Central Philippine University (CPU) proudly celebrates alumna Michelle Catacutan-Lorenzo for her outstanding achievements in the field of education abroad. On November 23, 2025, she was honored as one of “The Outstanding Pilipinos in New Zealand” by the Auckland Pilipino Trust during a ceremony held at Sorrento in the Park, Auckland, New Zealand.

Michelle, a 2008 graduate of the Bachelor of Elementary Education program with a concentration in Preschool from CPU College of Education, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition.

“At first, I was truly surprised as I had never expected my efforts to be recognized. When I realized the honour was genuine, I felt deeply grateful to God and deeply moved to be chosen as a recipient of The Outstanding Pilipino Award,” she shared.

The award highlights Michelle’s dedication to supporting Filipino educators overseas. Drawing from her own experience navigating the teacher registration process in New Zealand, she founded the Filipino Teachers in NZ support group in 2019. The Facebook-based community has since grown to over 13,200 members and provides guidance on teacher registration, understanding the New Zealand curriculum, employment advice, and assistance in transitioning into teaching roles. The group also fosters camaraderie among members through regular gatherings and an annual Christmas party, strengthening a vibrant Filipino educator community in New Zealand.

Michelle’s journey from CPU to becoming a teacher in New Zealand was one marked by determination and faith. After beginning her career at Assumption Iloilo, she paused to focus on her family. Later, an opportunity to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Business in New Zealand allowed her family to move with her. Part-time work at her son’s daycare introduced her to the New Zealand teaching sector, inspiring her to obtain teacher registration and continue her career in the Early Childhood Sector.

“My personal journey inspired the creation of the Filipino Teachers in NZ group,” Michelle explained. “I wanted other Filipino teachers to have support and guidance that I lacked when I first navigated this process.”

For Michelle, the award is both personally and professionally significant. “It is deeply humbling and affirming. It means that the sacrifices, quiet work, and love poured into serving others and representing the Filipino community have been seen and valued,” she said. Professionally, it validates her leadership and dedication to Filipino teachers seeking opportunities abroad.

Michelle Catacutan-Lorenzo engages with aspiring educators during a March 2025 talk to CPU student teachers, sharing her journey and advocacy in international teaching.

Her motivation remains rooted in a desire to uplift fellow Filipino educators. She hopes that teachers working overseas continue to put God first, remain passionate about teaching, inspire the next generation, and uphold Filipino values and culture.

To current CPU students, especially those aspiring to teach internationally, Michelle leaves an inspiring message: “Start by entrusting your plans and dreams to the Lord. Set clear goals, seek knowledge, and develop your skills. Surround yourself with people who inspire and motivate you. Remember, teachers have the power to transform lives—if you can make a difference for others, you can create success for yourself too.”

Michelle Catacutan-Lorenzo’s recognition is a testament to the excellence and global impact of CPU alumni. Through her advocacy and leadership, she continues to empower Filipino educators abroad while showcasing the values instilled by her alma mater.
