Central Philippine University (CPU) reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) research as Prof. Dr. Ananias C. Sabijon Jr., Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, and an associate member of the Department of Science and Technology National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) participated in the Western Visayas AI Research and Development (R&D) Agenda Refinement Workshop on March 17, 2026, at the HRT Service Center, Iloilo Science and Technology University, La Paz, Iloilo City.

The workshop, organized by the Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Committee (RRDIC) through its Technical Working Group on AI and spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office VI, aimed to refine the region’s AI R&D agenda and align research initiatives with priority sectors. The refined agenda supports the AI Regional Development Action Plan 2025–2030, a roadmap designed to guide AI initiatives across Western Visayas.

The nine critical components covered in the AI Regional Development Action Plan include Governance and Ethics; Talent Development; Research and Development; Application of AI in Government and Industry; Partnerships and Linkages; Data Management; Infrastructure Development; Startup Development; and Awareness, Acceptance, and Use of AI.

During the workshop, Dr. Sabijon highlighted the importance of AI research in education, emphasizing current trends and related issues, and underscored the need to ensure that identified AI research initiatives are feasible and can be implemented within the specified timeframe.

CPU’s active role in this regional endeavor, through its representative, highlights its strategic position as one of the leaders and collaborators in AI development and research excellence, contributing to the region’s aspirations for technological advancement and inclusive growth.

Dr. Sabijon expresses his gratitude to DOST Western Visayas Regional Director Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga (CESO II) for the invitation, and to CPU President Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy for approving his participation in the refinement workshop.
