Despite the cloudy skies, Centralian cadets stood steadfast in their commitment as they participated in the CPU ROTC Ceremonial Parade and Presentation of Sponsors at the CPU Parade Grounds on March 20, 2025. The event, attended by esteemed guests, university officials, and ROTC officers, highlighted the dedication and discipline of the cadets and their sponsors.

The program commenced with an invocation by Pastor Louvel Edson L. Caspe, University Church Interim Pastor for Outreach, setting a solemn and dignified tone for the ceremony. CPU Commandant MAJ Shem L. Catipunan QMS (GSC) PA delivered the welcome remarks, acknowledging the presence of university administrators, faculty, alumni, and cadets. He underscored the significance of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) as a critical component of the National Service Training Program (NSTP), preparing students for national defense roles in times of emergency. He also emphasized the vital role of ROTC sponsors in supporting cadets’ development and fostering leadership and civic engagement.

“Today, we recognize and celebrate the invaluable support and contributions of university members, ROTC sponsors, and everyone who has played a vital role in the success of the ROTC program. Over time, the role of sponsors has evolved from a purely social function to a multifaceted and essential part of the program, helping cadets develop leadership skills and a sense of community. Their contributions are invaluable, making them an integral part of the ROTC experience. That is why we proudly present them today. ROTC sponsors play a crucial role in supporting cadets and fostering a professional environment within the program, extending beyond social roles to encompass various aspects of cadet training and development. Thank you for joining us in this celebration, and together, we will continue striving for excellence and upholding the spirit of the ROTC program,” Commandant MAJ Shem L. Catipunan QMS (GSC) PA said.

The highlight of the event was the introduction and presentation of sponsors from various colleges, each formally acknowledged by the cadets and guests. Following this, NSTP Coordinator Annalie D. Gilongos introduced the Guest of Honor and Speaker, BGEN Nhel Richard E. Patricio PA.

In his speech, BGEN Patricio reflected on his own ROTC journey at CPU, where he began as a Bravo Company cadet while pursuing a BS Electrical Engineering degree. He shared how the ROTC program played a pivotal role in shaping his path, eventually leading him to the Philippine Military Academy. Addressing the cadets, he highlighted the significance of ROTC training in developing responsible citizens and future leaders. He also expressed gratitude for the continuous support of the university administration, faculty, and stakeholders in maintaining the excellence of the ROTC program.

“Your presence today is a testament to the strong bond we share in upholding the spirit of service and excellence. Reflecting on my own ROTC journey, I recall standing on this same field as a Bravo Company cadet during my first year of BS Electrical Engineering in 1986-87. ROTC played a crucial role in shaping my path, as it was through this program that I obtained my PMA entrance exam application. Today, as we celebrate the presentation of ROTC sponsors, we recognize their role in embodying the values of leadership, integrity, and patriotism. Sponsors serve as a link between the ROTC unit and the wider community, fostering unity and purpose. To our cadets, this event reminds us that ROTC training is not merely about drills but about developing responsible citizens and future leaders. With the unwavering support of the university administration, led by Rev. Dr. Dagohoy, and all stakeholders, the ROTC program at CPU will continue to thrive and positively impact the community and the nation. Congratulations to our ROTC unit for this successful event, and to our sponsors, thank you for embracing this role with honor,” he said.

CPU President Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, alongside MAJ Shem L. Catipunan, presented a token of appreciation to BGEN Nhel Richard E. Patricio PA in recognition of his valuable insights and contributions. University officials and key stakeholders joined in honoring his presence.

The ceremony concluded with the cadets marching in unison, a testament to their discipline, unity, and dedication to service. The Central Philippine University ROTC remains committed to its mission of instilling leadership, discipline, and patriotism among its cadets. Under the leadership of Corps Commander CDT COL Christian John Armada, 1CL, a junior from the College of Computer Studies, the unit continues to grow in strength. This semester, a total of 377 cadets are enrolled, including two first-class, five second-class, and eight third-class cadet officers.

As one of the premier ROTC units in the country, CPU ROTC upholds the legacy of military training that dates back to 1918. With its roots in the National Defense Act of 1935 and the establishment of the first ROTC unit at Central Philippine College in 1936, the program remains a steadfast pillar in producing trained reservists ready to serve the nation.

The success of this year’s Ceremonial Parade and Presentation of Sponsors exemplifies the unwavering dedication of CPU ROTC in shaping the next generation of leaders and defenders of the country. With continued support from the university and the community, the ROTC program will persist in its mission of fostering excellence, patriotism, and service among the youth.
