Eight undergrad-scholars from Central Philippine University, including four (4) BS Biology students namely Alessandra Marie Omemaga, Louisa Reyes, Jan Dawn Javellana, and Dea Punsalan were selected to attend the DOST-SEI Scholars Leadership Camp 2024 at Savoy Hotel, Malay, Aklan, from July 9-13. They were among the 150 scholars from across IV-B and VI regions who participated in the event, organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

The goal of the camp, which was a component of the Filipino Patriot Scholar’s Project, was to develop scholars’ leadership skills and foster patriotism. Over the five-day camp, scholars engaged in activities aimed at improving their abilities in areas including strategic decision-making, cooperative problem-solving, effective communication, teamwork, and active youth involvement.

For scholars, knowing oneself is crucial for effective leadership. Understanding their purpose provides direction towards growth. Personal growth may take time but it’s the quality of the growth that matters. A great leader must first be proficient in self-leadership before leading others. In addition to self-awareness, a student patriot embodies professional excellence, servant leadership and social responsibility as their core values. These are the principles that guide their decisions. Leaders should also foster a foundation of continuous learning and improvement, emphasizing that the leadership journey is ongoing. Open-mindedness, while establishing a supportive network and strong relationships allow leaders to seize opportunities and navigate challenges with creativity and resilience.
