CPU BioSoc and FCKFI bring smiles to cancer-stricken children at Camp Kalipay.
Tigbauan, Iloilo – July 24-26, 2024 – The CPU Biological Society partnered with the Friends of Cancer Kids Iloilo Foundation, Inc. (FCKFI) to bring smiles and joy to cancer-stricken children and indigent families through the heartwarming Camp Kalipay event held at Sol Y Mar. This three-day event was a beacon of hope and support for those facing the challenges of cancer, emphasizing the importance of community, compassion, and care.
FCKFI is a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to assisting children from indigent families who are battling cancer. Their primary focus is to support these children through their chemotherapy treatments, alleviating some of the burdens faced by their families. In line with this mission, the CPU Biological Society actively participated in a volunteer orientation on June 30, 2024, to learn how to provide care for these children and their families. This preparation was essential for their roles in the Camp Kalipay Program.
During Camp Kalipay, the CPU Biological Society played a crucial role as facilitators and activity providers. They organized a variety of engaging activities designed to bring joy and a sense of normalcy to the children. These activities included a storytelling session and a fun laminating activity tailored for children aged 7 to 12. The society’s officers also engaged the families with additional activities, creating a memorable and uplifting experience for all attendees.
Mark Hendrix G. Lapac, President of the CPU Biological Society and a 3rd Year BS Biology student specializing in Pre-medicine, shared insights about their involvement in the camp. When asked about the inspiration behind partnering with FCKFI, Lapac emphasized their desire to extend support and bring happiness to children battling cancer, aligning with their mission to promote well-being and environmental care.
Lapac highlighted the specific roles and responsibilities of CPU BioSoc members during the camp, which included organizing arts and crafts, games, and educational sessions about life acceptance. The members also provided emotional support and companionship to ensure the children felt valued and cared for.
Despite the challenges encountered during the planning and execution of Camp Kalipay, such as coordinating schedules and resources and addressing the diverse needs of the children, the CPU BioSoc managed to overcome these obstacles through regular planning meetings and open communication with all partners. The support from FCKFI and other volunteers was instrumental in ensuring the camp’s success.
The overall atmosphere of Camp Kalipay was joyful and uplifting. Children and their families responded positively to the activities, expressing gratitude and enthusiasm. The camp offered a much-needed respite from their daily struggles, allowing them to enjoy moments of happiness and connection. Lapac recounted touching instances, such as a shy child who gradually opened and actively participated in the activities and a parent who expressed how the camp had renewed their child’s sense of hope and joy.
“One memorable instance was when a child, initially shy and reserved, gradually opened up and actively participated in the activities. By the end of the camp, they were joyful and shared their experiences with others. Another touching moment was when a parent expressed how the camp had given their child a renewed sense of hope and joy. These instances highlighted the impact of the camp on both the children and their families,” Lapac said.
Feedback from participants and their families was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the care and effort put into organizing the camp. The positive atmosphere and meaningful connections formed during the activities left lasting memories for the children and their families.
Camp Kalipay aligns perfectly with the CPU Biological Society’s mission to promote humanitarian well-being and environmental care. This initiative provided an opportunity to educate participants and foster a compassionate and conscious community.
Looking ahead, the CPU BioSoc plans to continue collaborating with FCKFI and explore partnerships with other organizations. They aim to expand their outreach programs and develop new initiatives addressing various community needs, seeking feedback from past participants to improve future events and create lasting, positive impacts through sustained community engagement.

Engaging in community service allows individuals to make a positive impact, develop a deeper understanding of societal issues, and build a sense of empathy and compassion—essential qualities for any future leader. He reminds everyone that even small actions can create significant change, urging students to contribute their time and effort.
