Held at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park, this year’s event carried the theme “Empowering MSMEs through Innovation and Sustainable Growth” and showcased over 38 exhibitors, all eager to promote and sell their unique products.

The event commenced with a registration followed by an opening prayer led by Rev. Dr. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, Director of the CPU Office of Communications followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Dr. Florence P. Bogacia, Vice President for Student Affairs, delivered the opening remarks reflecting on the previous year’s success. Dr. Bogacia noted the expanded participation of exhibitors, including those from various community outreach programs, highlighting the importance of this platform for marketing and sales.

In her address, Dr. Bogacia introduced exciting new features for this year’s event, such as MSME pitching sessions and business consultation activities aimed at nurturing the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). She emphasized the alignment of the event with CPU’s commitment to sustainable development goals, particularly in combatting poverty and hunger. Concluding her remarks, she inspired attendees with a quote from Colossians 3:23 and encouraged them to enjoy their shopping experience.

Following Dr. Bogacia’s opening, Dr. Esther Rose A. Romarate, Vice President for Student Affairs, introduced the keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, University President. In his keynote message, Rev. Dr. Dagohoy welcomed participants and expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the Iloilo City government and other partners. He underscored the vital role of MSMEs in the Philippine economy, noting that they account for over 99% of businesses in the country. He highlighted their significant contributions to job creation and economic development, particularly in rural areas. Rev. Dr. Dagohoy also celebrated Iloilo City’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, reiterating CPU’s commitment to supporting MSMEs through education and innovation, particularly in food packaging technology. He encouraged attendees to network and collaborate, fostering entrepreneurship while closing with a message of faith.

The rationale behind Merkado Lokal was articulated by Mr. Iñigo D. Garingalao, Iloilo City Agriculturist, who emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in agriculture and business. The opening of Merkado Lokal @ Central was officially declared by Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, University President, recognizing the exhibitors who contributed to the event.

As the event progressed, Mr. Mark Gil D. Peraman, CPUGAD TBI Manager, shared insights on the role of the CPUGAD Technology Business Incubator (TBI) as a partner for innovation and sustainability. Participants engaged in MSME pitching sessions, and Mr. Benjie R. Basco, a young farmer entrepreneur, shared his experiences with his ventures, Krispy Kangkong and Tarootick.

Prof. Sarex D. Dipol Jr. delivered the closing message, wrapping up an inspiring and fruitful event that underscored the importance of innovation and sustainable growth in empowering local MSMEs.
