Espina received the Service Medal with Citation at Youth Training Center, Philippine Red Cross – Iloilo Chapter.

Patricia Marie Espina, a fourth-year BS Psychology student from CPU College of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded the Service Medal with Citation, the highest honor given to Red Cross Youth volunteers at the chapter level. The award ceremony took place at the Youth Training Center of the Philippine Red Cross – Iloilo Chapter last May 26, 2024.

The Service Medal with Citation is a distinguished recognition that celebrates exceptional dedication, outstanding service, and significant contributions to the Red Cross mission. It honors volunteers who have shown unwavering commitment, leadership, and a profound impact on the community through their efforts.

Espina’s journey with the Red Cross began during her senior high school years when she took the initiative to establish the first Community Red Cross Youth group in the first district amidst the pandemic. Her eagerness to extend help during crises fueled her efforts, which have continued throughout her college years.

“Becoming a volunteer and reaching out to the community has been my way of coping with life’s challenges. The unique blend of challenges and adventures that come with being a volunteer has kept me committed to the Red Cross mission,” Espina said.

Balancing her academic responsibilities with volunteer work has not been easy, but she credits the support of her university’s faculty and staff, particularly the Social Sciences Department and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Stella G. Fernandez, as well as her fellow Red Cross volunteers, for helping her manage both commitments effectively.

Espina’s tenure with the Red Cross has been marked by memorable experiences, including stepping down from her role as Secretary of the Chapter Youth Council—a decision that, while difficult, ultimately led to her election as Chapter Youth Council President. This role allowed her to implement more initiatives and make a greater impact on the community.

“Volunteering has equipped me with valuable skills and a unique perspective on the diverse challenges people face, which are essential in the field of psychology,” Espina said.

Looking forward, Espina sees the Red Cross continuing to evolve to meet the challenges posed by modern society, emphasizing innovation, inclusivity, and the empowerment of youth.

“By harnessing the energy, creativity, and passion of young people, the Red Cross can amplify its impact and foster a culture of service and compassion,” she said.

Espina expressed her gratitude to several individuals who have supported her journey, including Ms. Shaira Lois Dela Cruz, the Chapter Service Representative of Red Cross Youth, Mr. Inri Dominic Flores, the National Youth Council Vice President Internal, her Vice President Internal, Erica Kristel Ramos, and Rounit Peñaflor, for their unwavering support and guidance.

As she continues her journey, Espina encourages other students to embrace the opportunity to volunteer.

“Remember, opportunities to make a difference are limitless; it’s up to you to seize them. Volunteering is not only about helping others but also about discovering your own strengths and passions,” Espina said.

Espina receipt of the Service Medal with Citation stands as a testament to her hard work, dedication, and the profound impact she has made through her volunteer efforts with the Philippine Red Cross.
