On March 25, 2025, the CPUGAD Technology Business Incubator (TBI) Facility at Central Philippine University (CPU) served as the venue for the insightful Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas. Organized by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Western Visayas, the event featured a productive discussion with the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) on the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in nation-building.

DOST VI, represented by Assistant Regional Director for Technical Operations Keithlyn Sarah Bernardino, highlighted the agency’s Strategic Plan 2023-2028, which is anchored on five major outcomes: promoting well-being, wealth creation and protection, sustainability, and harmonization of DOST system governance. These strategic priorities aim to propel the region forward through science-driven initiatives.

One of the key discussions during the event was the impact of the DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) Undergraduate Scholarship Program. The program has supported over 2,000 deserving scholars across the region, producing topnotchers in various licensure examinations, including engineering and medical fields.

DOST VI also underscored its support for local entrepreneurs through initiatives such as the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) and the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST). These programs have enabled businesses to enhance product quality, ensure market competitiveness, and boost productivity among start-ups and emerging industries in Western Visayas.

The discussion further emphasized the agency’s efforts in disaster risk reduction and management. Programs such as Bantay Panahon and Project SIGNAL (Strategic Incident Georeferencing for Nationwide Alertness) have strengthened the region’s capacity for real-time monitoring and incident reporting, allowing local disaster risk reduction and management offices (DRRMOs) and law enforcement agencies to respond promptly to emergencies.

By hosting the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, the CPUGAD TBI Facility at CPU reinforced its role as a hub for innovation and collaboration, providing a conducive space for discourse on science, technology, and entrepreneurship. The event underscored CPU’s commitment to fostering initiatives that drive regional development through research, business incubation, and technological advancements.
