Hope and healing: CPU’s College of Medicine graduates ready to serve their communities.

On July 24, 2024, Central Philippine University (CPU) College of Medicine held its 18th Commencement Exercises for the graduating medical students of Class of 2024, Batch Aliis Vivere. The momentous event took place at Rose Memorial Auditorium and was marked by a series of inspiring speeches and memorable moments.

The day began with the College of Medicine Baccalaureate Service at 8:00 AM, where CPU President Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy delivered the opening remarks. Rev. Dr. Limuel R. Equiña, PhD, Executive Director of the Association for Theological Education in Southeast Asia, was the guest speaker. In his message, Dr. Equiña shared the life of Dr. Juan Flavier, emphasizing his selfless commitment and empathy for the sick and poor in rural areas. He encouraged the graduates to embody the virtues of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love, as they embark on their journey as medical professionals.

Dr. Equiña’s sermon was a poignant reminder of the responsibilities that come with the medical profession. “Learn to be thankful,” he said, “for there is power in gratefulness. Gratefulness can transform the ugly, the negativities into something better and something beautiful.”

The 18th Commencement Exercises took place in the afternoon. The ceremony began with an invocation, followed by the singing of the national anthem. CPU President Rev. Dr. Dagohoy set the tone with a heartfelt welcome address, citing Jeremiah 29:11-13 to remind the graduates of God’s plan for their future.

Dr. Elmer Q. Pedregosa, Secretary of the CPU Board of Trustees, acknowledged the presence of parents, guests, university officials, and faculty. He commended the graduates for their hard work, strength, and dedication, particularly through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was further highlighted by the virtual presence of Dr. Leilanie A. Nicodemus, MD, FPAFP, MSCM, as the Commencement Speaker. Despite being unable to attend in person due to severe weather conditions in Manila, Dr. Nicodemus delivered an inspiring speech. She emphasized the importance of perseverance, compassion, and continuous learning in the medical field. She urged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning, be leaders in their practice, and work towards equitable access to healthcare.

“Every patient you treat is a chance to demonstrate the power of compassion. Every challenge you face is an invitation to grow, to innovate, to become the best version of yourself as a physician. You’re not just doctors, you are dreamers, healers, architects of a healthier future. The world awaits your healing touch, your innovative minds, and your compassionate hearts,” she said.

Dr. Nicodemus closed her speech with a quote by William Osler: “A good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” She encouraged the graduates to dream big for their families, patients, communities, and the future of healthcare.

The presentation of awards followed, with each graduate receiving medals and certificates. Dean Dr. Henry D. Gonzales presented the 70 candidates for graduation, and Dr. Arlene Pondias, Dr. Peter Bryan de la Cruz, and Dr. Ma. Annabelle Enano assisted in the conferral of degrees and investiture of hoods.

The College of Medicine Class Valedictorian Marrianne Lyka C. Badenas delivered an emotional speech, attributing her success to the grace of God. She recounted the challenges faced during their medical education, particularly the transition from online classes to hospital exposure, and encouraged her peers to honor God through their service to others.

Joshua F. Borja the class salutatorian then led the graduating class in the physician’s prayer, followed by a prayer for the graduates by Pastor Neva Grace L. Fabila, Associate Pastor for Campus Ministry, University Church.

Dr. Florentino P. Alerta II, MD, Trustee of the CPU Alumni Association, Inc., delivered the Alumni Pledge to the graduates. The ceremony concluded with a benediction by Pastor Fabila, the exit of colors, and a recessional, marking the end of a momentous day for CPU College of Medicine’s Class of 2024.
