The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines–Policy Research and International Affairs (IPOPHL-PRIA) organized a Stakeholder Consultation on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge (GRATK) Treaty on November 17, 2025, at the Courtyard by Marriott–Iloilo. The event brought together key representatives from Panay and Guimaras to discuss the treaty’s impact on intellectual property, research, and cultural preservation.

The consultation gathered participants from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) across the region, Indigenous Peoples (IP) members and tribal leaders, as well as representatives from various Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSOs) in Region VI. The event served as a platform for meaningful dialogue on the protection of genetic resources and traditional knowledge—an area of growing importance in research, biodiversity conservation, and cultural safeguarding.

Central Philippine University (CPU) was represented by Ms. Ligaya Villarias-Caniel, CPU ITSO Focal Person, who actively took part in discussions on the treaty’s potential implications for academic research and innovation. Her participation underscored CPU’s continued commitment to promoting ethical research practices, supporting IP rights, and engaging in national initiatives that strengthen the protection of local communities and their cultural heritage.

The consultation ultimately aimed to gather insights, comments, and recommendations from regional stakeholders to guide the Philippines’ preparations for the implementation of the GRATK Treaty, ensuring that future policies uphold indigenous rights while supporting responsible scientific development.
