If you are passionate about pursuing a career in healthcare and scientific research, the College of Medical Laboratory Science (CMLS) at Central Philippine University (CPU) provides a dynamic academic environment where students are prepared to become leaders in the field of medical laboratory science. The College of Medical Laboratory Science began as the Department of Medical Technology under the College of Arts and Sciences in 1969 and remained part of it until 2012. In that year, the department was transferred to the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, where it remained until May 2017. In June 2017, the department was officially converted into the College of Medical Laboratory Science. The first Department Chairperson was the late Ms. Rose Nequin, who was then a practicing Medical Technologist in the United States. She was succeeded by the following Chairpersons: Ms. Shirly Subesa, Ms. Edith Camina, Mr. Noel Delicana, Dr. Jeremias Garcia, Prof. Erlinda Villano and presently, Dr. Ma. Corazon P. Porras who is designated as the Dean of the College of Medical Laboratory Science. Dr. Porras served the University since June 20, 1988, as Faculty Member, Officer – In Charge, Chairperson, Coordinator, and Acting Dean on June 1, 2017. She finished her Master’s Degree in 1999 and became the Department Head. She finished her Doctorate degree in 2008.

When asked about the college’s commitment to academic excellence and its recent success, Dr. Porras shared: “In March 2023, our college received recognition as the 10th Outstanding Medical Technology School in the Philippines by PASMETH-PRC, thanks to our remarkable 96.4% pass rate in the board examination,” she shared. In addition to that, the college has been consistently achieving a high passing rate in the National Licensure Exams of Medical Technologist and landed several times in the Top Ten national board passers’ list. As for the record, two Centralian graduates, namely Rael Dullano and Rene Huinda garnered 2nd places in March 1994 and March 1987, respectively.

The college currently offers a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science, a comprehensive four-year program that blends rigorous academic instruction with extensive hands-on experience. The program includes two summer classes in the first and second years, followed by a 12-month internship in an affiliated hospital laboratory during the fourth year. This internship provides students with invaluable real-world exposure, ensuring they are fully prepared for their professional careers. Upon completion of the internship, students must pass a comprehensive examination, which is a key requirement for graduation. The program is designed to produce graduates who are not only technically competent and analytical thinkers but also ethically grounded, research-oriented, and community-focused.

A lot of CPU alumni who are in the medical career, or are practicing doctors in the country had a good foundation in their Medical Laboratory Science background from Central Philippine University.”

“Embarking on a journey on Medical Laboratory Science is both challenging and rewarding. For

the student to succeed here are some key points of advice to help them,” Dr. Porras said. “First, dedication and hard work. The program demands significant time and effort. Expect to spend around 30 hours per week in classes and laboratory with an additional 30 hours for studying and assignments. Second, collaboration with peers. Building strong relationships with classmates provides essential support sharing knowledge and experiences can enhance learning and help manage stress. Third, maintain perseverance. Challenges are inevitable, but persistence is the key. Remember the importance of your role in healthcare and stay motivated. Fourth, effective time management. Balance your studies across all subjects focusing on areas that needs improvement, consistent effort throughout the term eases the presence during finals. Fifth, prioritize self-care. Balancing academics with personal well-being is crucial. Ensure you get adequate rest, maintain healthy lifestyle, seek support when needed to prevent burnout. Lastly, keep your goal in sight. Remember the vital role of medical professionals that plays in patient care. Let this purpose derive your commitment and passion for the field.”
