Central Philippine University (CPU) continues to uphold its strong reputation for academic research and international collaboration. In line with this commitment, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) proudly welcomes Ms. Carisa “Risa,” a foreign exchange student from Maderka University in Malang, Indonesia.

Risa, a law student, will be conducting a collaborative thesis in Iloilo focusing on Human Rights and Constitutional Law. Her research will be guided by the Social Sciences Department of CAS.

The collaboration began during a lecture in Indonesia where Risa met Dr. Irving L. Rio. As the host of the session, she engaged Dr. Rio in a discussion about the concept of “people power,” which sparked his interest. Their conversation deepened when Dr. Rio shared the situation of Indigenous Peoples in the Philippines and the human rights issues they face. Moved by this exchange, Risa accepted his invitation to pursue her research in Iloilo, with full support from CPU’s international offices.

Risa’s study draws parallels between the social challenges in Indonesia and the Philippines – particularly the issues of marginalization and deprivation of rights. She aims to explore conflict resolution strategies by examining the experiences of the Tumandok community on Panay Island.

Working closely with the Political Science and Public Administration faculty, Risa hopes her research will contribute to strengthening the understanding of human rights in both nations.

Through initiatives like this, CPU’s College of Arts and Sciences reaffirms its dedication to global academic exchange, intellectual growth, and the pursuit of excellence.
