his dedication to promoting collaboration and innovation within the Centralian community. His journey highlights the impact that development programs can have on educators, inspiring them to strive for excellence and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields.
