The Central Philippine University–College of Business and Accountancy (CPU-CBA) successfully conducted a five-day Academic and Cultural Immersion Program in Bangkok, Thailand, in collaboration with Kasetsart University, from November 18 to 22, 2025. The delegation was composed of sixty-two (62) students enrolled in BUS 4106 – International Business and Trade and four (4) faculty members: Dr. Hermely A. Jalando-on, Dr. Carmen N. Hernandez, Assoc. Prof. Rae Marie G. Leong-on, and Mr. Stephen A. Yuson.
The immersion program was designed to provide students with meaningful opportunities for academic exchange, industry exposure, and cultural learning within an ASEAN context. It served as an alternative international immersion to complement CPU’s Academic and Cultural Immersion Program in China, scheduled from December 1 to 6, 2025, thereby accommodating students who were unable to join the China delegation.
The activity was coordinated through the Local and International Linkages and Affiliations Center (LILAC) under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Lesley Joy L. Dignadice, with endorsement from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Dr. Hermely A. Jalando-on served as the main organizer of the program, ensuring its alignment with course objectives and the University’s internationalization initiatives.
The immersion aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to ASEAN economic and trade practices, strengthen academic collaboration through lectures and exchanges with Kasetsart University faculty, and observe agribusiness and sustainable industry practices in Thailand. It also sought to enhance students’ cross-cultural competence through structured cultural immersion activities, equipping them with practical skills and global perspectives essential in international business environments.
On the first day, the CPU-CBA delegation arrived in Bangkok and visited prominent cultural landmarks, including Wat Benchamabophit, popularly known as the Marble Temple; the Gems Gallery, one of Thailand’s largest gemstone and jewelry centers; and Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn. The day concluded with a hotel transfer and a welcome dinner.
The second day focused on academic engagement at Kasetsart University, where students participated in lectures on ASEAN trade, cross-border e-commerce, and Thailand’s role in global trade. The delegation also visited the Kasetsart Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Product Improvement Institute, gaining insights into innovative technologies that bridge academic research and industry applications.
On the third day, students engaged in practical industry exposure and hands-on learning activities. They observed the production of wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid), a by-product of charcoal production, and participated in workshops involving handmade soap and pottery making. The day concluded with a cultural visit to the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya, where students immersed themselves in Thai artistry, architecture, and heritage.
The fourth day featured a Community and Sustainability Learning Experience at an elephant sanctuary, highlighting the principles of corporate social responsibility, ethical business practices, and sustainable tourism.
On the fifth and final day, the delegation visited the Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) museum, Thailand’s first Thai-owned bank, to learn about the country’s financial system and banking operations. The group then returned to Iloilo, marking the successful conclusion of the program.
Overall, the Thailand Academic and Cultural Immersion Program provided the CPU delegation with valuable hands-on exposure to international trade, industry operations, and cultural practices, significantly strengthening their global business knowledge, cultural awareness, and professional readiness. The experience further reinforced Central Philippine University’s commitment to producing globally competent graduates through meaningful international engagement.
